  1. With plastic you can do a complete run with no seams.  No chance of a seam splitting or rusting out.  Other than that it is a faster and easier install and somewhat cheaper.

Just make sure that the ends of the roll get sealed (plastic bag taped on) so no water gets in the pipe.

I have used plastic conduit and directional drilling on a commercial basis.  They saved me a world of pain.

  2. I try to go to the beach three to four times a week when I'm in country.

I normally go to kamala (live there) or to Layan Beach (North end in the provincial park)

I note that there are often groups (families?) of thais that use this end of the beach especially on buddhist holidays.

I confess I go to layan partially for the beach and partially to enjoy one of Sylvia's great lunches at her restaurant ' in the park.

The high baht is a massive issue for Thais as cost in 7/11 have gone up by 5%+ and rest assured because it's an American company they will not reduce.

Fact is that it's government backed with the Chinese Government being the main culprits! Pushing the extreamely high baht! This has affected ALL business operating from Thailand (Rice, fish, Chicken famers, hotels and tourest, etc etc)

    Just a little FYI

the first 7/11 and the one that manages all 7/11s' is in the city of Dallas, Texas.  The company that owns it, Seven Eleven Japan Co. Ltd. is in Tokyo.  Seven Eleven Japan Co. Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Seven & I Holdings formed by Ito - Yokado in 2005.

    It's as American as ... wasabi ????

  4. First off, congratulations on getting the cancer successfully removed.  Hopefully it stays that way.  I've had friends with cancer.  Some treatments worked.  All forms of the disease are horrid.

I don't know, sometimes i get the feelings that the guys in the TAT just letting go announcements regarding tourism in Thailand according to how they feel and to try to spruke the industry with all sorts of figures and numbers pulled pretty much out of their collective derrieres...

Hmm.  You seem to think they are using a much more scientific approach than I do.

Then why did they rent out their "national treasure" to Thailand?

It is part of the "Panda diplomacy" practised by China since the late 50's.  The most notable success of this policy was the gifting of two Pandas to the United States in 1972.  This was in response to Richard Nixon's state visit to China.

Americans went wild over the pandas  with thousands waiting in line to see them.  The Americans gifted China with two muskox in response.  The pandas were credited with greatly lowering the tensions between the countries and they greatly assisted in the normalizing of relations.

Now our wars are mostly economic and fought on the factory floors, not on the battlefields or with nuclear tipped missiles.  I prefer the option of economic diplomacy rather than actively trying to kick them in the nuts.

African swine fever was first detected in Asia last August in China, wiping out nearly 40% of pigs in the world’s largest pork producer. It has since spread across Asia, affecting Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines.

South Korea was the latest country affected by the virus, confirming two cases this week.

The scary/interesting figure here is that between the disease and culling, 40% of the pigs in China have been wiped out.  They say that it is not transferable to humans.  I hope they are right.  The strain going through Asia is nasty and a quick killer.

Think I'll fill up on rib barbeques before I return to the LOS

  9. I note the Panda's death seems to be considered somewhat premature by the Chinese.  The news and comments are trending on some Chinese social network platforms.  Chang Mai and Thailand in general do not come off well.  Chinese social commentary is running strongly against them.

I do hope the autopsy shows a definite cause of death.  An indeterminate cause that does not exonerate the zoo may create more problems for Thai Tourism.  The chinese consider the panda to be a "national treasure"  Chaung Chaung's death may cause as much of a reaction at home as the Phoenix disaster.

I'm not saying there is any equivalence.  I don;t believe there is.  It is just that this seems to be getting pumped up on social media.

I'm not sure if you're being  a bit tongue in cheek or if you're referring to the plastic bottle light.  Its' use is spreading through South America and Africa\

This seems to be a good  use of some of our plastic waste.

I am sure I read somewhere, that some Govt. official , said there was going to be plenty of water for Phuket ,and now this,  How does the chemical, or mineral or whatever they are using affect the water.

Dry ice or silver iodide have traditionally been used.  Both enhance the formation of larger droplets/crystals during the condensation cycle.

The seeding process cannot be proved to cause a specific storm, but the evidence shows that continued seeding will increase the amount of condensed moisture pulled from a weather system over a period of time.   Colorado seems to be increasing its' winter snowpack by 5% to 15% as tested in the seeded areas vs. non seeded

Nothing is cheap in amazing Thailand any more.  a $3.00 botlle of vine at home here $15.00.  what a deal.

Pork 5 bucks a kilo. Home 2.50.  Vegetables loaded with paraquat, have at it.

Hmmm.  Three dollar wine.  $2.50/k pork.  If you're really drinking $3.00 wine I seriously doubt that you'd even notice the paraquat.

Where the hell is this home you are fleeing from.  If it has a good beach or three I'll go there.

  13. Hi again,

Glad to hear that the film is helpful.  As far as the reflective paint is concerned, I'm not familiar with what is available.  I have tried a white high gloss paint once for its' reflective qualities.  I can't say how effective it was as we did several different things at the same time.  We resolved the tenant issue, but how much each item contributed is difficult to assess.   I tend to agree with Seajaes response concerning paint and brick heat loading.

I'm  not that familiar with LOS building practises.  The Thai climate requires different building practices than I'm used to dealing with so I don't want to steer you wrong. I do know that a heated wall is a large heat sink unless you install a thermal break during construction.

Is this room on the ground floor or ......?  I ask because I can't help wonder if you could set up tarps or awnings or something aesthetically pleasing outside that would block the sun for a few hours.  Check the local open air bars (always a pleasant task) or stores to see if they have any interesting way of keeping the sun off their customers.  Adapt it to your needs.

  14. Hi

First off, it's a small room (less than 110 sq ft).  I suggest you try some of the less expensive options before trying an A/C unit.

Try putting some thermal reflective film on the window.  It means that the window should be closed when the sun is on it for the film to be most effective.

Light colored reflective curtains behind this filmed window also would help.

Lastly, anything you can do to increase the airflow to the room from the cooler parts of the house should make a major difference.  Just make sure that you have provided an escape for the the hot room air.  Air flow and good circulation are often all you need.

Any or all of them should help

    Regards

  15. I expect that the funds will go towards upgrading safety procedures to international standards.  Thailand lost its' International safety accreditation this spring.  They had to jump through some very expensive hoops to quickly provide and show they could maintain the safety standards required.

I believe (but could be mistaken) that many national airlines will or can not fly into non accredited airports.  Someone took a lackadaisical attitude towards their duties and almost caused the airplanes to stop coming.  I am sure that that discussion with their boss was....interesting.

  16. I am a Canadian and a non-resident. I am retired and have lived in Thailand for several years. You can legally have one Canadian bank account in Canada as a non-resident. You can confirm this with a tax accountant in Canada. You can then keep your money in Canada and transfer it to Thailand as you need it. You can't transfer it through online banking if you are here in Thailand so in order to do the transfer set up a joint bank account with someone you trust in Canada, transfer money to their account through online banking and then they can go to the bank and do the transfer to your account in Thailand. I deal with the RBC and Krungsri bank. I have done this several times. Transfer is typically in my Thai account the next day.

A much better answer than mine.

  17. Take your cash to Oanda, or some other exchange house or a bank and get it changed to HKD, THB, Dong or whatever you need. I don't think you need to be a client to buy money from a bank. A main branch of any bank should have baht but I find I get a better rate from the exchange houses. Phone around and find out who gives you the best rate.

  18. I'm in the impression that the battery technology research is getting much more money, than it used to get. It's the one big problem, which has to be solved. Most likely there will be several different solutions in the future.

Then again, good ways to store hydrogen would be equally good way to provide energy storage.

Elon Musk and Tesla (partnered with Panasonic) are producing batteries to complete a home solar system.
