Amidst rising concerns about school practices in Thailand, allegations of misconduct at two educational institutions in Chachoengsao and Nakhon Ratchasima have prompted investigations by the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC). The schools were scrutinised following claims of spoiled food distribution and excessive donation solicitation. In Chachoengsao, it was alleged that a school served spoiled fruit to students. However, OBEC’s thorough investigation found no supporting evidence. Students reported they received adequate, safe meals daily. As a result, OBEC dismissed the claims as baseless. Meanwhile, in Nakhon Ratchasima, the spotlight was on Chumphuangsuksa School due to concerns over donation demands for a school van. An investigation confirmed that donations were collected but clarified that these were voluntary contributions towards general school development, rather than for a specific vehicle purchase. Last week's speculation on social media suggested undue pressure on parents to contribute via multiple donation envelopes. The school's director explained that the envelopes were part of a broader community fundraising effort linked to an upcoming event, rather than an obligation. Following the inquiry, officials instructed the school to halt all solicitation activities and to communicate clearly with parents. The National Anti-Corruption Commission continues examining the donation process, aiming to ensure transparency. The controversy highlights the delicate balance schools must maintain in managing funds and the scrutiny they face in upholding parents' trust. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-08

Phuket may soon get a new travel experience in the form of seaplanes, as potential plans to launch seaplane services on the island were discussed at a recent high-profile meeting. Held at the Phuket Provincial Hall, the meeting aimed to assess the feasibility of introducing temporary water-based zones for seaplane take-offs and landings. The initiative, spearheaded by Siam Seaplane Co Ltd CEO Worakan Siripidech, brings both excitement and a touch of scepticism. Key figures, including Phuket Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai and representatives from various government departments and stakeholders such as the Phuket Flight Control Centre and local tourism officials, weighed in on this ambitious plan. The seaplane services could significantly elevate Phuket's appeal as a tourist destination but raise pressing concerns over environmental impact and local community disruptions. This latest discussion follows an initial workshop by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand in May, which focused on regulatory and operational frameworks for such services in the country. While local officials recognise the tourism potential, they stress the importance of safeguarding environmental and community interests. Vice Governor Samawit has requested a comprehensive project proposal from Siam Seaplane to ensure all factors are meticulously considered. The company, known for its scenic flights and regional routes, sees Phuket as a potential addition to their offerings, promising exciting prospects for Thailand's tourism—but with careful attention to the island's ecosystem and local life. Thailand's Tourism Tactics: Registration Push & EU Carbon Strategy File photo for reference only Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry is embarking on a crucial mission to get all unregistered hotels properly documented within a year. Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry is embarking on a crucial mission to get all unregistered hotels properly documented within a year. This initiative aims to confront the EU's incoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which will start in 2026. The CBAM introduces rigorous environmental standards that could affect Thailand's tourism unless service providers adhere to these benchmarks. Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong emphasises the urgency in raising awareness among small and often illegal service providers about sustainable practices. Failure to comply with CBAM standards could subject operators to higher tariffs, risking Thailand's competitive edge in global tourism. To tackle this, the ministry is drafting new regulations to integrate these operators into the official system, aided by a special committee for oversight. Sorawong believes that legal registration would entice operators with the promise of government assistance during unforeseen events. Additionally, it addresses tourists’ wariness towards unregistered accommodation. Parallelly, Thailand is positioning itself to host a significant trade event like the World Travel Market (WTM) Asia. Efforts include participation in WTM London 2024, where Thailand’s pavilion garnered an award, boosting its credibility as a top destination. This endeavour could take about two years, but if successful, it would cement Thailand's status in the global tourism landscape. Such initiatives align with Thailand's target of welcoming 40 million foreign tourists by 2025, generating substantial economic benefit. The integration and sustainable shift of its tourist sector, alongside global engagement, are seen as pathways to reinforcing Thailand's tourism stronghold. The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the green light for a new shipment of imported Shine Muscat grapes, weighing in at 6.9 tonnes and valued at 3,053,616.47 baht (approximately US$89,780). The grapes have passed rigorous testing for agricultural chemical residues, confirming their safety for distribution throughout the country. Lertchai, the Deputy Secretary-General of the FDA, highlighted the agency's dedication to stringent monitoring. They ensure consumer safety through comprehensive quality control measures on both domestic and international produce. This safeguards the public from potentially harmful residues in fruits and vegetables. The FDA utilises a meticulous hold-test-release method for importing goods, collecting samples for laboratory analysis within 24 hours. If residue levels exceed safety standards, importation halts and legal actions ensue immediately. Lertchai underscored the importance of importers only sourcing compliant goods and mentioned potential discussions with international partners to bolster safety protocols. To further consumer safety, the FDA is set to intensify random sampling of imports, sending more samples for pesticide analysis. Alongside regulatory efforts, Lertchai encouraged consumers to adopt effective cleaning methods. Recommended options include soaking produce in plain water or using solutions with sodium bicarbonate or salt to remove residues before consumption. These steps aim to ensure the safe enjoyment of fruits and vegetables. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-08

Thailand Rethinks Referendum Rules: Middle Ground Proposal Emerges File photo for reference only Thailand's House of Representatives and the Senate are progressing towards a potential compromise regarding the criteria for holding a referendum to amend the constitution. This development follows discussions by a joint House-Senate committee that convened yesterday. Thailand's House of Representatives and the Senate are progressing towards a potential compromise regarding the criteria for holding a referendum to amend the constitution. This development follows discussions by a joint House-Senate committee that convened yesterday. Currently, the House favours a simple majority of participating voters to approve the constitutional rewrite plan. In contrast, the Senate advocates for a stricter double majority rule. Here, 50% of all registered voters must participate, and 50% of those votes must endorse the changes for approval. Nikorn Chamnong proposed a 'one and a half layer majority' compromise, aiming to reconcile these views. This proposed solution suggests that over half of eligible voters participate, with a simple majority of their votes required for approval. As both sides mull over this proposal, discussions are set to continue on November 20. There, the feasibility of conducting referendums via postal voting will be considered, potentially reducing costs and increasing voter engagement. The cost of a referendum is currently estimated at 3 billion baht (US$88 million). Nikorn noted the attractiveness of the postal vote, citing its convenience. Other political figures, like Senator Phisit Aphiwatthanaphong and Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana of the United Thai Nation Party, have also shown interest in this approach. As ideas and proposals swirl, members remain divided, but there's a collective openness to finding common ground. The path to amending Thailand's constitution may well hinge on this delicate process of negotiation and compromise. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-08

Police arrested a 25 year old Thai woman at a Bangkok hotel for operating a prostitution ring and pimping out three girls aged between 14 and 16. Officers from the Children and Women Protection Sub-division received a tip-off that girls under 18 were being sent to work as party entertainers. In addition to entertaining clients, they were also forced to provide sexual services to interested customers. Undercover officers contacted the procurer, known as “Mo Aom,” via her LINE account “Jt.” They requested three girls and arranged a meeting at a hotel on Soi Somdet Phra Chao Taksin 33 in the Bukkhalo district of Bangkok. The procurer agreed to the booking, charging 1,500 baht per person. At around 11.30pm on Wednesday, November 6, the officers revealed their identities and arrested “Mo Aom,” later identified as 25 year old On-uma. Three young girls, aged 14, 15, and 16, were rescued as victims of the prostitution ring. Each girl stated that they earned 1,000 baht per service, with the remaining 500 baht going to On-uma. The 4,500 baht paid by the officers for the girls served as evidence of the illegal operation. On-uma faces two charges: Section 6 of the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act: Seeking benefit from prostitution involving persons over 15 years of age but under 18 years of age. The penalty is six to 15 years’ imprisonment and a fine of 600,000 to 1.5 million baht. Section 277 of the Criminal Law: Sexually assaulting a minor under 13 years old. The penalty is imprisonment from seven to 20 years and a fine of 140,000 to 400,000 baht, or life imprisonment. By Petch Petpailin Photo via Matichon Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-08

In a dramatic road collision in East Pattaya, a motorcyclist was left seriously injured after a high-speed impact on a car, leading to a horrific ankle wound and multiple abrasions. The Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Centre rushed to the scene near Sukhumvit Soi 83 on the railroad-side road yesterday, November 7, following reports of the crash. When rescue teams arrived, they found the aftermath of the collision: a black Honda Civic with a crumpled front end and a red Honda Scoopy-i motorcycle sprawled nearby. The motorcyclist, 48 year old Lampai lay in agony on the road, her injuries severe. The most shocking was a deep laceration to her left ankle, nearly severing it, along with multiple abrasions across her head and body. Rescue personnel promptly administered first aid before transporting her to a nearby hospital for urgent care. The driver of the Honda Civic, 40 year old Kritima, reported that she was on her way home after refuelling. “I slowed down as I entered the railroad-side road. When suddenly the motorcyclist appeared, speeding towards me and looking down—possibly at a phone or something else.” The collision was swift and brutal. Local police documented the scene and are planning to examine CCTV footage to piece together the details. Both parties are expected to be called in for questioning as part of a thorough investigation, with legal proceedings anticipated, reported Pattaya Mail. A Thai father snapped and attacked his son with an axe in a fit of rage at midnight today after he and his wife suffered years of physical abuse at the hands of the son in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen. Officers from Manchakhiri Police Station received a report of a serious assault at a house in the Manchakhiri area at around 12.10am today, November 8. The officers then visited the scene, accompanied by rescuers from the Kut Khao Sub-district Foundation. Police found a pool of blood near a wooden bench outside the house. The 42 year old Thai man, Nirut Sinpeng, was found with a severe wound to the back of his neck, and rescuers rushed him to Manchakhiri Hospital. Nirut’s father, 64 year old Khamniang Sinpeng, admitted to being the attacker. The assault took place in front of his bedridden wife. Khamniang confessed that he struck his son on the head and the back of his neck with the axe. He claimed that his son had been physically abusing both him and his wife for years and he could no longer endure the assaults. Khamniang went on to explain that he drunk alcohol with his son earlier in the evening, and later the two had a heated argument. His son then grabbed a knife to threaten him, saying he would kill both Khamniang and his wife whenever he wanted. Khamniang said he waited until his son stopped his rampage and had a meal before attacking him. The bloody axe was found at the scene. He added that his neighbours heard the chaos and the screams, so they came to check on him and called the police. Khamniang is charged under Section 297 of the Criminal Law for physically assaulting another person resulting in severe injury to the victim. The penalty is imprisonment from six months and ten years and a fine from 10,000 to 200,000 baht. The condition of Nirut was not disclosed in the report, and officers did not mention whether Nirut would face legal consequences for the domestic violence. A Thai butcher rescued a 10 year old boy who secretly rode his grandmother’s sidecar motorcycle in an attempt to travel 130 kilometres to see his mother in the Isaan province of Buriram. The butcher, whose shop is located on the roadside in the Sam Paniang sub-district in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima, sought help from the sub-district officials after encountering the young boy riding the sidecar motorcycle alone on Highway 207 on November 7. According to a report on Channel 7, the boy stopped at the butcher’s shop to ask for directions to Satuek district in Buriram province. Noticing that the boy was unfamiliar with the community and travelling alone, the butcher reported the situation to the police. The mayor of Sam Paniang sub-district, Warakorn Phuttipongpayam, arrived at the shop to collect the boy. During a conversation, the boy introduced himself as Tle, aged 10. He explained that he left his grandmother’s home in the Dan Khun Thot district of Nakhon Ratchasima to go and see his mother in Buriram. The distance between his grandmother’s home and his mother’s home is over 130 kilometres. Tle admitted he took the sidecar motorcycle without permission and left the house around 6am that day. The boy disclosed that he missed his mother and wanted to live with her. During the last school holiday, his mother picked him up to stay with her in Buriram. However, she had to send him back to his grandmother’s home when school resumed. Saving money for fuel Tle saved 10 baht each day until he had 100 baht. He then took the motorcycle, refuelled it with his savings, and began his journey. Unfamiliar with the route to Buriram, he asked people along the way until he reached the butcher’s shop. Warakorn returned Tle to his grandmother’s home and gave him some money for future travel to Buriram. The mayor also advised Tle not to travel alone on the motorcycle again and offered his support, encouraging Tle to contact him if he ever needed assistance. Tle’s mother, 40 year old Noonoi, later spoke to Channel 7, saying she was shocked to learn her son left home and set off on such a long motorcycle journey to see her. She explained that Tle frequently expressed his desire to be with her. Noonoi revealed that she divorced Tle’s father, who expressed a desire for their son to live with him. However, the boy ended up living with his paternal grandmother. Noonoi said she has continued to care for and visit her son, and always brings him to her home province during school holidays. Noonoi said she felt sorry for her son and said she wanted to fulfil his wish. However, she explained that she would need to discuss his relocation with his grandmother, as Tle often helped her with household chores and assisted in selling vegetables in the community. Thieves broke into a school in Ban Muang, Ban Dung, Udon Thani, causing alarm among staff. A 32 year old teacher, reported the incident to both social media and at Dong Yen Police Station after the headteacher failed to take action, fearing the criminals might strike again. The headteacher summoned the teachers for a meeting to discuss the event. During this meeting, the headteacher reprimanded the teacher, referred to as Teacher A, for posting a video of the break-in on social media and threatened disciplinary action. However, Teacher A stood by her actions, asserting that she and her colleagues were simply trying to protect the school and themselves. This wasn’t the first incident of theft at the school, raising concerns about future threats to their safety. The situation escalated when the headteacher made an inappropriate comment before the meeting, suggesting that if intruders targeted the teacher accommodations, they should remind the assailants to assault before killing. This remark, delivered with laughter, was perceived as a joke, but the female teachers found it neither amusing nor appropriate, reported KhaoSod. Attempts by journalists to interview the school administration were met with refusals, as the leadership declined to provide any information. Meanwhile, the Dong Yen police investigation team successfully apprehended three suspects involved in the break-in. The individuals arrested included 29 year old Anuwat, 20 year old Worachai, and a 16 year old teenager identified under the pseudonym Bee. Artefacts from the ancient Ban Chiang World Heritage Site, which dates back 3,000 years, are set to return to Thailand next week to commemorate the International Day against Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Property. The return of these artefacts signifies a significant step toward preserving Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. The US Embassy in Bangkok, in collaboration with the regional office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Thailand, will host a ceremonial handover on November 14. This event will take place at the Issaravinitchai Royal Hall within the Bangkok National Museum. Attendees will include the US ambassador, Robert Godec, and Rafik Mansour, deputy assistant secretary of the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The valuable artefacts will be formally returned to Thailand’s Culture Minister, Sudawan Wangsuphakitkosol. “This handover underscores the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding cultural heritage.” In a separate but equally significant development, another treasured artefact is set to return to its origins in Phayao province after having been absent for 36 years. This is due to the efforts of Wisut Chainarun, a Pheu Thai Party list MP, who recently announced that the 900 year old bronze Buddha statue, known as Phra Jao Tong, has been recovered. This statue was stolen from Wat Sri Ping Muang in the Wiang Lo subdistrict of Chun district in October 1988. The Phra Jao Tong statue, measuring 128 centimetres in height and 79 centimetres in width, was crafted in the Lanna style by a local artisan. It was illicitly transported and sold overseas, with its last known location being Switzerland. “Locating and returning Phra Jao Tong is a monumental achievement for our local task force.” The statue was successfully brought back to Thailand in August after a meticulous search operation. Now under the vigilant eye of the Fine Arts Department, Phra Jao Tong is displayed at the Bangkok National Museum, ensuring its protection and allowing the public to appreciate this historical masterpiece, reported Bangkok Post. Thai boxer Rodtang Jitmuangnon, famously dubbed “The Iron Man,” found himself at the centre of controversy this week after failing to make weight twice, resulting in the loss of his ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Championship title. Despite this setback, he is still set to take on British Muay Thai champion Jacob Smith at the ONE 169 event, scheduled for tomorrow, November 9, at the renowned Lumpinee Boxing Stadium. During the initial weigh-in, Rodtang recorded a water weight of 0.5 and passed. However, on the second attempt, he registered a water weight of 0.259 and failed. Nevertheless, the match will go ahead, with the weight moving up to 135.5, now classified as overweight. The fight, spanning five rounds, carries high stakes: if Rodtang emerges victorious, the championship will remain vacant, while a win for Smith will see him claiming the coveted title. The champion’s weight mishap sparked widespread commentary among Muay Thai fans, some of whom even directed their remarks towards his wife, prompting Rodtang to respond publicly. In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page, Rodtang addressed his critics, urging them to understand the challenges he faces daily. “You can criticise me all you want for being unprofessional but I invite you to live my life for just one fight and see the effort I put in each day. I would love to show you live how much I endure.” Rodtang expressed his deep desire to retain his championship belt for as long as possible and asked his critics to consider their capabilities before passing judgment. “Before criticising, ask yourself if you could do what I do. I never criticise because I know I couldn’t handle being in someone else’s position.” He hopes that one day his critics will understand his perspective. Rodtang’s post further emphasises his dedication to his family and his country, asserting his love for Muay Thai. He also requested that people refrain from making negative comments about his wife, reported KhaoSod. “Please don’t make disparaging comments about my wife.
