  1. Airports of Thailand (AOT) has announced plans to compensate property owners affected by the third runway project at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, now scheduled for completion in early 2025. This development was highlighted by Bangkok City Council Chairman, Surajit Phongsingwitthaya, who indicated that the exact number of affected properties is still under assessment. The new runway, which extends four kilometres in length and 60 metres in width, is strategically positioned parallel to the airport's first runway and is intended primarily for landings. Its creation is poised to boost the airport's capacity significantly, increasing it from 68 to 94 planes per hour, tackling the growing demands of air travel. Officials are focused on mitigating environmental impacts, with the Pollution Control Department measuring noise levels in surrounding neighbourhoods. This proactive approach underscores a commitment to minimising disruption for local residents. Recent discussions, involving multiple key agencies such as AOT, the Transport Ministry, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, were held to address residents' inquiries about the compensation process. While specifics regarding financial compensation and other forms of support are yet to be shared, anticipation remains high among those likely to be impacted. As the project progresses, residents eagerly await more detailed information on their compensation and support options during this significant infrastructural transition. 3. A Thai man yesterday turned himself in at a police station after brutally assaulting a 70 year old taxi driver following an accident on Borommaratchachonnani Road in Bangkok on November 19. The old driver, who has no family members, remains in hospital since the incident. A viral video shared on a Facebook news page showed the motorcycle rider, later identified as 25 year old Teeraphat, physically assaulting the old taxi driver, whose name has not been disclosed, in the middle of Borommaratchachonnani Road near the Arun Amarin Intersection in Bangkok. The video depicted a heated argument between the two over the accident. Teeraphat accused the taxi driver of failing to use his indicator before changing lanes, which he claimed caused a collision with his motorcycle. Meanwhile, the taxi driver argued that Teeraphat was the one who failed to use his indicator. Teeraphat demanded compensation for the damage to his motorcycle but the taxi driver maintained that there was no collision. Suddenly, Teeraphat shoved the taxi driver to the ground, kicked him in the face, and then stomped on his head before walking away. According to Channel 7, a traffic police officer arrived at the scene and escorted Teeraphat to the police station for drug and alcohol testing. Claim to misunderstand Teeraphat was released shortly afterwards as the tests came back negative and no formal complaint was filed at the time. The taxi driver, unable to file a report due to his injuries, had no family to assist him, and police were unable to contact anyone on his behalf. The taxi driver remains in hospital with severe injuries, including fractures to his facial bones and jaw. He also lacked a mobile phone, making communication even more difficult. Following the public outcry over the viral video, Teeraphat, accompanied by his father, turned himself in at Taling Chan Police Station yesterday, November 25. He apologised on camera, claiming he misunderstood the situation and thought the victim intended to attack him, prompting him to act in self-defence. Teeraphat repeatedly expressed remorse to the victim and the public and promised to enter monkhood after being released from custody. He has been charged with physically assaulting another person causing severe injury, which carries a penalty of six months to 10 years in prison and a fine of between 10,000 and 200,000 baht under Section 297 of the Criminal Law. Teeraphat also faces up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both, for damaging the victim’s property under Section 358 of the Criminal Law. 5. Three people have confessed to attacking a monk, citing personal feelings as their motivation, denying any hired involvement. The incident took place at a popular television station, leaving the monk injured. The lawyer of the three suspects, 45 year old Panuphan, 56 year old Thanathat, and 53 year old Chawalit, addressed the media yesterday, November 25 at 12.40pm at Bang Khen Police Station regarding their involvement in the attack on Phra Khru Palad Thirathana Nareuthara Metta Thammo, also popularly known as พระปีนเสา (monk who climbed the pole). The lawyer stated briefly that they would provide statements to the investigators before commenting on the matter further. When questioned about the possibility of being hired for the assault, he tersely replied that there was no such arrangement. Investigators have initially charged the trio with two offences: assault and premeditated assault. The charges stem from the fact that the suspects arrived together, planned the attack, and waited for the monk to finish filming a television programme before executing their plan. All three suspects have admitted to the crime and expressed willingness to offer compensation to the victim. Notably, the individual who performed the flying kick, an ex-boxer, remarked that he was uncertain about the force he exerted in the kick, fearing it might render the monk unconscious. The three suspects avoided being photographed by journalists as they entered and exited the North Bangkok District Court to arrange bail proceedings. Police confirmed that the act was indeed premeditated, as the suspects had coordinated their appearance and actions with specific intent. The monk, known for his unique persona and appearances on television, has garnered a public following, adding a layer of complexity to the incident. The suspects have reportedly shown a degree of remorse, recognising the gravity of their actions and indicating a willingness to make amends. Legal proceedings are underway to address the charges, with the suspects navigating the judicial process as they seek to resolve the matter, reported KhaoSod. 6. Thai teacher confesses to sexually abusing schoolboys Photo via Matichon A Thai teacher in the central province of Ratchaburi confessed to sexually abusing many schoolboys. 7. A Thai teacher in the central province of Ratchaburi confessed to sexually abusing many schoolboys. He stated that he could no longer recall the number of victims or the specific students involved. A former Member of Parliament candidate from the dissolved Move Forward Party (MFP), Piramate Maneechote, accompanied nine young victims and their parents to Suan Phueng Police Station on November 25 to file a complaint against the teacher, later identified as 30 year old Krittha. The parents reported to the police that Krittha lured the young boys to meet him and he sexually assaulted them. These incidents occurred within the school premises, including the teacher’s office, bathroom, and a mushroom farm. If any victims resisted, the teacher would physically assault them before the sexual abuse. Some victims were subjected to inappropriate touching, while others were raped. Most of the young victims were from ethnic minority groups, with the youngest being only nine years old. Some of them exhibited signs of fear and anxiety, while others developed negative behaviours as a result of the abuse. The mother of one victim told Thai PBS that her son, previously a shy child, unexpectedly groped a friend’s private parts in front of her. She had never witnessed such behaviour before and believed it was a consequence of the sexual abuse. Suspect’s confession The parents and guardians revealed that they had reported the matter to the school director on June 21 but no action was taken. As a result, they sought help from the former MP candidate. Police arrested Krittha later that day and ordered him to lead officers to the locations where the sexual assaults took place. Krittha reportedly confessed to the child sexual abuse, stating it was his personal sexual preference. He also admitted to being sexually attracted to both males and females. However, Krittha denied that all nine schoolboys were victims. He claimed to have assaulted many young students but in different ways. He even stated that he could not remember the number of students he had abused or the specific students involved. Krittha faces three charges, including: Section 277 and 275 of the Criminal Law: sexually assaulting a minor under 13 years old who is a disciple under the case. The penalty is one-third harsher than the penalty for violating Section 277, which is imprisonment for seven to 20 years and a fine of 140,000 to 400,000 baht, or life imprisonment. Section 279 and 275 of the Criminal Law: committing an indecent act to a person aged under 15 years old, whether such girl shall consent or not. The penalty is one-third harsher than the penalty for violating Section 279, which is imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both. Section 317 of the Criminal Law: taking a child under 15 years of age away from their parents for an indecent purpose. The penalty is imprisonment of three to 15 years and a fine of 6,000 to 30,000 baht. By Petch Petpailin Photo via Matichon Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-26

  9. A 47 year old chef working on a cruise ship was found dead in his hotel room in Udon Thani province, apparently due to severe food poisoning which led to a heart attack. The incident was reported at 5pm yesterday. Officers from the Na Kha sub-station, led by investigative officer Watthapong Chamnongudom, responded to the scene at a hotel in the Nong Samrong municipality. Medical staff from Udon Thani Central Hospital and volunteers from the Udon Sawang Metta Thammasathan Foundation accompanied them. The lifeless body of Suthon, the chef, was discovered face-down beside the bed in his second-floor hotel room. He was wearing a white t-shirt but was otherwise unclothed, with a towel wrapped around his leg and shorts found nearby. His lower body was covered in faecal matter, indicating severe diarrhoea. There were traces of faeces leading from the bathroom to the bedroom, but no signs of a struggle or external injuries on his body. Police estimate that he had been dead for at least 12 hours before discovery. Inside the room, investigators found a mobile phone and a tablet on the bed, with a bottle of drinking water on the bedside table. The room also contained a set of kitchen knives, dry food, snacks, perfume, a razor, and a large suitcase with clothes on top. Several empty beer cans were discovered in the bin, suggesting recent consumption. A hotel receptionist, 50 year old Karnrawee recounted that the deceased had rented the room for a month beginning on November 20. On November 22, she had brought some snacks to his room, and he mentioned that the gas stove was not working. She promised to deliver an electric stove, which she left at his door on Sunday, November 24. Later in the day, a friend of Suthon, who was also known to her, messaged her via LINE, expressing concern after not hearing from him for a day. The friend requested her to check on him. Busy with her duties, she asked the housekeeper to knock on his door and eventually open it with a key. The housekeeper quickly returned with news of the grim discovery, prompting Karnrawee to notify the police. Police initially hypothesise that Suthon may have suffered from severe diarrhoea or food poisoning, possibly exacerbated by a pre-existing medical condition, leading to his death. He was reportedly staying alone in the hotel room. The body has been transferred to Udon Thani Central Hospital for a thorough autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. “It was shocking to find him like that.” Karnrawee reiterated her disbelief, noting that there were no prior signs of distress when she last interacted with him. The police will continue their investigation while awaiting the autopsy results to confirm the cause of death, reported KhaoSod. 11. In a powerful stand against abuse, thousands of people filled Saphan Hin Public Park at dawn on Sunday, November 24, participating in a walk-run campaign to raise awareness and call for an end to violence against women, children, and family members. The impactful event, organised by the Phuket Juvenile and Family Court, marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Children, observed globally on November 25. The campaign united various agencies and organisations from across Phuket in a collective effort to strengthen initiatives against domestic violence. With a focus on education, public outreach, and cooperative action, the event aimed to empower the community and encourage a proactive approach to shielding vulnerable individuals from abuse. Worawut Thawatsin, President of the Court of Appeal Region 8, kicked off the event, flagging off eager participants ready to run for the cause. Worawut was joined by notable figures including Sittirak Duangsrithong, Chief Judge of the Phuket Juvenile and Family Court, Vice Governor Adul Chuthong, and representatives from government and legal organisations, who showed solidarity in the fight against domestic violence. The event paid tribute to the origins of this international day, honouring the Mirabal sisters, Dominican activists murdered on November 25, 1961. The United Nations chose this date to spotlight global action against violence towards women, with the white ribbon symbol, a global emblem for the cause, visible throughout the event as a call to action against abuse. Participants stressed the vital role of community involvement in addressing these pressing issues, and the event was lauded as a resounding success. The turnout underscored the region’s commitment to creating a safer, more equitable society, with the crowd leaving energised and united in their mission to end domestic violence for good, reported Phuket News. 13. A foreign man residing in Thailand expressed frustration after his shoes were stolen at a beach, sparking a discussion on the commonality of such incidents in the country. TikTok user @imlukematthew shared a video yesterday, November 25, detailing his experience. He explained that he had ridden his motorcycle to a beach, left his shoes beneath it, and found them missing upon his return. “I’ve just been robbed in Thailand. I came to the beach, parked my motorcycle, left my shoes with it, and now they’re gone.” The clip also showed the exact spot where the shoes were left, highlighting that they were taken from directly under the motorcycle. The foreigner further expressed his disbelief and annoyance. “Someone stole my shoes off the motorcycle. Now I have feet but no shoes. Look, they’re gone. What’s going on? Why would someone steal shoes? My God, they were worth 2,500 baht, and they’ve just been taken. What’s going on? My God, do you really think someone just took them? Why? This is a bad day. What’s going on?” As the post gained traction, numerous users commented, offering possible explanations and sharing similar experiences. Many speculated that the culprit might have been a dog, potentially having sneaked off with the shoes. Others shared their frustrations over the frequent disappearance of footwear, regardless of where they leave them, be it at the beach, a temple, or even their doorstep. This incident also sheds light on the cultural practice of leaving shoes outside, which is common in many Asian countries, including Thailand. Visitors are often advised to be mindful of where they leave their shoes, especially in public or busy areas. Despite the frustration, many accept it as a cultural quirk and adjust to it over time, reported KhaoSod. 15. On November 25, in a horrifying series of events that unfolded in the early hours, a charging phone turned a peaceful abode into a blazing inferno in the Chiang Rak Yai subdistrict of Sam Khok district, Pathum Thani province. The root cause of this catastrophic fire, as dispatched by the Chiang Rak Yai Municipality Radio Centre, was a faulty charger cable. The scene of the incident, Number 10, nestled amid the area's closely packed houses, was a modest wooden structure until it was abruptly claimed by uncontrollable flames. With the fire threatening to spread across the neighbourhood, the immediate response was a testament to the area's emergency preparedness and community spirit. Firefighters from the Chiang Rak Yai Subdistrict Municipality and additional manpower from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, along with local police and the village headman, Winai Wankra, confronted the raging threat head-on. Assisting them, members of the community joined in with chemical tanks and buckets of water, highlighting an inspiring example of community action under peril. The battle, lasting a nerve-racking twenty minutes, concluded with the stubborn inferno finally extinguished, posing no further threat to the adjacent homes. Despite their efforts, the house had been reduced to ashes. Its owner, 42-year-old Charoen (surname withheld), bravely ventured into the remnants of his home, retrieving some clothing amid the charred wreckage. In retrospect, Charoen reported setting his phone to charge with a suspicious charger and stepping away. Returning to the appalling sight of his transformed residence, he couldn't attribute the disaster to anything but the dubious charger. The incident serves as a wake-up call about the risks presented by faulty electronic devices, particularly chargers that often stay plugged in, unattended. The priority should be safety, urging users to inspect their chargers for any signs of risk and invest in quality, reliable units to prevent any untoward incidents. 17. The well-loved holiday destination of Koh Samui is today grappling with the harsh realities of an unruly climate change. Turbulent seas and relentless rains have led to a pause in many tourist activities as the safety of locals and visitors alike becomes the focus amid worsening weather conditions. Several popular landmarks, including top-tier waterfalls such as Hin Lad, Na Muang, and Wang Sao Thong, are now off-limits due to risky high water levels. The decision issued by the Koh Samui district office is in keeping with the over-arching safety-first strategy being employed across the island. In response to the raging waters, the Lomprayah High Speed Catamaran Co., which provides comprehensive travel services, had no other go than to alter its course. The firm diverted its sea-bound services from the routinely used Wat Na Phra Lan Pier to the presumably safer Saphan Klang Pier in Ang Thong and Bangrak Pier in Bo Phut. The Muko Ang Thong Marine National Park is taking no chances and has put a temporary halt to visitor admittance until conditions become less perilous. However, ferry services running between Don Sak, Koh Samui, and Koh Pha Ngan have so far remained resilient, with no changes reported to their schedules. While the local authorities strive to manage the situation, a rescue operation is ongoing for a missing French tourist. The 77-year-old, identified as Rene Mary Core, was last seen onboard a doomed boat trip that culminated in a capsizing incident amidst violent winds on the Rajjaprabha Dam’s reservoir. According to witnesses, Core’s leg became entangled under a bench as the boat overturned, inciting an immediate rescue effort. The same unpredictable weather is proving a nightmare for the search team. Yet, they remain committed to finding the missing man, as hospitalised injured companions and others who managed to reach safer grounds in Phuket anxiously wait for hopeful news. As the weather remains frantic, tourists and residents are advised to stay vigilant and safe. With emergency services on high alert, the quaint, sun-soaked beaches of Koh Samui now stand eerily quiet, awaiting calmer skies and normalcy. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-25

  19. East Pattaya is resonating with community spirit today after a perilous live dog rescue. The canine reportedly got wedged between two enormous concrete power poles in Pong Sub-district's Soi Ban Nong Hiang region on Saturday, November 23rd. Members of the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre received the distress call and raced against time to the dog's aid. On reaching the sight, the rescue team found an already formed crowd of concerned local residents surrounding the captive two-year-old male dog. Visibly fatigued, the poor animal could not get himself free from the overwhelming high-voltage power poles trapping him. Initial attempts at a manual rescue were in vain, forcing the team to step up their rescue efforts. Nongprue municipality staff then made the pivotal decision to deploy a crane from their heavy-duty fleet. Expertly operated, it managed to shift one of the enormous poles, relieving the distressed dog of his concrete bonds. Sukanya Ngernpiem, among the first to arrive, saw the dog's predicament on a viral social media post. Her swift intervention alongside others in alerting the rescue team undeniably played a crucial role in the positive outcome. The Sawang Boriboon team immediately ferried the dog to safety following his daring rescue. He is currently cared for in a local shelter while finding him a suitable adoption family is underway. This daring dog rescue highlights the extraordinary extents ordinary people and communities will go to help distressed animals. We remain hopeful our brave canine friend will soon find his forever home, surrounded by a family that loves him dearly. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-25

  21. Bangkok's celebrated Khao San Road, long a hub of backpacker activity, faces a slump in hotel reservations just ahead the festive season. Khaosan Business Association President Sanga Ruangwattanakul attributes the decline to European tourists' uncertainty amidst the persisting Russia-Ukraine conflict. Coinciding with a wider downturn, reservations for the key dates of December 30 to December 31 have decreased to approximate 60%, falling from last year's 70%. European visitors, predominantly from the UK, France, Germany, and Italy, usually contribute to 80% of Khao San's tourist demographic, with a lesser proportion hailing from other Asian countries. In spite of the disappointing figures, Sanga remains positive, anticipating an influx of bookings closer to the festive period. Khao San Road, staying true to its energetic character, will host a New Year’s Eve countdown that aims to attract between 50,000 to 70,000 tourists. On an average, each tourist spends around 1,000 baht thereby potentially injecting over 70 million baht into the local economy. Christmas festivities will commence on December 24 with a splendid display of Christmas lights. Sanga is optimistic about Khao San's enduring appeal as a tourist hot-spot, although he admits that sales of alcohol, a significant contributor to revenues, haven’t been as buoyant. A lack of spending from Thai visitors, conscious of financial constraints, is a factor dimming economic vibrancy. To circumvent these financial challenges, Sanga proposes government measures to stimulate consumer spending, including tax breaks through initiatives such as Easy E-Receipt or the Khon La Khreung co-payment subsidy. He also supports plans to enhance revenues by focusing on the 5F industries — food, film, festivals, Thai boxing, and fashion — to attract more global tourists to Thailand. Despite current obstacles, hopes remain high for Khao San Road as the New Year’s Eve countdown closes in. The belief is that the celebrated strip will once again buzz with the vibrancy and dynamism that make it an essential stop on every traveller's itinerary. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-25

  23. In a landmark update, member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) airlines will soon be granted the freedom to perform multiple stopovers across member territories. This marks a significant change from the current provisions, which only permit direct return flights between two destinations. This announcement was made by Anthony Loke, Malaysian Transport Minister, noting that this change will be activated once all ASEAN member states sign Protocol 5 on Own Stopover Rights. However, all ASEAN members, excluding Myanmar and Indonesia, have signed Protocol 5 as of now. During a press conference, Loke provided an example stating, "A flight departing from Kuala Lumpur could go to Singapore, proceed to Bali, Indonesia, and from there carry on to other ASEAN destinations.” This news was proclaimed at the 30th Asian Transport Ministers (ATM) and the 58th Senior Transport Officials Meetings (STOM). Loke strongly believes that this protocol will boost regional air connectivity, offering airlines more operational flexibility. "This initiative will push tourism and accentuate trade by proposing more seamless and convenient air travel options across the region." Asian carriers, including Malaysian operators who possess substantial regional route networks, are anticipated to reap significantly from this enhancement. The protocol has been dispatched to the remaining member states yet to sign. According to Loke, we can expect Protocol 5 to be implemented by 2025, once all the signatures from member states are brought onboard. This move signals the start of a new era for ASEAN airlines and an exciting switch for passengers who shall now enjoy more travel routes and options. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-25

  25. A significant breakthrough in the global agriculture scene is on the horizon as Israeli Ambassador Orna Sagiv outlined the promise that Israeli food technology holds for Thailand's farming industry. Speaking at a recent Bangkok event, 'Savor the Future of Food', the ambassador singled out Thailand's crucial role in worldwide food production, honouring it as the 'kitchen of the world'. With a pressing global food crisis, Sagiv underscored the importance of Thailand's thriving agriculture sector. She proposed that Israel's groundbreaking agricultural innovations could serve as a power-up for Thailand’s efforts in fortifying its already robust food production and farming sectors. Israel views Thailand as much more than a potential business partner. As Ambassador Sagiv pointed out, the co-working connection between Thailand and Israel paints a promising picture for both nations - A partnership that extends beyond their borders, promising the potential for escalated food security worldwide. "There's something here that screams 'mutually beneficial'," she said, alluding to the fact that Israeli tech-minded startups, renowned for their innovation, frequently grapple with the challenges of penetrating larger markets. This joint venture could provide the critical boost needed to navigate these challenges successfully. On the other side of the coin, Thai food industry behemoths are widely regarded for their extensive experience and instinctive ability to adapt foreign innovations to suit the Southeast Asian palate. For Sagiv, this provides an opportunity for Thai companies to 'localise' Israeli food tech effectively. "The mutual interest has been escalating this year, between big Thai firms and Israeli startups, especially those focused on pioneering food tech solutions for future challenges," Sagiv noted in her address. Proponents of this partnership believe that the combination of Israeli ingenuity and Thai market acumen has the potential to elevate the food tech industry and mitigate food insecurity globally. The partnership, while beneficial for both Israel and Thailand, promises to contribute to a more food-secure future for the world. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-25
