  1. The problem at temples is that there can be so many pairs of shoes or sandals and the occasional problem of theft ... My b/f once told me his shoes were stolen outside a temple. I asked him what he did. He said he looked around for another pair that fitted him, put them on and walked away ...
  2. My experience here in Surin province is that it's a fading practice for shops. Where 10 years ago I would remove my sandals before entering the barber's shop, now if you did that he would indicate to you not to bother. Increasing population, pressures of work, old customs dying. But still strictly applied on entering your house or someone else's. A nice custom, I think, in the tropics - bare feet on cool tiled floor. I impose it on any of my friends visiting from Oz and they enjoy it too.
  3. Title of his lecture: "Democracy: How to get around it".
  4. In the democratic parts of the world, when one sees a headline about 'Student Activists', one can pretty safely assume they're of The Left (mild or extreme). But here in Thailand things are not so clear ... Being 'anti-corruption' could cover any part of the political spectrum depending on how the money's flowing, who's paying, which particular clan you were born into, how old you are and which side of bed you got out of this morning.
  5. Legal drafting in Thailand seems to allow for all possibilities. Vagueness is very useful when politics and money come in to play.
  6. AI: The answer to all life's problems.
  7. No doubt a sensible punishment but - from a 'Western' point of view - quite peculiar. No end to Thai inventiveness.
  8. RTN is not the RTA. Says it all.
  9. Always a sign of desperation: Good PR, zero effect.
  10. But annual preparation 2 months in advance (clearing khlongs, for instance) wouldn't require AI at all.
  11. Yes, that's my experience but of course much depends on where you live and what your connections are. I live here in south Surin amongst the poor uneducated iliiterate Khmers who are my b/f's family and village. What I always notice is that getting along with sisters & nieces is easier than with brothers & nephews even though I see the men now more often than the women. In particular the men who are not so close to my b/f (cousins, inlaws, uncles) will always lower their head when I'm around and not 'see' me. I interpret this as the usual problem of status: Not sure where I fit in the scheme of things, don't know whether to wai or wait for me to do so, and therefore best to ignore (which - given that I've had some 12 years of being around & paying regular (FIL & MIL) & irregular (health) bills for everyone - I find a little irritating.) Even ignoring the language barrier, there's no possibility of having a conversation on any subject because they simply know nothing outside of the village & local agriculture ...
  12. But Kiwis used to be such NAICE people! (I was one once, then I became an Aussie but still naice.)
  13. I had a similar experience with Wise Australia about 2 or 3 weeks ago. When I pressed the Funds for long stay in TH button, nothing happened & I couldn't get it to work. So I reported the glitch to Wise via the problem-reporting item, and it was fixed in 2 hours. They specifically said it was a problem at their end.
  14. So you need to ring or email Wise in Canada. Is it a change or just a glitch ... ?
  15. But I haven't died either.
  16. Well there's another one I didn't know. Golly how one's linguistic capacities expand by reading AN!
  17. A new meaning of the word 'chopper' for me. In my (antique) version of the English language it's a helicopter ...
  18. The PM (the current one) is wearing one of my shirts. My respect for him has just risen a little. Always thought he wasn't a bad guy, struggling against the odds ...
  19. Ah yes, those mysterious people who pull every string and manipulate every outcome ... The only problem is that noone ever does manage to identify them. (The notion that it's the 2 P generals or the very summit of the triangle strikes me as unrealistic.)
  20. Thaksin certainly looking better without the facemask. A potential PM there, I should think.
