  1. Photo via Channel 7 By Petch Petpailin A Thai man fatally shot his wife before taking his own life at their shared home in Soi Lat Phrao 87 in the Wang Thong Lang district of Bangkok yesterday, December 23, in an act of jealousy over her ex-husband. Officers from the Chok Chai Police Station were called to the scene to investigate the deaths of the couple, identified as 45 year old Chatchawan and 40 year old Walaiporn. Their bodies were found in the hallway of the house, with a 9mm gun located near Chatchawan’s body. Chatchawan was wearing white shorts and a light blue T-shirt, with a gunshot wound to his right temple. Walaiporn, dressed in a dark blue long-sleeve shirt and green trousers, had been shot three times in the back. Police searched the residence and discovered a note left in their bedroom on the second floor, written by Chatchawan. The note read… “You must remember that you are the reason for my death. Quit all the drugs. If you still use them, you will never change. Stop lying and do what you have said to me. Practise vegetarianism, observe religious precepts, and make merits for me too. I love you always.” Walaiporn’s aunt told Channel 7 that the couple had been living apart recently due to frequent arguments. Chatchawan was reportedly jealous because Walaiporn remained in contact with her ex-husband, as they shared responsibilities for their children. He was constantly worried that she might reunite with her former partner. On the day of the incident, Chatchawan asked Walaiporn’s mother to call her and request that she meet him at the house. Walaiporn arrived and was cleaning the two-storey residence before Chatchawan came downstairs from the second floor and fatally shot her. Shortly afterwards, he took his own life with the same weapon. 3. File photo for reference only The Thai cabinet has approved expanding the "digital wallet" program, offering 10,000 baht to citizens aged 60 and above. Payments will be made before January 29, ahead of the Chinese New Year. To qualify, seniors must register via the "thang rath" app. This second phase has a budget of 40 billion baht, aiding four million seniors. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat mentioned that those without smartphones can register through alternative methods after New Year, with details to be announced. The scheme's first phase began in late September, disbursing 10,000 baht each to 14.5 million people with disabilities and state welfare cardholders directly into their bank accounts. Delays in the second phase were caused by financial challenges. Meanwhile, about 20 million people from other age groups are still awaiting support. -- 2024-12-24

  5. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A festive spectacle on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road through Bangkok captured the attention of many, including that of law enforcement, as a car adorned with reindeer antlers, a red nose, and twinkling Christmas lights drove along the busy street. The driver, 29 year old Supattha, admitted to officers that he decorated his vehicle in collaboration with friends to attract more passengers during the holiday season, as he works as a ride-sharing driver. The viral TikTok clip, showcasing the uniquely decorated vehicle, quickly amassed over 12 million views and was shared more than 200,000 times, sparking debate among netizens about the legality of such decorations on vehicles. The video prompted a response from law enforcement. Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom, Metropolitan Police Bureau Commander, along with Deputy Commander Police Major General Thawat Wongsanga, instructed Traffic Police Commander Police Major General Surachet Bundit and his team to investigate the incident yesterday, December 23. This led to Supattha being summoned to the Vibhavadi Rangsit Traffic Control Centre to address the legal implications of his actions. The investigation revealed that the decorations, while festive, were not legally permissible under Thailand’s vehicle regulations. Supattha explained that the Christmas lights and reindeer embellishments were meant to align with the festive season and were intended as a marketing strategy to draw more passengers to his ride-sharing service. “I wanted to spread some holiday cheer and, at the same time, make my car more noticeable to potential customers,” Supattha explained. Despite the driver’s festive intentions, the police cited him for modifying his vehicle’s lighting system, a violation of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1979. Supattha received a fine for two separate offences: 1,000 baht for altering the vehicle’s lights and an additional 500 baht for using non-compliant equipment, totalling 1,500 baht. Law enforcement officials advised Supattha to caution his friends, who had also decorated their vehicles, about the potential legal consequences of such modifications. Police emphasised the importance of adhering to regulations to ensure road safety and prevent distractions for other drivers, reported KhaoSod. “We understand the festive spirit, but safety on the roads is paramount. Modifications that could impair visibility or distract other drivers are not permissible.” Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-24

  9. File photo for reference only In Khon Kaen, a disturbing incident occurred when 24-year-old Kotchakorn discovered she was being secretly recorded while using a restaurant restroom. Despite the perpetrator's confession, evidence was deleted, hindering immediate police action. The incident happened early on December 23. Kotchakorn noticed a smartphone from the men's side while in the restroom. Confronting two men, one with a blue phone confessed, "I did it." Police were called, and the restaurant’s staff attempted mediation, but Kotchakorn insisted on pressing charges. Police seized the phone for investigation, but data recovery remains uncertain. The restaurant distanced itself from the illegal act, blaming the part-time employee. However, Kotchakorn argued the restaurant shared responsibility due to unsafe restroom design. Meanwhile, the perpetrator’s university has launched its own investigation, with a resolution expected by January's end. Kotchakorn questioned whether proposed penalties were sufficient. Kotchakorn called for better restroom privacy to prevent similar incidents. The restaurant plans to improve restroom security, but management refused media interviews due to ongoing legal matters. CCTV footage confirmed the intrusion and was handed over to authorities. -- 2024-12-24

Police investigations, using CCTV footage and information from informants, led to Kritsana's arrest at a flat in Bang Na. His criminal record shows previous arrests for similar scams, particularly in the Pathumwan area, where he pretended to own businesses and swindled money from foreign tourists. Kritsana recently left prison on May 2, having served time for theft. He confessed to returning to fraud after his clothing business in Huai Khwang failed during the COVID-19 pandemic. He targeted tourist-heavy areas, including Pathumwan, Yan Nawa, and Plubplachai. Currently in custody, Kritsana awaits further legal proceedings as investigations continue. -- 2024-12-24

  13. File photo for reference only Nearly 20 years after the Boxing Day tsunami, one man in Phang Nga province stands as a beacon of hope and safety for his community. Meet 59-year-old Banlue Choosin, a former fisherman turned guardian of the Andaman Sea. Ban Nam Khem village, where Banlue lives, was one of the areas hit hardest by the 2004 disaster, which claimed 230,000 lives across multiple countries, including 5,400 in Phang Nga alone. Banlue remembers that day vividly. "It was like a very, very tall wall of mist like dust covering the whole area," he recalled, as he helplessly watched the tsunami take his family and mother-in-law. Determined to prevent such devastation again, Ban Nam Khem residents have transformed their community into a model of disaster preparedness. The village now has a concrete tsunami shelter, two alarm systems, and clearly marked evacuation routes. At the heart of this system is Banlue, who volunteers as a sea watcher. He monitors the waters for any anomalies after regional earthquakes and reports them to the provincial government. The community takes readiness seriously. Every Wednesday morning, the tsunami alarms play the national anthem to ensure the system works. Residents are encouraged to keep a "grab bag" with essential documents for quick evacuations. Approaching his 60th birthday, Banlue continues teaching his family and neighbors vital lessons, such as: "Don't just stand and watch. Leave calmly." Neungduangjai Sritrakarn, another survivor, described how her mother’s urgent warning to evacuate saved them. Noticing unusual whitecaps and hearing a relative's warning, the family grabbed important documents and fled on motorbikes, witnessing a massive wall of water as they left. Peter Baines, a former Australian forensic cop, is nearing the end of a 1,400-kilometer run across Thailand. His journey, "Run to Remember," commemorates the 20th anniversary of the tsunami, which affected 230,000 lives worldwide, including 5,400 in Thailand. He is expected to reach Khao Lak by December 26. -- 2024-12-24

  17. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A cybercrime investigation led to the arrest of a school gardener who allegedly ran a secret group selling illicit footage of women and students. This operation reportedly generated a significant income over two years, accumulating upwards of 120,000 baht. The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) held a press conference in Muang Thong Thani at 12pm yesterday, December 23, where senior officers, including Police Lieutenant General Trirong, announced the arrest. The gardener from a primary school in Sukhothai province had been identified as the operator of a secret group distributing voyeuristic videos. The investigation began in November when another individual was apprehended for similar offences, revealing that they had purchased the videos from a VK application group. Undercover operatives discovered that interested parties would join the group by sending a 300-baht True Money gift card through the LINE application. Once inside, members were exposed to a trove of explicit content, including surreptitiously filmed videos of women and students. Financial trails pointed to 36 year old Supap from Sukhothai, as the individual benefiting from these transactions. Based on the evidence, police secured an arrest warrant from the Criminal Court and a search warrant for Supap’s residence in Wang Nam Khiao, Ban Dan Lan Hoi district. During the raid, police confiscated a mobile phone and a laptop. A thorough examination of these devices revealed a VK account employed for advertising and recruiting new members into the group. Investigators found 1,064 files on the Mega application, categorised into albums containing illicit footage, including under-skirt videos of celebrities, clips of students, and footage from public restrooms. Supap allegedly claimed that the videos sold in the group were sourced from other groups and reposted to his own. Over the past two years, his activities reportedly earned him between 5,000 and 10,000 baht monthly, amassing a total of more than 120,000 baht. Given Supap’s position as a gardener at a primary school in Sukhothai, there were concerns he might have recorded explicit content of students on-site. Police conducted a detailed inspection of the school’s restrooms where he worked but found no hidden cameras or recording devices. The investigation remains ongoing, as police are determined to ensure that such illicit activities do not occur within educational institutions, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-24

  19. Photo via ThaiRath By Petch Petpailin A Thai man fatally attacked his wife in a rice field in the Isaan province of Ubon Ratchathani on Sunday, 22 December, claiming she pranked him by rubbing menstrual blood on his mouth. The deceased woman’s relative expressed doubt about his account. The 35 year old Thai man, Phanumart Manee-on, surrendered himself to officers at Khueang Nai Police Station following the death of his wife, 35 year old Pawinee Sangkasi. Phanumart later led police to the scene of the incident in a paddy field in the Khueang Nai district of Ubon Ratchathani. At the scene, police discovered Pawinee’s body near a small cottage in the rice field. The report did not specify the wounds or bruises found on her body. Phanumart told police that he and his wife had been drinking alcohol near the cottage. According to him, Pawinee, who was intoxicated, pranked him by smearing menstrual blood on his mouth. Enraged, he reacted by repeatedly kicking and punching her. Phanumart claimed that his wife collapsed and lost consciousness. He waited at the scene, assuming she would regain consciousness, but she died there. Pawinee’s niece expressed strong disbelief in Phanumart’s account during an interview with Channel 8. She revealed that Phanumart frequently assaulted Pawinee. According to the niece, relatives or witnesses always intervened in their past violent altercations, preventing escalation. In this instance, however, no one was present to witness or intervene, which tragically led to Pawinee’s death. Police are yet to confirm Phanumart’s account, results of an autopsy are expected to determine the accuracy of his claims. Phanumart was charged under Section 290 of the Thai Criminal Code for physical assault resulting in death. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of three to 15 years.
