  3. Police in Surat Thani apprehended a monk, acting as an abbot of a renowned temple, for indecent acts against six young boys. During their search, they discovered sex enhancement drugs in his room. The monk confessed before being charged with multiple offences. At 12.30am yesterday, November 20, Police Colonel Paisan Sangthep, Deputy Commander of Surat Thani Provincial Police, alongside Police Colonel Pornnarong Kanorachai and a team from Phrasaeng Police Station, arrested 44 year old Chaturaphat. He was the head of a temple in Phrasaeng district, Surat Thani. Community leaders had previously alerted the police about his inappropriate behaviour towards young novice monks and boys aged between 11 and 13, revealed Pol. Col. Pornnarong. “Yesterday evening community leaders informed us of Chaturaphat’s improper sexual conduct. We immediately dispatched officers alongside community leaders to investigate the claims.” Upon investigation, Chaturaphat confessed to having engaged in indecent acts with the young boys from April to October of this year. He admitted to inviting the boys and novice monks to massage him in his quarters, where the incidents occurred. Consequently, he was voluntarily defrocked at Samphan Temple in Phrasaeng district. The police then conducted a thorough search of his quarters. The search revealed two sachets of a particular brand of sex enhancement supplements and four sachets of sex enhancement coffee placed on the bedside table in his room. These items were seized as evidence. Chaturaphat was subsequently handed over to investigators at Phrasaeng Police Station to face charges, reported KhaoSod. The charges include committing indecent acts with children under the age of 13, whether or not the child consents, and taking a child under 15 away from their parents or guardians for indecent purposes. Additional charges comprise committing indecent acts with a child under 13 who is under his care and taking a child under 15 for indecent purposes, irrespective of consent. 5. A 59 year old Thai man accused a 23 year old nursing student of running a love scam after he gave her 370,000 baht in dowry but no wedding was held. Thanakrit, the 59 year old owner of a tutoring institute, turned to non-profit organisation Saimai Survive after failing to get his money back from his 23 year old girlfriend, Fon. He reported the romance scam to Tungkhru Police Station but the case did not progress, leaving him desperate. Thanakrit explained that he met Fon on a dating application in December of last year. Fon introduced herself as a junior nursing student. They communicated online until Fon confessed her love for him on Valentine’s Day this year. They arranged a meeting in person and began a romantic relationship. After that, Fon visited him frequently at his home, and they travelled together across various provinces in Thailand, enjoying a happy relationship. He covered all expenses and even bought Fon a new mobile phone. Thanakrit said he was asked to host the wedding after meeting Fon’s family in the Isaan province of Surin on April 29. Her family questioned him about whether the couple had engaged in sexual intercourse and Fon admitted they had. Following conservative traditions, Fon’s family insisted that he host the wedding, and the ceremony was scheduled for July 14. The family requested a 500,000 baht dowry from Thanakrit, which he agreed to pay. Fon asked him to transfer 372,000 baht to her first, with the remaining 128,000 baht to be paid on their wedding day. Sexy dress and online affair Thanakrit agreed to make the advance payment but noticed that the account Fon instructed him to transfer the money to belonged to her nursing institute’s official bank account. As the couple eagerly anticipated their forthcoming wedding, Fon moved in with Thanakrit at his residence in Bangkok. Together, they busied themselves with preparations, even going so far as to rent a wedding dress. However, despite their efforts and aspirations, their plans never materialised. Thanakrit said he became unimpressed with Fon’s habit of wearing revealing clothes and also caught her chatting with other men on social media. He decided to confront her family, which led to the cancellation of the wedding due to Fon’s anger. Thanakrit demanded the return of his money but the woman refused. She suggested he contact the nursing institute directly if he wanted his money back. Thanakrit later learned that Fon tricked him into transferring the dowry to the institute to pay for her tuition fees. Thanakrit contacted the institute in hopes of retrieving his money but was unsuccessful. The institute advised him to resolve the matter with his ex-girlfriend. He reached out to the police but received no progress, so he turned to Saimai Survive. As of now, the accused nursing student has not come forward to clarify the matter. Nong Prue Police raced to the scene in Khao Noi yesterday, November 19 after receiving alarming reports of a woman crying on the road, seemingly intent on harming herself. 9. In a move that’s sure to delight frequent flyers, Thai Airways (THAI) revealed plans to swap its trusty A320s for luxurious wide-bodied aircraft on select domestic routes this December, just in time for the peak holiday season. The airline is ramping up capacity to accommodate the soaring demand during the Christmas-to-new year rush, from December 20 to 31. While official word from THAI’s communications team is still pending, several travel sources, including Nation Online, have confirmed the changes. Starting in early December, Boeing 777s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Airbus A330s will replace the smaller A320s on key domestic routes, including those to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. The upgrades are expected to alleviate pressure on popular routes, particularly from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. On the Krabi route, for instance, the A320 will be swapped out for a Boeing 777-200ER or an A330-300, running daily morning flights throughout December. Additionally, THAI will bolster flights to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai with the deployment of Boeing 787-8s and Airbus A330s from December 20 to 24. Though the airline has been undergoing a fleet restructuring, with potential route shifts and aircraft changes, the details of the December upgrades remain a bit hazy. However, industry insiders confirm that the upgrades will enhance both comfort and capacity during the busy holiday period, offering a more spacious and premium flying experience to passengers heading to Thailand’s most beloved destinations, reported TTR Weekly. The boost in capacity marks a strategic move as THAI prepares for its busiest season yet—so if you’re flying over the holidays, you might just be in for a seat upgrade! 13. In a hopeful boost for the economy, Thailand is witnessing an impressive surge in tourism numbers amidst the ongoing global health crisis. From January to mid-November this year, over 30.5 million foreign tourists have visited, generating a whopping 1.43 trillion baht for local businesses, as reported by the Tourism and Sports Ministry on November 19th. The highest influx of tourist population is credited to China with 5.97 million visitors, followed by Malaysia (4.36 million), India (1.82 million), South Korea (1.6 million), and Russia (1.4 million). The week of November 11 to 17 alone witnessed 747,944 new arrivals, averaging over 106,850 visitors daily, marking a 1.6% rise from the prior week. The swarm of visitors, particularly from China, Japan, and South Korea, is thought to be attracted by the iconic Loy Krathong festival, held on November 15. Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong stated, "Arrivals from these markets rose by 4.53% compared to the previous week.” With an expected rise in long-haul visitors from Europe accompanying the high season, airlines are increasing seating capacity by 10% since July, a trend likely to continue until the end of the year. Simultaneously, eased visa regulations and improved land-entry procedures are expected to help achieve the nation's ambitious goal of drawing 36.7 million foreign tourists by year-end, inching closer to the record-hitting 40 million in 2019. Known for its stunning landscapes and cultural richness, Thailand continues to tantalise global nomads. The touristic rebound signals a bright outlook for the 'Land of Smiles', which is poised to reclaim its spot as a top global destination. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-20

  15. Frustrated residents of South Pattaya have had enough of the endless construction chaos on the infamous shortcut road on Thep Prasit Soi 7. After years of delays and mounting complaints, city council members Nikom Saengkaew and Prasatporn Deeden finally stepped in on November 16 to address the issue. The unfinished road, meant to link Thep Prasit Soi 7 to Soi 9 and Soi 17, has been a community headache for years. Locals, including a vocal resident known as Lung Nieng, expressed their outrage over the lack of progress and the absence of street lighting, which makes the route perilous, particularly at night. “It’s a nightmare trying to navigate this road.” Acknowledging the severity of the situation, the city council members confronted the contractor, demanding swift action. While the project’s final concrete work remains incomplete, the contractor promised an immediate fix: temporary concrete panels will be installed to smooth out the road and make it safer for vehicles. “The temporary improvements will be done without delay.” This long-awaited response is a glimmer of hope for weary residents who rely on the shortcut. However, many remain sceptical, given the project’s prolonged timeline. Until the lights are finally switched on and the last pothole is filled, the community will be keeping a close eye on progress. For now, residents are cautiously optimistic that this long-standing inconvenience will finally be resolved, bringing some much-needed relief to South Pattaya’s roads, reported Pattaya Mail. 17. A TikTok user discovered an unusually high electricity bill for an elderly couple who used only a single fan. The bill amounted to 500 baht, raising suspicions among social media users about potential electrical issues or misuse. TikTok user @bank_waiyaphat, who works as an electricity bill distributor, posted a video highlighting the anomaly in the electricity usage of a home inhabited by an elderly couple. Despite only using a single fan, their bill soared to 500 baht. The video shows the TikTok user discussing the matter with the elderly homeowner, although communication was challenging due to her hearing difficulties. Assistance from neighbours was necessary to facilitate the conversation and understand the situation. The perplexity stemmed from the fact that the household only operated a fan, suggesting that the bill should not have reached such a high amount. This sparked a wave of online discussions, with many netizens expressing their doubts. Several suggested possibilities, such as someone possibly siphoning electricity from the couple’s home or an electrical leakage. There were calls for the TikTok user to investigate further, to which he agreed. One comment compared the situation with another household’s experience: “My parents live in a rural area with a fan, fridge, and TV, and their bill is only about 400 baht. I pay for their bills from Bangkok, so why is this grandmother’s bill so high?” Some netizens were willing to help alleviate the couple’s financial burden by offering to pay the electricity bill. However, the TikTok user clarified in a comment that the woman’s son, who works in the southern region, had already covered the payment. Despite this, the underlying cause of the exorbitant bill remained unaddressed. Additionally, the TikTok user received commendations for his diligence in spotting the irregularity and his proactive approach to assisting the elderly couple. “Well done to you for noticing the problem and stepping in to help rather than ignoring it,” one commenter remarked. The incident drew attention to the broader issue of electricity billing discrepancies and the challenges faced by elderly individuals living alone, reported KhaoSod. 19. A Buddhist monk in Suphan Buri province has been defrocked following allegations of involvement in a fraudulent scheme with a spirit medium, deceiving a family out of 400,000 baht. Dr Phra Maha Praipai Nontkaew, the head monk of Suphan Buri province, explained on social media that the case emerged when Gun Jompalang, a well-known influencer, assisted the affected family in seeking justice. The family reported being conned by a monk and a spirit medium, which led to significant financial loss. This incident occurred at Phukhao Din Temple, Sarakaw subdistrict, Mueang district, Suphan Buri province. The legal proceedings against the monk started in June last year when the police decided to prosecute. The case has now been handed over to the prosecutor for further action. The monk is charged with fraud in collaboration with another suspect, identified as a fortune teller. The monk, known for tattooing sacred symbols, allegedly allowed the fortune teller to perform various rituals in his quarters regularly. The fortune teller reportedly conducted these activities elsewhere, charging the victims substantial fees for these rituals. The fortune teller is also facing charges of sexual assault. Although the monk is not directly linked to these allegations, his involvement in inappropriate activities has led to criminal charges. Consequently, the decision was made to defrock him. The defrocking ceremony occurred at 3pm yesterday, November 19, at the temple, officiated by the district head monk and the abbot. The monk, Chase, has since left the temple. The head monk of Suphan Buri, Dr Phra Maha Praipai Nontkaew, expressed his commitment to addressing such issues and maintaining the sanctity of the monastic community. He acknowledged the gravity of the accusations and reiterated the necessity for accountability and transparency within the temple administration, reported KhaoSod. “The temple is a place of worship and spiritual refuge. Such actions are unacceptable and undermine the trust placed in religious figures.” The police continue to investigate the matter to ensure justice is served. 21. In the early hours of today, troops from the Ratchamanu Special Task Force made a significant bust, apprehending nine illegal immigrants at the Thai border. Among their possessions, the task force discovered 14 methamphetamine pills, prompting immediate legal action. This operation took place in the area surrounding Ban Phop Phra Sai Ngam in Phop Phra district, Tak province, a known hotspot for illegal crossings from Myanmar. It forms part of a beefed-up strategy directed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, General Phana Khlaewplodthuk. His ambition is clear: to crack down on illegal crossings and tighten border security. The Ratchamanu Special Task Force includes the 421st Infantry Company who were responsible for today's operation. Their patrol intercepted a group of individuals attempting to traverse the rugged and challenging terrain between Myanmar and Thailand. Upon identifying themselves as military personnel, the team quickly proceeded to question, identify, and search the group. Among those detained, nine individuals were found to be nationals of Myanmar, with two adult men, five women, and two boys making the crossing through unofficial routes. However, it was during a search of their personal belongings that a more chilling discovery was made. 14 pills of methamphetamine, a Category 1 narcotic, were found in the possession of one of the adult men. Upon the discovery, the entire group was immediately detained and handed over to the Phop Phra Police Station. Further legal proceedings will be held to establish the ramifications of not only their illegal crossing but the possession and intended use of the narcotics found. This latest incident is a stark reminder of the complex challenges facing border security forces. It also further highlights the duty they have to ensure national security and combat against narcotics trafficking. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-20

  25. Phuket, a tourist charm renowned for pristine beaches and bustling nightlife, served as the testing ground for Thailand's innovative method to enhance emergency response - The Cell Broadcast system. The successful trial, held yesterday, marks a milestone in the country’s commitment to elevate public safety through advanced, location-specific warnings for both citizens and tourists. Borne of a collaboration between Thailand's Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), the Cell Broadcast system leverages the Cell Broadcast Service (CBS) to dispatch rapid warning messages in form of traditional text messages or Short Message Service (SMS). Focused initially on disaster-prone areas, the system aims to eliminate delays in alert dissemination, ensuring rapid, concise forewarnings find their way to individuals at risk. Compatible with Android 11 and iOS 10 or newer smartphones, the operation assures the broadest reach possible within smartphone users. Phuket, a favourite getaway for thousands of global tourists, was chosen as the pioneer province for this vital trial due to its exposed geographical location and tourist concentration. The test played out several plausible scenarios, to exhibit the system's capacity in enhancing public security and fortifying trust among residents and tourists alike. This ground-breaking initiative demonstrates the concerted efforts of the government and telecommunications companies to elevate public safety measures. Moving forward, following the Phuket success, the innovated system is slated for selective launch in chosen areas by the second quarter of 2025, with a grand plan for nationwide span in due course. Efforts are currently in motion to extend the coverage to remote regions, ensuring sweeping security for all citizens and tourists across Thailand. This foray into advanced public safety measures forms part of a wider disaster warning system mooted by Phuket's Governor Sophon Suwannarat, following a devastating landslide in August that tragically claimed 13 lives. The collaboration of the Department of Mineral Resources and the NBTC for issuing timely disaster warnings for both flash floods and landslides via mobile phone networks was praised. However, further advancements regarding the Department of Mineral Resources' system to inform the Cell Broadcast of imminent disasters remain undisclosed. The success of the Phuket trial sets a crucial precedent for technological innovation in disaster response, merging public safety with digital capabilities. Such endeavours underscore Thailand’s commitment to its residents and tourists, heralding a new era of enhanced proactive disaster management. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-20
