  2. A significant development has arisen as prominent lawyer Pattharpong Supassorn has lodged a formal complaint to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) against Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul and the party Secretary-General Chaichanok Chidchob, alleging land encroachment in Khao Kradong Forest Park, Buriram. The complaint, submitted on August 21, calls for a thorough investigation into a construction project on a 5,083-rai plot owned by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). Pattharapong, also known locally as An Buriram, has accused the Chidchob family of illegally taking land to expand a race circuit and football stadium. Additionally, Anutin is alleged to have been involved in obtaining land within the forest park. "The Department of Lands (DoL) recently completed a survey of all land deeds in the park, revealing the alleged encroachment," Pattharapong highlighted. This survey, concluded last week, purportedly uncovered the encroachment on state-owned land. Such acts would constitute ethical violations if linked to political figures, potentially resulting in lifetime bans from political office. The involvement of Anutin, currently serving as the caretaker deputy prime minister and interior minister, could pose significant risks to his political future. Pattharapong emphasized that the allegations could impact Anutin's chances of re-appointment to key Cabinet positions. The NACC’s impending investigation aims to uncover the extent of the involvement of Anutin and Chaichanok in the alleged land encroachment and the subsequent consequences they might face. 4. In a dramatic political twist, the Thai Sang Thai (TST) Party is preparing to expel Yasothon MP Supaporn Salapsri for repeatedly defying party directives and interacting with rival factions. This decision comes after an ethics panel, chaired by prominent members Khunying Sudarat Keyurapan and Pokin Polakul, found Supaporn guilty of voting against the party’s stance and attending another party's activities without explanation. Supaporn, a relatively new face in politics, was accused of actions that the committee believes could harm the party's reputation and mislead the public. The panel issued a stern warning, noting that her behaviour might create suspicions of secretive deals. Despite being summoned twice to justify her actions, Supaporn chose to remain silent, offering no defence. Consequently, the committee recommended her immediate expulsion for breaching the party's ethical code. This recommendation now awaits approval from discipline chief Pokin Polakul and the party's executive board. In addition to Supaporn, the party is also investigating five other MPs—Thakorn Tanthasit, Chatchawal Paetyathai, Rampoon Tantiwanitchanon, Rang Thurapol, and Adisak Kaewmongkolsap—who are under scrutiny for their recent support of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. This unexpected support has caused a stir within TST ranks, with leader Khunying Sudarat slamming it as a blatant violation of party ethics and policies. However, Thakorn Tanthasit defended the group's actions, claiming the move aimed to resolve a political deadlock and insisting that no covert deals were involved. The situation continues to develop as the party navigates through this period of internal conflict and intrigue. 6. Police are searching for a foreign man and his Thai wife after two Chinese women accused the couple of physically assaulting them outside a shopping mall in Phuket. The Chinese woman named Wu and her daughter named Jang filed a complaint at Wichit Police Station in Phuket on Tuesday, August 20, after an altercation with the foreign man and his Thai wife at the shopping mall. They also provided the police with a video showing part of the argument as evidence. In the video, Wu and Jang were seen attempting to stop the couple from leaving the mall. The Chinese nationals were heard complaining to the couple in both English and Chinese. The couple continued to walk out of the mall, accusing the Chinese women of tearing the man’s shirt while they were pulling it. ThaiRath reported that Wu accidentally bumped into the foreign man while walking in the mall with her daughter and apologised to him. However, the foreign man allegedly responded with vulgar language, prompting Wu and Jang to become angry and try to stop the couple to have the matter addressed by police. During questioning by the police, Jang stated that she pulled the foreign man’s shirt, causing him to kick her in the leg, resulting in a wound and bruise. Her mother, Wu, came to her aid, but the Thai woman allegedly pushed her to the ground. Jang reported that the couple left the mall in a taxi, which she was able to identify by its registration plate, ณข 3373. She then asked her Thai husband to take her to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a medical examination before reporting the incident to the police. Jang’s Thai husband admitted that both parties physically assaulted each other during the incident. He noted that the foreign man should not have reacted rudely, as his mother-in-law already apologised. Police are now searching for the foreign-Thai couple to summon them for questioning. ThaiRath also urged the couple to come forward and share their side of the story. Many Thai netizens commented under the video shared by the Facebook page โหดจัง จังหวัดภูเก็ต (which means “So brutal, Phuket province”), stating that they have often been bumped into by Chinese nationals, who usually walk in groups and block the way for others. 7. Chon Buri restaurant owner finds stones in imported river prawns - video Photo from KhaoSod YouTube video screenshot A restaurant owner in Chon Buri discovered large river prawns stuffed with stones, warning other eateries to be vigilant. 8. A restaurant owner in Chon Buri discovered large river prawns stuffed with stones, warning other eateries to be vigilant. The prawns, imported from a neighbouring country, pose a risk of financial loss in the current economic climate. Pratchaya Prayad, the 37 year old owner of Klang Na Pla Khao restaurant in Nong Tamlueng, Phanthong, Chon Buri, shared a video warning others after finding that some large river prawns were stuffed with stones. Pratchaya explained that he was grilling 1 kilogramme of river prawns for customers when they reported finding stones embedded in the prawn heads. He replaced the prawns and posted a video to alert others. Weighing the stones, he found they were 15 grammes. He typically orders 40 to 50 kilogrammes of river prawns at a time. If each prawn contained stones, it would add nearly 1 kilogramme of weight, leading to significant losses. Although he had encountered small lead pieces before, this was the first time he found large stones. “The prawns come from a neighbouring country, and I usually don’t inspect the prawn heads before serving them. From now on, I’ll check thoroughly and advise other restaurants to do the same. The current economy can’t handle such losses.” Pratchaya’s discovery highlights a concerning issue for restaurants relying on imported seafood. The practice of adding stones to prawns increases their weight, inflating costs for unsuspecting buyers. This deception goes unnoticed until the prawns are prepared and served, potentially causing reputational and financial damage, reported KhaoSod. “The economic situation is already challenging. Incidents like this can further strain businesses. It’s crucial to be more cautious and safeguard against such fraudulent activities.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo from KhaoSod YouTube video screenshot Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-22 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe
  9. 8 South Korean men arrested in Bangkok for call centre scam Photo via Channel 3 Immigration Bureau officers yesterday arrested eight South Korean men at a luxury condominium in Bangkok for using the condo to run a call centre scam, swindling money from fellow South Korean nationals residing in Thailand. 10. Immigration Bureau officers yesterday arrested eight South Korean men at a luxury condominium in Bangkok for using the condo to run a call centre scam, swindling money from fellow South Korean nationals residing in Thailand. Officers received a tip-off from an informant that South Korean nationals used a condominium in Soi Ekkamai 3, in Bangkok’s Wattana district to run the call centre scam. Many South Korean nationals were reportedly seen regularly entering and exiting a condo room on the fourth floor throughout the day. The sign on the room read “Content Factory Korea & Thai.” Officers raided the condo yesterday, August 21, and managed to arrest eight South Korean men who were working in front of computers and making calls to victims. According to the police report, each South Korean man would call a victim, inviting them to invest with a South Korean bank, Hana Partners Investment. The victims would be asked to log into a fake bank website, resulting in the loss of their investment after following the procedures. The eight foreign suspects admitted to their criminal activities. They claimed that they were hired to scam people by speaking to victims over the phone or via social media platforms, tricking them into fraudulent investments. In addition to a monthly salary, they would also earn a share of the money they managed to swindle from victims. Officers seized equipment used in the scam, including 40 monitors, 20 computers, 17 mobile phones, and four tablets. They will coordinate with South Korean officials to conduct further investigations into other suspects involved. The eight South Korean men were initially charged under Sections 8 and 101 of the Emergency Decree on the Management of Foreign Workers: working without a work permit. The penalty is a fine of 5,000 to 50,000 baht, deportation, and a ban on applying for a work permit for two years. They were also found to have entered Thailand illegally and therefore face additional charges under Section 81 of the Immigration Act: entering or staying in the Kingdom of Thailand without permission or with expired permission. The penalty is imprisonment for up to two years and a fine of up to 20,000 baht. 12. Officers from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) arrested three Thai TikTok stars for deceiving victims in a Forex scam, causing a total loss exceeding 6 million baht. The three arrested TikTokers were identified as a 31 year old woman named Apinya, a 43 year old man named Rattawut, and a 41 year old woman named Prapakorn. Various valuables worth approximately 6 million baht were seized from them, including five Louis Vuitton bags, one Dior bag, one Hermès bag, a Hermes belt, a Lotus sports car, BMW cars, and two gold bars. Their arrests followed a complaint from 16 victims in January. The victims reported that Apinya, known as a fitness influencer with over one million followers, invited them to invest in Forex, also known as FX or Foreign Exchange. pinya approached the victims via social media platforms and advertised the investment on the website www.sulfver.com. She falsely claimed that the website was an investment platform based in the United States and promised investors high returns of 84 to 96% per year. When the victims expressed interest, Apinya would send them videos explaining the investment processes via the Zoom application. The other two TikTokers, Rattawut and Prapakorn, also engaged in similar activities. The victims transferred their investment funds to a bank account belonging to a Thai man named Santisuk. Initially, they received the promised returns as advertised by the influencers and the website. However, the payments eventually stopped, and the website was shut down. Upon further investigation, the victims discovered that the company was not registered in either Thailand or any foreign country. The police collected related evidence and later issued arrest warrants for four suspects. Santisuk was the first to be arrested and is currently imprisoned for defrauding the public. He faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both. The remaining suspects were apprehended on Tuesday, August 20. Apinya was arrested at her luxury condominium in the Bang Sue area of Bangkok, Rattawut was detained at his condominium in the Ratchayothin area of Bangkok, and Prapakorn was taken into custody in a village in Nakhon Pathom province. All three suspects admitted to inviting victims to invest in Forex via the Sulfver website but denied scamming them. Further questioning and evidence gathering will be conducted before legal charges are issued against each TikToker. 14. Chiang Mai police arrested a 20 year old Thai dancer and her boyfriend on charges of child prostitution. The woman alleged that dancing did not provide sufficient income, leading her to become a part-time sex worker and recruit other underage dancers into prostitution. Anti-human trafficking organisations ZOE and the Immanuel Foundation reported the child prostitution racket to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau officers, prompting them to investigate the case further. The investigation revealed that 20 year old Jeeranan Pongsungnoen and her 23 year old boyfriend Puttipong Panyala were behind the illegal operation. Police found that Jeeranan and Puttipong advertised sex services on social media platforms, and Jeeranan would send young girls to customers at hotels in the province. Accordingly, police officers posed as customers and arranged to meet the young girls at a love hotel in the Padad sub-district, Mueang district, Chiang Mai yesterday, August 21. The officers paid 12,000 baht for the services. After the meeting, Jeeranan accompanied the girls to the hotel, leading to her arrest. Jeeranan confessed to engaging in child prostitution due to a lack of income. She was working as a dancer for a Thai folk music band, but could not earn enough to cover her expenses. Jeeranan said she turned herself into a party entertainer, offering sex services to clients. She found that the job could provide a high income, so she invited other dancers in the band to join her as sex workers. She said her boyfriend, Puttipong, was sometimes involved in sending girls to the customers. 16. Suvarnabhumi International Airport is pulling out all the stops to ensure its much-anticipated third runway is ready for prime time later this year. With support from the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF), the Bangkok airport conducted extensive trial operations to guarantee the runway’s readiness to handle a significant increase in air traffic. To test every aspect of the new runway, top brass from Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) took part in a full-scale trial. The operation was led by Police General Visanu Prasatthong-osoth, AOT Chairman, and involved other key figures such as ACM Manat Wongwat, AOT Board Member, and Kittipong Kittikachorn, General Manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport. They flew in on the RTAF’s A320 aircraft, departing from Don Mueang Airport and landing on the new third runway at Suvarnabhumi. Kittipong explained that the trial was conducted in two phases. The first phase, scheduled at 8am, involved a landing on the third runway, followed by taxiing and parking tests. The second phase, at 6.30pm, saw the aircraft take off from the same runway after extensive checks on taxiways, lighting, and aircraft tracking systems. The goal was to ensure all systems met aviation safety standards and that environmental impacts were thoroughly assessed. This wasn’t Suvarnabhumi’s first rodeo. A previous trial on August 14, using a RTAF ATR-72, was a success, setting the stage for these more comprehensive tests. The airport also collaborated closely with Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, Thai Airways, and other key stakeholders to ensure the trials went off without a hitch. Once the third runway, stretching 4,000 metres, becomes fully operational, Suvarnabhumi Airport’s capacity will soar, handling up to 94 flights per hour, positioning it as a competitive player on the global stage. With these trials under its belt, Suvarnabhumi is on track to bolster Thailand’s standing as a major aviation hub, in line with the government’s vision for long-term economic growth, reported Kaohoon International. 17. Thailand urged to subsidise public transport with vehicle tax funds Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post The Thailand Consumer Council (TCC) urged the government to subsidise public transport fares using funds sourced from taxes on personal vehicles, land, and windfall profits. This recommendation emerged during the inaugural meeting of the Consumer Council for Public Transportation Users, aimed at developing a safer and fairer public transport system through collaborative guidelines and projects. 18. The Thailand Consumer Council (TCC) urged the government to subsidise public transport fares using funds sourced from taxes on personal vehicles, land, and windfall profits. This recommendation emerged during the inaugural meeting of the Consumer Council for Public Transportation Users, aimed at developing a safer and fairer public transport system through collaborative guidelines and projects. TCC President Boonyeun Siritham highlighted that the development of Thailand’s public transport system has historically excluded consumer input. He criticised the government for prioritising enhancements in Bangkok and its vicinity while neglecting provincial areas. Boonyeun pointed out that development efforts have predominantly focused on road infrastructure supporting personal vehicles, turning the country into a city of cars and motorcycles. Boonyeun argued that the lack of consumer involvement in addressing public transport issues has led to escalating problems. He cited the recent change in bus route numbers as an example, noting it caused more confusion among users rather than improving convenience. TCC Secretary-General Saree Aungsomwang proposed that the government could attract more passengers by lowering public transport fares. The TCC recommended utilising taxes from personal vehicles, land, and windfall profits to subsidise these fares. Additionally, the council urged officials to enhance public transport systems in provincial areas instead of focusing solely on road construction. Saree mentioned that the 34-billion-baht budget originally allocated for a double-deck motorway construction project could be redirected to procure electric buses and improve public transport systems in Bangkok and provincial areas. Bhuntin Noumjerm, a member of the House Committee on Consumer Protection, expressed concern that public transport policy would continue to focus on Bangkok for the next four years due to the long-standing centralisation of power in the capital. Fairer transport system Kongsak Shinkrailat, TCC Assistant Secretary-General of Transport and Vehicles, announced plans to promote the Road for All campaign. This initiative aims to develop a fair transport system by encouraging consumer participation, especially in improving electric train services. The campaign also supports converting old cars to electric vehicles and utilising solar energy. The TCC proposed that the government manage the fiscal budget to alleviate travel expenses, aiming to keep them under 10% of the minimum wage. The council also suggested establishing a fund to support the expansion of public transport services to provincial areas. The proposal included a goal to reduce the use of fossil fuels, which contribute to PM2.5 dust pollution and global warming. The TCC also encouraged the state to support the private sector in providing public transport services, reported Bangkok Post. 20. A recent survey has uncovered a deep-seated distrust among the Thai populace towards their government, with more than 69% of respondents expressing doubts that the government acts in the country’s best interests. Conducted by the Institute of Future Studies for Development (IFD) from August 17 to 20, the survey sampled 1,251 adults nationwide. The findings paint a troubling picture of a political landscape dominated by unseen forces, with a significant majority of Thais convinced that the country’s main political parties are under the thumb of powerful individuals. When asked whether they believed the eight leading political parties in Thailand were controlled by influential figures, the responses were overwhelming. Below are the percentages of those who answered in the affirmative: Pheu Thai Party: 94% Bhumjaithai Party: 92.57% United Thai Nation Party: 85.94% Palang Pracharath Party: 85.83% Chart Thai Pattana Party: 83.38% Democrat Party: 82.20% Prachachart Party: 81.14% People’s Party: 68.07% The survey also explored public perceptions of governmental decision-making. When asked if they believed these decisions were influenced by people in power, 55.94% responded affirmatively, while 35.82% were unsure. Only a meagre 8.24% believed the government operated independently. Perhaps the most damning finding was the public’s lack of confidence in the government’s ability to act in the nation’s best interests. A striking 69.32% of respondents stated they do not trust the government to do what is right for the country, leaving just 30.68% with faith in the current administration, reported The Nation. 22. The World Cat Federation (WCF) recently recognized Thailand's rare Suphalak cat breed. The announcement was made at their General Assembly in Germany. The Association of Registered Cats (ARC), who put forward the Suphalak breed for recognition, says it had to meet certain requirements. This included providing a detailed breed history, unique characteristics, and genetic information. Originating in Thailand, the Suphalak cat is a short-haired creature with a solid copper-brown colour. Its first known mention is in an old set of Thai manuscripts, the Tamra Maew, dating back to 1351-1767 AD. Often confused with the sable-coloured Burmese cat, the Suphalak is exceedingly rare. Before 2013, there was only one known male of this breed, Samsen, kept for breeding at the Thai Cat Preservation Centre in Ampawa, Samut Sakhon. Samsen's owner is Preecha Wattana, a well-known breeder recognized for his work in preserving Thai cats mentioned in Tamra Maew. 2014 saw the establishment of The International Maew Boran Association (TIMBA). This group focuses on studying the genetics behind the Suphalak and searching Thailand for ideal cats for their breeding program. There have been sightings of Suphalak cats at several Thai cat shows, including the WCF Thailand National Show. Preecha expressed his pride and satisfaction at the WCF's acknowledgement after nine years of trying to breed a pure Suphalak. He also noted that other pure-bred Thai cats, including the Wichien Maat, Maew Khao Manee and Korat, have previously gained international recognition. 24. A Bolt food delivery rider in the city of Bangkok recently told a story about a strange order he claims to have delivered to a dead police officer. The 30-year-old deliveryman, Suttinai Khamchuen, shared his unusual and chilling experience on Channel 7, noting the incident took place on Monday, August 19, around 7.30 pm. The order, which consisted of six water bottles and two cups of coffee, was to be delivered to Pakkret Police Station in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. The customer apparently told Suttinai that he was a police officer at the station. However, upon arrival at the station, the officers denied placing any such order. Despite their refusal to accept the delivery, Suttinai left the items outside the station and went away. Later, Suttinai found out from a friend that the officer who supposedly placed the order had died of lung cancer earlier in February. On querying other officers, he learned that he wasn't the first delivery rider to experience this odd incident. A similar occurrence had happened with another food delivery rider previously. Even though Suttinai, who also works as a volunteer rescuer and often comes across death, was startled by this episode, he could not entirely rule out that someone might have been playing a prank on him and other delivery riders. He decided to pay respects to the late officer to ease his mind. It's worth noting that Suttinai is not alone in sharing uncanny experiences. Several other delivery riders, app-based drivers, and taxi drivers have shared their eerie experiences. One notable story is about a cab driver who claimed to have given a ride to two women dressed in black, who disappeared upon reaching Samian Nari Temple in Bangkok's Chatuchak district. These women were thought to have been hit and killed by a train en route to their mother's funeral. File photo for reference only -- 2024-08-21 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
