Most of us have spent recent weeks complaining about the electric here on the island.
Last night we had a long power cut in Bangrak/Plai Laem at the height of the rain. That in itself is not unusual.
Let us though thank the Thai PEA workers who went out in that weather and fixed the problem.
I am sure they would have preferred to celebrate the New Year differently and whatever we may think of the management, the guys on the ground got the job done in time for the New Year Countdown.

PepsiCo unveils Bt18.4bn plan for Thai investment
The company has appointed a global logistics firm - DHL - as its logistics and warehousing partner for Thailand. It also works with local distribution partners, which will handle production distribution and logistics in the five regions throughout the Kingdom and via the company's 50 distribution points.

Well that's Samui off the list then. DHL do not know where Samui is. Anything sent via DHL to Samui ends up in the post from Bangkok. Last tracking schedule we had - Hong Kong - Cincinatti - Hong Kong - Bangkok - Phuket - Bangkok - Hong Kong - Bangkok - Phuket - Bangkok then EMS to Samui. Many such stories like this. Hopeless company.

Foreign tourists cut short their trips, leaving Samui and Pa-ngan islands during the three-day blackout, which officials estimated caused more than Bt10 billion in damage to Samui's tourism.
Former Samui mayor Ramnet Jaikwang earlier urged a government subsidy to tap the tourism potential of this world-famous destination that brings in Bt10 billion in revenue each year.
So three days without electricity lost one years revenue. How does that work?

Reports on Thai TV CH 3 this morning state that a Frenchman (?) has died after a fall whilst climbing the waterfall at Namuang.

Cool, wouldn't mind to see the Queen Mary 2
Yes she is a beautiful ship. But also try and see the P&O and Princess ships - beautiful lines as well unlike so many of the monstrosities calling themselves Cruise Ships these days.
-
Certainly their captains will be more competent than that one of the Costa Concordia
Costa Classica and Costa Victoria both called at Samui in 2012 but no Costs ships scheduled for Samui so far in 2013.
Both happily arrived and left without incident!

I was told this evening that the Bangkok Police were on the island and using traffic stops to breathalise drivers. Have not seen it myself - has any one confirmation or otherwise of this?

1) Still no power on Plai Laem Soi 4 but everywhere else it would seem! Never had our 2 hour "on period" . 20 minutes on Wednesday evening and 5 minutes last night despite the street lights being on - but nothing to the houses and of course PEA not answering the phone!
2) Went to book a ticket at Bangkok Air Office yesterday afternoon. No problem. We were the only people in the office and had a choice of flights today. Did not seem to be a panic, as reported, to leave the island.
In Japan these managers would be falling on their swords - here they will be congratulating themselves on solving a problem that should never have happened. Not a word of apology from PEA. Nothing from Central Government - problem solved, we can ignore it now!

Plai Laem through Bangrak - 20 minutes last night then nothing until 0800 this morning. See how long that lasts. Whatever the technical problems the PR from the PEA and Municipality is a disgrace. Even the post copied from MCOT was wrong. Diesel in short supply and the election vehicles still churning round the island wasting it. When we had the power outage 5 years ago they were much better organised and you knew the time of the cuts and they applied them to the minute. Not today. Headless chickens running around looking for someone else to blame.

I believe elections are usually held on Sundays which would make the date the 23rd. It is also normal to close the bars on the day before and the day of the election so Christmas should be OK!

Hey motocrosser - no more posts from you please.
Tonight I received a call from a renter "The gate won't open"
I am going to have to call Mr Toi tomorrow. SamuiRes please PM me the email details - I could have emailed him tonight.
Hey ho - another fun-filled day ahead.

Correct - the Nathon shop is closed and they are now in that stretch of shops opposite Town Centre but nearer to Big C. The are pretty good and also do Samsung mobile phones.

Walked down Soi 2 in Plai Laem last night to the Wat for Loy Kratong and there was plenty of noise from all manner of frogs and other invisible creatures!

With the recent rain, I have been experiencing lots of 'drop outs' with the TOT DSL service.
Recently tried to make a telephone call with the ancient 'Alexander Graham Bell' system and nothing. Zip. Danada.
Then tested seven of my neighbours and only one of them had a working, old fashioned voice/fax system. (DSL on all of them up and working OK at the time)
Anyone else struggling with TOT? (Not fibre optic- just cable and digital exchange.)
I am just trying to find out if this is an island-wide problem - or just at the 'pointy bit of Plai Laem'.
We are at the Fisherman's Village end of Bangrak and find TOT slow and often down, especially first thing in the morning. 3BB do not have a line here unfortunately as I have 3BB at home in Plai Laem and that is generally (touch wood) not a problem. Has anyone tried True or CAT in Bangrak?

You just have to hope that when they do publish them that they remember to convert to local time. A few years ago the first set they published were all GMT!

See this report on CNN Travel News - from where you can link to the original article in the local paper we cannot mention!

Need some for cleaning paint splashes. Have tried Home Pro, various building suppliers and pharmacies - they have no idea what I am looking for. Has anyone seen this anywhere or know the Thai equivalent please?

Drove along the Ring Road south of Nathon today where they are doing all the road and drainage work. It would seem that they might just have decided to implement a sensible solution. The drains are being built alongside the road, not under it, and they are providing inlets in the kerbs so there will be no drain covers in the road. You see this in many countries and it usually works quite well. My only concern would be that the drains being provided will be large enough in some of the deluges that we get. However seems a move in the right direction.

Phangan no clouds but 10 year old...
Apple map more updated but simply comic on Phangan. Low res, b&w and different style. Apple....ooops!
Go here and report that the images are ten years old.
I constantly did this for Koh Samui and perhaps they took note - like to think so anyway!!

The only cloud in the NE in the latest image seems to be between Big C and Makro but if you use the Time Slider function and go back one click, that disappears. Or are you outside the area of the latest update?I'm still under the clouds
-
They have at last updated the NE of the island without cloud cover!

The only solution was to download the AVG Removal Tool and once AVG was gone, my programs came back - at least those I have checked so far. I have now installed AVIRA and will not go near AVG ever again.
I tried to remove AVG from my notebook and could not completely uninstall it. Can you direct me to the AVG removal tool.

Is Dhl Still Subcontracting Their Bangkok To Samui Deliveries?

There is a new DHL Office at the top of the hill near Makro - same side - I just noticed yesterday. However, within the last month we were still getting packages from DHL using EMS from Bangkok and taking 2-3 weeks to get as far as that.
