During April, daily losses from online fraud averaged 110 million baht, a decline of 26% from the 149 million baht figure recorded in March. The reduction is tied to the authorities' escalated fight against online fraud.

On April 1st, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin urged various agencies to demonstrate meaningful results in addressing online fraud within a month. Consequently, the number of online fraud complaints rose to 992 in April from the 855 complaints logged in March.

The increased complaints could be due to the provision of more avenues for fraud victims to report their grievances, according to Prasert Jantararuangthong, Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES).

However, the minister is not completely satisfied with these statistics, pointing out a significant rise in the number of illegal websites being blocked - from 600 in April last year to 16,158 this year.

The ministry is reportedly in talks with Microsoft Thailand management about using an AI-driven system for a more efficient response to online crime. Troublingly, the most severe issue is fraudulent investments in securities, funds, or digital assets via illegal websites and social platforms, which can cause losses of up to 30 to 70 million baht per incident.

Despite the high figures, Prasert claimed that the total loss from fraud is improving compared with last year. The progress report is set to be presented to the Cabinet next week.

Prasert appealed to all institutions to continue strictly enforcing measures against online fraud, illegal websites, dummy SIM cards, and illegal bank accounts. This entails increasing public awareness, minimizing the risk of falling for unlawful investments, and reviewing existing laws or regulations.

Prosecutions for online offenses escalated from a monthly average of 1000 between January and March to 6458 in April. Similarly, prosecutions for online gambling increased from a monthly average of 1200 for January-March to 3757 in April. Prosecutions for illegal bank accounts also jumped from a monthly average of 120 in the first quarter to 361 in April.

Different agencies have taken actions to suspend illegal bank accounts in recent months: Bank of Thailand and the Thai Bankers’ Association have frozen 300,000 accounts, the ministry has frozen 112,699 accounts, and the Anti-Money Laundering Office has frozen 318,298 accounts.

According to Prasert, the rise in both prosecutions and account suspensions is a testament to the effective collaboration among the parties involved. He encouraged all agencies to report suspected illegal activities such as dummy accounts, illegal SIMs, and URLs linked to gambling sites to the Online Scam Operation Centre.

In Lampang, temperatures have crossed an intolerable 40 degrees Celsius. This is causing distress to the 400 stray dogs taking refuge at Wat Weluwanaram. The temple’s abbot, Vichai Akkadecho, has stepped in to alleviate their suffering, given that the heatwave has lasted close to a month.

Based in Mae Tha District, Lampang province, on 389 Moo 8, Lampang-Denchai Road, the temple has assigned workers to tend to the dogs. The shelter is regularly cleaned, and measures have been taken to increase humidity, like daily water spraying on dog beds and surroundings. This helps, to a degree, reduce the unbearable daytime heat.

The temple has also installed fans inside the shelters to keep the air moving and dilute the stifling heat. Added to this, there are water pools and large bowls where dogs can play and get respite from the heat. The dogs who are more docile and are allowed to move around freely, often dig into the ground or take rest under the shade of trees near watering points to keep cool.

Although the temple has managed to extract groundwater for easing the heat, there are persistent issues. The water pump often stops functioning during daytime owing to low voltage. The solution is to store nighttime pumped water for the dogs to use during the day.

While most dogs under the temple’s care are in fair health, there are indications of some suffering due to the heat, like nosebleeds. The temple, however, is equipped to immediately deal with such symptoms to avoid any fatalities.

Sadly, some stray dogs, out of 40 to 50 brought each month by their owners, don't survive, possibly due to the fierce heatwave.

A charitable fund is set up to assist the stray dogs and cats sheltering at the temple. A donation as small as 19 baht can contribute towards their food and other essentials. People can make donations to this account at Kasikorn Bank, with account number 163-1-25882-0. It's important to verify the account name to avoid fraud.

Even under extreme weather, Wat Weluwanaram Temple is dedicated to ensuring the welfare of these animals. Support from the community in the form of donations greatly helps improve the lives of these strays, offering much needed assistance and comfort.

A fatal car accident in Thailand was unexpectedly broadcasted live when a pickup driver was livestreaming his journey on April 30. The driver's identity has not yet been disclosed. He lost control of his vehicle when a tire suddenly burst, resulting in his death at the crash site. The man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.

Footage from the livestream revealed that he was singing and appeared drowsy moments before the accident. His unsuccessful struggle to regain control was caught on camera, displaying the collision with a roadside, his items getting scattered, and the eventual stop of the vehicle at a lamppost.

The authorities were alerted to the crash by a friend who had been watching the live video. Despite this, they couldn't save the driver. The online video was widely shared, with many expressing mourns for him and his family, while others used the incident to emphasize the importance of safety in driving.

Remembering a near-death experience, one user noted they had survived a similar incident due to wearing a seatbelt. Despite a recent law enforcement in Thailand that orders seatbelt use for all vehicle occupants, with a fine of up to 2,000 baht for non-compliance, a lot of locals opt to ignore it.

In September last year, another crash underscored the importance of seatbelts and child car seats. In this case, a truck collided with a sedan, and a nine-month-old baby was ejected out of the car's windshield as there was no child car seat. Fortunately, the baby survived the incident.

A heated argument in Bangkok ended with a police officer being violently attacked, suffering severe head injuries after his efforts to calm the situation failed. The officer was hit on the head with a bread knife in what can be described as a fit of blind rage.

This incident occurred near a gas station on Krung Kasem Road in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district. A 43-year-old man, Apivat, argued with a group of homeless individuals before attacking Police Lieutenant Pongsarat Prawakho. Pongsarat is a traffic control officer with the Expressway 1 Traffic Control Center, and Apivat struck him with a large bread knife.

Pongsarat ended up with three serious head injuries.

At 9.30 am the following day, officers from the Plubplachai 2 Police Station took Apivat into custody. He was brought back to the crime scene to recreate his actions as part of his confession, before legal proceedings began.

During the reenactment, Apivat claimed that he was in a fight with a group of homeless individuals who wanted to damage his vehicle. This caused people nearby to call Lieutenant Pongsarat for help.

After leaving the argument and heading towards the gas station, Apivat noticed a bread knife at a noodle vendor’s dishwashing area. Still angry, he picked up the knife to attack his earlier adversaries. According to Apivat, Lieutenant Pongsarat got in his way and ended up being hit with the knife unintentionally, since Apivat was lashing out without looking at whom he was hitting.

Apivat has stated that he didn't realize he was attacking a police officer at the time.

This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of street confrontations and the risks that law enforcement officers face daily. The police’s quick response in containing the assailant is praiseworthy, given the chaos and danger involved in controlling the situation.

This incident has highlighted Lt. Pongsarat’s dedication to his duty, even in the face of injury, earning him immense respect.

As the case enters the legal phase, further investigations and legal proceedings will occur. The local community has been left deeply disturbed by the violent attack and the severe injuries the police officer sustained. This incident is a strong reminder of the need for constant vigilance and the chance for conflicts to escalate in urban areas.

The extreme heat has warped the railway tracks in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, according to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). This has caused temporary pauses in train services to enable the tracks to cool down and return to normal operations.

Pictures and reports on social media show that the railroad tracks between Ron Pibul Station and Khao Chum Thong Junction were distorted on April 30. The abnormal heat has caused the concrete sleepers, which uphold the tracks, to expand and become stressed, leading to the tracks becoming misaligned.

The SRT's Engineering Division has responded to the situation by spraying the tracks with water and ice to cool them down, a process that took about an hour. After cooling, the tracks have returned to their normal state. Alongside this, inspections of the entire railroad line took place, and additional stones were used on the railway bed to ensure the tracks remain stable and safe.

However, in hot weather conditions, it's common for the steel tracks to expand. To combat this, the SRT's engineering team regularly checks the condition of the tracks.

Health officials have raised concerns over the growing popularity of drinks containing kratom, a plant compound. They warned that these drinks could have dangerous amounts of mitragynine, a substance found in kratom.

In March, the Department of Medical Sciences found that all 52 samples of drinks mixed with kratom contained mitragynine ranging from 22 to 352.6 milligrams per litre, averaging 109.5 milligrams per litre. These levels are above the Food and Drug Administration's recommended daily limit of 0.2 milligrams.

The Head of the Health Department, Yongyot Thammawut, said that mitragynine, a compound found in kratom plants, can stimulate the nervous system, reduce pain and raise energy levels. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is used to reduce stress. However, experts warn that taking kratom in high amounts over a long period can lead to intoxication, addiction and potential health risks, including overdose.

Yongyot has advised people to be careful when mixing kratom with other substances, as there is insufficient information about its toxicity. Despite the removal of kratom from the narcotics list in 2021, allowing it to be grown for therapeutic uses, it is still illegal to mix it with other brain-altering substances.

Police have arrested a team involved in illegal wildlife trafficking from Indonesia to Thailand, confiscating 48 lemurs and over 1,000 radiated tortoises.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Watcharin Phusit, head of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division, disclosed that they were tipped off about a suspicious group smuggling wildlife from Aceh on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, through the Thai province of Satun, to Bangkok.

In response, the Thai authorities partnered with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to track down and halt the group of four vehicles at a hotel in the Muang District, Chumphon Province.

Upon checking the vehicles, they found seven people, including four men and three women. These individuals had the smuggled animals, including the 48 lemurs and 1,076 radiated tortoises, caged in their possession.

The authorities are widening their investigation and intending to bring charges against everyone involved in the trafficking operation. The charges could include possession of protected wildlife without consent, helping in the transport of wildlife, and aiding in smuggling wildlife into the kingdom to avoid customs duties. All the suspects, however, have rejected the allegations.

A fire broke out yesterday evening in a warehouse storing hazardous chemicals and industrial waste in Ayutthaya's Phachi district. As a result, patients from the local hospital and residents in the area had to be evacuated.

During the fire, frequent explosions were heard and thick black smoke was seen billowing up into the sky from Phachi sub-district's Village 2. Local authorities in Phachi recommended that locals stay outside and wear face masks.

The Governor of Ayutthaya directed the relocation of roughly 40 in-patients from Phachi Hospital to other medical facilities in the province. Fire trucks fitted with chemical foam and firefighters trained in handling chemical fires were deployed from Suphan Buri to help contain the fire.

Dr. Opart Karnkawinpong, the Secretary of Public Health, mentioned that an emergency center had been established by the Ayutthaya provincial health office. The center will assist patients dealing with chemical smoke inhalation or burns from the chemical fire. However, no injuries have been reported thus far.

Jullapong Thaveesri, Director-General of the Industrial Works Department, highlighted that another warehouse close by houses around 3,000 tons of chemicals, solvents, and industrial waste. He stressed on the importance of preventing the fire from reaching that warehouse.

The Director General of the Industrial Works Department, Jullapong Thaveesri, unexpectedly announced his resignation during a parliamentary meeting of the House Industrial Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

Jullapong was attending the meeting to discuss the illegal transporting of cadmium slag from a landfill in Tak province to locations in Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri. He was also summoned to elaborate on the recent fire incident at a warehouse owned by Win Process, an industrial waste recycling facility in Rayong province.

After giving his account on both issues, Jullapong shocked attendees, including the committee chairman Akaradej Wongpitakroj, by revealing that he had resigned from his role as he no longer felt capable of handling these incidents. He had already submitted his resignation to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Industry.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had earlier criticized Jullapong during a visit to Rayong following the fire at the Win Process plant. Industry Minister Pimpatra Wichaikul had also expressed displeasure with the department's response to chemical leaks from another waste treatment facility, the Aek Uthai Company in Uthai district of Ayutthaya.

There were unconfirmed reports that Pimpatra had intended to ask the cabinet to shift Jullapong to a deputy permanent secretary or inspector-general role. Jullapong was scheduled to retire at the end of September this year.
