  2. File photo for reference only A police crackdown in Tak province today, January 30, led to the arrest of 26 illegal immigrants hidden in a corn truck in the Mae Sot district. The joint operation involved the Ratchamanu Task Force, local police, and district officials. The incident took place at 11 pm at a checkpoint in Ban Huai Fon. Officers stopped a corn-loaded truck, registration 70-5887 Kamphaeng Phet, covered with a tarp. The driver, identified as 40-year-old Nichaphon, acted suspiciously, raising the officers' concerns. Upon inspection, authorities discovered the foreign workers concealed among the corn. The immigrants had crossed the border on foot, avoiding patrols, and were picked up by a Thai middleman aiming to transport them to Bangkok for employment. Both the driver and the immigrants were handed over to Mae Sot Police for legal action and repatriation. In another incident, in Chana district, Songkhla, police arrested 10 illegal migrants from Myanmar and two Thai drivers, attempting to travel to Malaysia. These arrests occurred on January 25 near tambon Taling Chan and involved a Honda sedan and a Mitsubishi Pajero. Following a tip-off, the immigration and highway police arrested 44-year-old Donjaras Marnbao and 30-year-old Nurhasan Dee-mae. Donjaras drove the Honda as a lookout, while Nurhasan's Pajero carried the migrants. All were taken into police custody for further investigation. -- 2025-01-30

  4. File photo for reference only Phuket's job market is booming, with an impressive 99.15% employment rate among its registered residents. This figure was highlighted at a recent meeting chaired by Deputy Governor Ronnarong Thipsiri at the Phuket Skill Development Institute 21, where they discussed labour strategies for 2025. According to the National Statistics Office, Phuket hosts a population of 619,978, with 500,422 individuals of working age (15 and older), representing 80.73% of the residents. Of this, 355,350 are in the labour force, with 352,288 employed, leaving only 3,062 individuals currently unemployed. Even with such high employment rates, businesses are actively seeking more workers. Between late September and late December 2024, employers advertised 1,335 roles across various fields, but 876 spots remained vacant as of January 23. The most sought-after positions include store sales staff, food and beverage service workers, customer service personnel, building cleaners, and general labourers. To address workforce shortages, the local government has rolled out training programmes based on 12 key economic and social principles, particularly in tourism, health tourism, food processing, and digital industries. For instance, health tourism has attracted 345 trainees, while digital industries boast 635 participants. The Phuket Skill Development Institute 21 is also spearheading a workforce training initiative worth 3.466 million baht, aiming to train 800 people. So far, 110 individuals have completed five of the planned 40 classes. Officials also reviewed the upcoming Independent Labour Promotion and Protection Act, set to begin in 2025. The act focuses on providing better protection for freelance workers, ensuring fair wages, and enhancing social security benefits. By closely monitoring the labour market and implementing strategic workforce initiatives, officials are optimistic about strengthening Phuket’s economy, boosting competitiveness, and improving residents' quality of life. -- 2025-01-30

  6. File photo for reference only Attention, Pattaya drivers! Starting Monday, February 3, new parking rules will be enforced to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety. If you're used to parking wherever convenient, you’ll need to change your habits, as hefty fines are on the way. These regulations focus on South Pattaya Road, prohibiting parking on footpaths and areas with red and white lines. Additionally, parking will be banned on alternate days based on whether the date is odd or even, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The city aims to ease traffic snarls, especially between the Wat Chai Mongkhol intersection and the Communications intersection (Third Road). Violators will face steep penalties: Wheel clamping comes with a 500-baht fine for illegal parking. Towing fees vary by vehicle size, with retrieval only possible from a designated city facility. Daily storage fees will apply if your vehicle is impounded. Repeat offenders risk fines escalating to 1,000 baht. City officials urge drivers to comply with these rules, emphasizing strict enforcement. They state, “These measures are to create smoother traffic, enhance road safety, and improve the environment for residents and visitors.” -- 2025-01-30

  8. File photo for reference only The Department of Health in Thailand has partnered with 234 restaurants across nine provinces to create PM 2.5 dust-free rooms, providing a healthier dining experience amidst rising pollution concerns. Dr. Amporn Benjapolphithak, the Director General of the Department of Health, explained that this initiative responds to the persistent high levels of harmful particulate matter affecting public health. The program aims to transform community spaces into safer environments, having already implemented dust-free zones in all major hospitals with plans to extend to local health centers. Working closely with the Restaurant Operators Association, the initiative encourages eateries to adopt dust-free measures, thus enhancing community wellbeing and boosting the appeal of Thai restaurants to tourists who value both taste and quality. Dr. Thiti Sawangtham, Deputy Director General, noted that recent training for more than 50 establishments in and around Bangkok is part of a broader effort to expand this initiative to regions like Phuket, Chiang Mai, and further within Bangkok. The goal is to increase the number of dust-free restaurants to over 20,000 in the next three months. Naina Chaitiamwong, who leads the Health Impact Assessment Division, highlighted that creating dust-free rooms involves converting existing spaces to prevent dust from entering and ensuring thorough cleaning to maintain a controlled environment. Essential practices include using air conditioners, air purifiers, and PM 2.5 monitors. For more information or to participate, interested parties can reach out to the Department of Health at 1478 or the Restaurant Operators Association. More guidelines are available on the dust-free room website. -- 2025-01-30

  10. Picture courtesy of tvpoolonline By Bright Choomanee A man confessed to stealing and killing a buffalo for its meat in Phetchabun province. The buffalo, cherished by its owner, was intended for breeding purposes. The theft and killing occurred on Saturday, January 25. Pian, a 49 year old resident of Ban Tio subdistrict in Lom Sak district, reported the theft to local police, stating that her buffalo, which she had been raising for over a year, disappeared after being grazed near a hillside. Evidence later revealed that the buffalo had been stolen, slaughtered, and butchered, causing significant distress to its owner. The buffalo was not only beloved but also planned to be used as a breeding bull. Officers from Ban Tio Police Station successfully tracked down and apprehended the suspect, identified as 56 year old Prasit from Ban Sok subdistrict in Lom Sak district. Prasit, who works as a woodcutter and forager, admitted to the crime. On the day of the incident, he had been cutting wood when he noticed the buffalo roaming nearby. Tempted by its plump appearance, he decided to kill it for its meat. He watched the buffalo for some time, and when he realised no one was looking for it, he tied it to a tree and killed it with a hoe. He then butchered the buffalo and placed its meat into a fertiliser bag, intending to take it home for consumption. After hearing voices searching for the buffalo, Prasit fled into the forest, eventually returning home. He later turned himself in following a police summons, reported KhaoSod. Initially, police charged Prasit and detained him at the Lom Sak provincial court for further legal proceedings. Source: The Thaiger -- 2025-01-30
  11. British drug dealer busted and back in cuffs after Thailand trip By Bob Scott Screenshot capture courtesy of YouTube A notorious drug dealer, who made a run for it to Thailand while his gang mates were being slammed with a 44-year sentence back in the UK, has found himself back behind British bars. 12. Screenshot capture courtesy of YouTube By Bob Scott A notorious drug dealer, who made a run for it to Thailand while his gang mates were being slammed with a 44-year sentence back in the UK, has found himself back behind British bars. Luke Atkin now faces a decade in jail after being nabbed by Thai police and sent packing back home. The 37 year old drug dealer, a key player in a narcotics syndicate that flooded York and Tadcaster with cocaine, was originally sentenced to ten years in his absence. His underworld associates were handed hefty sentences by Bradford Crown Court last October. Yet, defiant Atkin skipped his trial, opting for a hasty exit from the UK. Convicted of conspiracy to supply Class A substances, the former cage fighter was declared wanted when he didn’t show in court. Despite his far-flung escape, luck ran dry when Thai police picked him up, initially for another matter and overstaying his visa. After a stint in a Thai cell, he was deported and duly appeared at Bradford Crown Court for a quick hearing last week. As a result of his disappearance act, an extra four months were tacked onto his original sentence. Hailing from Warrington, Cheshire, Atkin frequently trekked to North Yorkshire for shady dealings with fellow gang members. His gang was dismantled by North Yorkshire Police’s Organised Crime Unit, which scooped up Class A drugs valued over £50,000 (2.1 million baht) during a sweeping investigation in 2022 and 2023. During a brief hearing on Tuesday, January 28, at Bradford Crown Court, Atkin appeared via video link from HMP Wandsworth. He pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to the court last April, leading Judge Watson to extend his sentence by an additional four months. His barrister, Emily Hassell, conceded that there was no viable mitigation to present on his behalf, given that he had fled the jurisdiction just as his trial was commencing. She stated that Atkin fully acknowledged the charge of failing to surrender and apologised for any delay caused as a result, Cheshire Live reported. Picture of Luke Atkin courtesy of Cheshire Live Judge Kirstie Watson observed that the trial had proceeded and Atkin had been convicted in his absence. “To that extent, your absence did not obstruct the course of justice. You pleaded guilty to this matter at the first opportunity once you had been brought back to this court.” In May last year The Thaiger reported that British Police had launched an international manhunt for a fugitive British man from Warrington, UK, believed to be hiding out in Thailand. 14. Photo via KomChadLuek By Petch Petpailin Police arrested a Thai woman for allegedly conspiring with her husband to murder her sister in November last year at a house in the central province of Pathum Thani. The woman denied all allegations, despite her husband having previously been arrested in connection with the death. The death of the Deputy Secretary of the Khlong Sam Sub-district Office in Pathum Thani, 57 year old Worrakanok Thepphimon, was reported on November 8 last year. She was found lying naked with multiple stab wounds across her body and a deep cut to her throat. Channel 8 interviewed Worrakanok’s sister, 51 year old Bongkot Kaewklom, who denied any knowledge of the murder. She told the media that she had heard her sister screaming at about 9.20pm. She rushed to check on her sister and found that she had already died. Bongkot reportedly lived with her husband, 43 year old Pratin, in a house located only 10 metres away from Worrakanok’s home. Police later arrested Pratin on November 11 after knives stained with Worrakanok’s blood were found in the storage compartment of his motorcycle. Despite her husband’s arrest, Bongkot remained a free person, as no evidence initially linked her to the murder. Crucial evidence undisclosed After more than two months of investigation, police arrested Bongkot at her home yesterday, January 29. Officers confirmed that they had crucial evidence indicating that Bongkot conspired with her husband to kill her biological sister but they could not yet disclose the details to the public. During police interrogation, Bongkot insisted on her innocence. “I deny the accusation. This can happen when an innocent person becomes a suspect. It’s possible.” Worrakanok’s son told Channel 8 that he had always suspected his aunt and had lived in fear with her since his mother’s death. He never expected that his aunt would be involved in his mother’s murder but Bongkot had failed to answer many of his questions since the incident. The son added that he felt relieved and safe following Bongkot’s arrest. He expressed confidence in the police investigation and believed that officers had sufficient evidence to justify her arrest. Further investigations into the case will continue, as Bongkot has denied the charges. She remains innocent until a court delivers its verdict. Source: The Thaiger -- 2025-01-30

  16. Photo courtesy of The Phuket News By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Two high school students from Cherng Talay Wittayakhom School have been hailed local heroines after their quick-thinking actions saved a man’s life earlier this month. Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat personally recognised Benchawan Kanphai aka Rinda and Siriporn Ditsawan, both Grade 12 students, in a special ceremony at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday, January 29, awarding them certificates of appreciation for their courage and selflessness. “Their dedication to public service is an inspiration to the entire community.” On January 6, near Cherng Talay Shrine on Srisoonthorn Road, an elderly man suffered a cardiac arrest while riding his motorbike with a sidecar. He lost consciousness, prompting bystanders to call the Cherng Talay Municipality rescue team for urgent help. When medics arrived, they immediately began CPR and used an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in an attempt to revive him. Needing extra assistance, they turned to the crowd—that’s when Benchawan stepped forward without hesitation. Armed with CPR training from a programme organised by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO), Benchawan confidently performed CPR and administered two shocks with the AED, helping to stabilise the man before he was rushed to hospital, reported The Phuket News. “I’m so happy that I could help save his life,” she later said, reflecting on the moment. The girls’ bravery and quick thinking have been widely celebrated, with emergency responders highlighting their story as a powerful reminder of the importance of first-aid training. 20. Picture courtesy of KhaoSod By Bright Choomanee A 63 year old man experienced a shocking incident while driving to pick up his daughter, as an unexpected object struck his car, causing significant damage and resulting in a fatality. Police are investigating the cause, speculating a possible fall from a U-turn bridge. Today, January 30, officers from Bang Bua Thong Police Station in Nonthaburi province, along with the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responded to reports of a person lying on the inbound lane of Kanchanaphisek Road, near the Phra Phimon Bridge in Bang Bua Thong subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi. Upon arrival, they coordinated with a forensic doctor from the Institute of Forensic Science to examine the scene. The man was identified as 68 year old Bunchoed Ruksarat, found face down, wearing green trousers and a cream t-shirt with an apron, resembling a vendor. A single sandal was discovered under the U-turn bridge approximately 50 metres from the body, with the other sandal found another 50 metres away. In the apron, a red pouch containing coins was discovered. Nearby, a car registration plate reading 4กฉ 8802 Bangkok was found about 100 metres from the scene, where a white Honda City with shattered windshields and a dented bonnet was parked. Family members and the car owner, informed of the incident, arrived at the scene. Relatives mentioned that the man resided in Soi Kantana and worked as a day labourer. They were unclear about why Bunchoed was in the area, which is far from his home. Somchai, the 63 year old driver of the car, explained that while driving in the main lane to pick up his daughter from Khlong Bang Phai BTS station, he heard a loud impact at the front of his vehicle. Initially, he thought it was a rock, so he pulled over. Man fall He was shocked and soon after encountered police officers who informed him they were unaware of what his car had collided with. While speaking with the officers, a passerby stopped and informed them of a body lying near the road’s median. It was then realised that the object that struck his car was indeed the body. Police officials recorded the incident and interviewed the car driver. The exact cause of the man’s fall remains unknown, and further investigation will involve reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity to determine if the man was crossing the road or fell from the U-turn bridge, reported KhaoSod. The body has been handed over to the Ruamkatanyu Foundation for transfer to the Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy. Source: The Thaiger -- 2025-01-30

  24. Photo by nito100 via Canva By Petch Petpailin A 14 year old boy in the Isaan province of Kalasin organised a gang attack on a classmate he suspected of leaking a video of him masturbating. The video reportedly prompted classmates to mock his penis size, calling him “little worm.” The non-profit organisation, Saimai Survive, shared the victim’s story on its official Facebook page yesterday, January 29. Their post stated… “Huh, a Grade 7 student was angry after his masturbation video was leaked, leading friends to call him a “little worm.” He then gathered friends to assault the classmate he believed was responsible for the leak.” A video of the assault, shared in the comments section, showed three teenagers physically attacking the victim, who is seen lying on the floor, unable to defend himself. Another teenager recorded the assault. Saimai Survive urged Superintendent Teerawut Wongsa-auan of the Kamalasai Police Station to take action. The organisation shared that the victim’s mother filed a complaint at the police station on January 27. Channel 7 later interviewed the victim and his family. The victim explained that the attack occurred at his home at around midday on January 23. He went to Kamalasai Hospital on January 25 to obtain a medical certificate to support the police complaint. He sustained two scratches on his neck, as well as wounds and bruises on his neck and back. Media reports suggest that one of the attackers shared the masturbation video with a woman, and the attacker suspected the victim of accessing and sharing it with other classmates. This resulted in the little worm insult. The victim did not confirm to the media whether or not he had leaked the video. The superintendent told the media that officers launched an investigation and issued summons warrants for the four suspects. He expects them to surrender to the police soon.
