Public Indecency at Wat Phra Kaew Spurs National Outrage and Debate
Presnock replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
biggest problem is that these people are tourists from a country totally different in culture and every other aspect in Thai and wherever they are from. I can recall the first time I rode in a taxi in Japan and the driver stopped and took a leak right there on the side of a busy street. I have been at "quality" restaurants here in Thailand and have seen Chinese boys too just urinating near the outdoors tables occupied by other foreigners too - happened to be farangs and they were outraged to say the least but the Chinese took no notice of them and their comments nor was anything ever said to the children. A bathroom was less that 5 meters away and widely marked for all to see. As for this happening at a revered temple, enough properly marked signs should be provided at entrances to avoid such behavior as it seems to upset the locals so much. my opinion anyway - I have seen way too much flagrant violation of local customs around the world for this to have any effect on me - just the forum comments. -
BOI LTR important to maintain qualifications

in addition to this....every visa in Thailand requires the holder to maintain the qualifications for that particular visa for the period of that visa in order for the visa to be kept by the holder. From what I as an LTR holder have seen, during the yearly notification of address there is nothing that indicates and check of the original qualifications, and as mentioned nothing has been seen by me yet of any qualifications check for the 5 year renewal. I assume it will be the same figures but who knows?, not me! -
BOI LTR important to maintain qualifications
Presnock replied to Presnock's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Thai immigration law says that qualifications for any visa must be maintained during the period of the visa in order for the visa to be retained. The LTR is no different. As far as I know, there are not going to be any yearly checks when one advises the BOI or immigration of their current address. As for the 5th year renewal/extension of the LTR I have yet to see any documentation on what will be the requirements provided by the LTR holder. For this retiree, I find the LTR to be the best for the money/ease of qualifying, and best benefits for me. -
Is Vietnam going to be next retirement

Yeah it was pretty ugly. If I remmeber correctly after so long ago, all the fire engines were destroyed too because fighters loaded with bomb were hit, set afire, the arming pins burned out, when a bomb would explode, it would send other "armedbombs" into the air and when coming down, would explode destroying fire engines and those fighting the fire too. They had to fly in fire engines from Clark AB in the PI. I do believe to our aircraft was the first one to be able to take off that morning after the attack. Not a pretty picture but then there weren't a whole lot of those anyway. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything, entering the military right out of HS at 17, trained as a Vietnamese linguist and worked with South Vietnamese soldiers. WE and they were told repeatedly that those soldiers, because they worked so closely with the Americans, that they and their families would be evacuated in case of an NVA invasion. However, only the General in command and ops officer were evacuated. SOme of those that did make it out called to let some of us know that they did make it out with their families but even though offered, they refused to ever work for the US govt. Funny how many of those memories are still so fresh in my mind after so many years. -
Thailand-China Submarine Deal Discussions to Resume
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I once saw a suggestion for the use of these submarines - as the seas flood into BKK, did tunnels under the city and use the subs as "bus" transport to different parts of the city. can't think of any other use for the Thai Navy ships especially ones that go under water. Just my opinion as Thailand will never be in any conflict where the military would have to use these to fight. Maybe they need some more tourist tour attractions - even in the US they use some submarines for tourists - but usually free so that won;t happen here. -

my personal feelings for this worldwide phenomonom in the western countries, the Muslim and others fleeing the socalled <deleted>hole countries have noticed that they don't have to assilate into the western society, culture and traditions yet get enough immigrants in one location, there are enough votes to get one of their own elected into a political office. As they continue to grow, the higher positions become open to their own and they can concentrate on changing the local society into that which they left. Now why would they want to do that other than to destroy the west? I sure don't understand it, immigrants today are a different breed from those of the yesteryears in my opinion. oh well who am I to judge while I am living in a foreign country instead of my native country but I am not trying to change anything here. -
send the request to the BOI address is provided in this forum as well as tel. numbers. Yes as a benefit, one's money remitted from outside Thailand (if not earned in Thailand) are tax free. If the LTR holder wishes to work in Thailand the BOI will help get a work permit - that money earned in Thailand will be taxed even for the LTR holder. I doubt that the Thai Board of Investment reads comments on this forum.

required to report your current residence in Thailand yearly. If you leave Thailand during the year, then your 1-year report begins again similar to 90-day report only for a year. BOI also if queried prints out a list to be done on the yearly report. Someone copied that and it is here somewhere. Visa is exactly like other visas - to keep the visa valid for the length stamped in the PP, one must maintain the qualifications, according to the BOI.

Is Vietnam going to be next retirement

I am pretty sure that I was there then. But, even before that, Danang AB was called Rocket City. Went through quite a few of those during my stint there. We flew out of Danang daily and after too many rockt attacks and loss of acft, they moved our acft to CamRanh Bay for protection but we still had to stay in Rocket City - our acft would pick us up at the end of the runway and drop us off later at the end of the runway again. They were just worried about losing any of those acft, not the rear-end crew members. Our crews lived in tent city. Not too long after that summer we moved to Okinawa and flew on jets versus the 130's. Longer flights but that was the beginning of a lot more trained folks and though they flew a lot less, they certainly complained more. It was sorta like being in the war but then again it wasn't, as much danger was removed. We still got chased chased off orbi by VN, Chinese and Russians. A real growing-up experience but prepared me well for a successful career and now that allows me to live well in Thailand and hope that continues for quite some time. I take it, that you too were there on that BIG and successful attack by the NVA. -
BOI LTR important to maintain qualifications

Previosly on 3 May, forum member Srikcir included a note from the BOI office re the yearly report which indicates that one must fill in and sign the tm.95, copy of passport, TM 6 if available and the notification from the BOI fof the yearly report (if available). just saying, I guess if one gets the notification then it will advise what needs to be done as an agent/rep can do the visit. the same date restrictions reportedly apply 15/7 days. Just saying, most of us are newbies with this LTR so see different stories/questions regularly. I feel this visa was designed for me - long term resident! within my means. Be happy be safe -
US Man Detained in Phuket for Theft, Alleged Assault on Thai Woman

oops, sorry if I offended you because I hate it when I do make that mistake. Be happy, be careful, be safe. -
Well if I am not mistaken, the time limit to bring him to justice has already expired for some of the charges. Killing a policeman, one would think that would never go away without a trial... money rules! Look at all those pollution breathing locals ... can't make it a danger zone and provide some funds to help solve the problems, but can't scare away any tourists' dollars.

What I find amazing is that he had to pay bail to get released. Had he been in NYC, they amended their laws about thefts because they were getting too many people stealing from the stores - now, if the amount of stolen material is less than a thousand dollars then that is no crime. Now stores are having to close totally because of the gangs coming in stealing the merchandise and when the police nab the offenders, they just have to let them go as "no crime committed".

well it seems to me that since I have been a teenager anyway, there have been demonstrations of some kind for the last 60 years. Very few of them would make me want to put up with them in my daily life. Whether that is a good or bad thing? I sure don't know nor do I care. I was successful, had a very enjoyable career, lived in and seen a lot of different peoples and places in my life, kept a log so that I would know where I would want to retire and Thailand came out on top. I still feel that I am in paradise and realize that it is not even close to perfect but then compared to most other places, this place still moves me. I am very happy and healthy to date. I do not support that but I fully understand why they are doing it. The problems start from borders being determined by folks who come from other places and they feel that they are entitled to setting up artificial borders and don't consider what that does to the natives of that place. Just like Putin wanting to take over the fertile ground of the Ukrainians. Yeah, the US has gotten involved in a lot of different countries too and many in those locations are not happy - this was done so that Americans did not have to face the horrors of war. I am a product of the cold war and don't plan on changing at this age.

BOI LTR important to maintain qualifications
Presnock replied to Presnock's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
as quoted by the BOI, if one does not maintain the qualifications during the period of the visa one could lose that visa. That is the standard requirement for any Thai visa. Whether they will check in anytime or not depends on someone's thoughts at some other time. -

The only problem is an Understanding of the word "unlimited" which my insurance wrote in their benefits package. I highlighted that very phrase and they still didn't fully understand it is my opinion as it did not have the actual amount necessary. A former US pensioner with the same health insurer (bluecross/blueshield) told me about contacting the insurer and explaining that the locals needed a monetary amount, as unlimited to them was not clear in that the hospitalization covered was at least $50K USD. The letter from the insurer fixed that problem. While the BOI instructions for the next pensioner below the wealthy one (less than 80K) said one could use 1099R but I sent that in and they wouldn't accept that the only reason I think is that OPM includes 4 copies on one page and the identifier was too small for them to fully understand - but they immediately accepted the 1040's. Fortunately my insurer was more lenient in understanding what and why the letter would suffice. Anyway enjoy the stay. Life is easy here unless ones worries too much about the differences. -
strange, I did the mail-in version for many years and always received my receipt. Then last year, the online bumped me out for some reason so I waited until I had t do something else and did it then as it was still within the 15/7 day windo. Good luck and as advised, wait 30-days and then show them the receipt you have from the post office.

the 1 year report can be done by anyone acting as your agent, i.e. your spouse, or whatever. You can fill in the necessary documents and send it with them. If immigration ever asks, I will have kept all my finances and medical coverage so I will not have any problem. Good luck, enjoy life wherever! -
Not really, I could care less if they protest as long as they don't inconvenience the majority. If they were the majority different folks would be elected and seeing as who we have to vote for over the past decades, maybe they are the majority. I was just suggesting that they move permanently to those other countries since they seem to be rooting for them rather than our friends. I at 77 have seen enough demonstrators over the years at home and in other countries where at times they did manage to change the government even. But they were peaceful and the majority and didn't negatively affect the rest of the citizens.
