  1. In a heartfelt gathering at the Pheu Thai headquarters yesterday, 141 MPs celebrated Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on the eve of her 38th birthday. The event served as both a celebration of Paetongtarn and a tribute to her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin. Paetongtarn, who officially turns 38 today, arrived at the party’s Shinawatra 3 Building headquarters, accompanied by the 62-year-old Srettha. The duo was warmly welcomed, with former public health minister and ex-party leader, Cholnan Srikaew, presenting a birthday cake adorned with a picture of Paetongtarn receiving the royal command for her appointment as Thailand’s 31st prime minister. The cake bore the message, “HBD38 & Happy New PM#31.” Cheers and the rendition of the birthday song filled the room, reflecting the camaraderie and festive mood among the MPs. Following the celebrations, the members gathered for their weekly meeting, highlighting the party’s ongoing unity. Pheu Thai Secretary-General Sorawong Thienthong acknowledged Srettha’s tireless efforts over the past two years—one year of campaigning and another year as prime minister. His dedication laid a solid foundation for the party's future endeavours. Paetongtarn, in her speech, conveyed profound gratitude for Srettha’s contributions, highlighting his achievements and dedication. She remarked, “I and other Pheu Thai members never imagined that Srettha would have achieved so much.” Srettha, confirming his unwavering support for Paetongtarn and the party, reinforced his commitment, receiving a standing ovation. The gesture cemented his respected position within the party, leaving a lasting legacy. File photo for reference only -- 2024-08-21 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

General Prawit Faces Ethics Probe After Assaulting Reporter File photo for reference only General Prawit Wongsuwon, the leader of Thailand’s Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), is under fire after being captured on video slapping a reporter during a heated interaction last Friday. 3. General Prawit Wongsuwon, the leader of Thailand’s Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), is under fire after being captured on video slapping a reporter during a heated interaction last Friday. The incident has prompted calls for an ethics inquiry, led by the News Broadcasting Council of Thailand (NBCT) and the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association. The video, revealed by NBCT president Supan Rakchuea, shows a visibly agitated General Prawit resorting to physical aggression when questioned about the recent House election of Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the new prime minister. The confrontation has sparked widespread concern over the treatment of journalists and the ethical standards expected of Thai politicians. “This is not the first time for this kind of behaviour by this politician,” stated Supan. “We are talking about ethics and the mass media doing its duty, which must be protected.” The complaint lodged against Prawit highlights clauses 12 and 13 of the MPs’ code of conduct, emphasising respect and a prohibition on threatening or insulting behaviour. If found guilty, consequences could range from a formal warning to an apology before the House. Supan stressed the necessity for politicians to uphold a basic standard of conduct, suggesting that a simple “no comment” is a more respectful alternative to aggression. Compounding Prawit's troubles, the Palang Pracharath Party faces internal challenges. Party Secretary-General Thamanat Prompow has announced the creation of an independent faction with 29 MPs, signalling widespread dissatisfaction. The rebellion is linked to speculation that Thamanat, a figure with a controversial past, might be excluded from a Cabinet role in the new government. As Thailand’s political landscape navigates these turbulent waters, the incident underscores pressing questions about accountability, the role of the media, and the conduct expected from its leaders. 5. An airport taxi driver stabbed a fellow driver outside a hotel in the Patong neighbourhood of Phuket yesterday after a dispute over passengers. Officers from Patong Police Station investigated the stabbing outside Novotel Vintage Park Resort and arrested the attacker, 55 year old Raphiphan Saelor, at the scene. The injured victim, 40 year old Apinan Boonpha, was rushed to hospital before the police arrived. A witness informed the police that both Raphiphan and Apinan were taxi drivers who serviced passengers travelling from Phuket International Airport to the city centre. They usually parked at the scene of the incident while waiting for passengers. According to the witness, Raphiphan stabbed Apinan in the stomach with a knife nearly 30 centimetres long. Raphiphan initially concealed the knife in a dark blue cloth, so Apinan was unaware of it and unprepared to defend himself. Later, Apinan gave an interview to Khao Phuket while receiving treatment at Patong Hospital. He explained in detail that the stabbing occurred yesterday, August 20, on Ratuthit 200 Years Road near the hotel. Apinan stated that they had argued in an airport taxi drivers’ group chat on the LINE application before the incident took place. Apinan mentioned that Raphiphan did not understand the system and procedures of the airport taxi group, where each driver must pick up passengers only when it is their turn. Raphiphan frequently accused Apinan of stealing his passengers and used vulgar language towards him. Apinan admitted that he also used vulgarities during the conversation on the LINE application. Raphiphan then asked his wife to call him to arrange a meeting, where he immediately stabbed Apinan. Apinan added that the taxi group had expelled Raphiphan following the incident. In the comments section under the news report, few people expressed sympathy for the taxi drivers, criticising them instead for their frequent arguments and other misconduct that continue to make headlines. Some commenters stated that tourists prefer to book transport via ride-hailing applications due to the violent issues among taxi drivers. 7. Violence erupted on the streets of East Pattaya as shocking footage emerged yesterday, showing school kids from a local public school and a rival private school engaging in brutal confrontations. The disturbing scenes, captured on Soi Nern Plub Wan in Nong Prue, reveal students clashing in a series of chaotic brawls. These violent altercations have reportedly occurred at least three times between mid-July and early August. However, the conflict took a terrifying turn last week when a group of middle school students from the public school approached the nearby private school, a mere 300 metres away, armed with a gun. Panic ensued as private school students scattered in fear. Amidst the chaos, an 11 year old girl suffered a fractured arm after tripping while attempting to flee. She was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The situation quickly escalated when students from the private school retaliated, arming themselves with knives and wooden sticks. The attackers were forced to retreat, narrowly avoiding further bloodshed. Locals are alarmed by the increasing frequency of these violent encounters. Videos circulating online, some ominously captioned Challenge Accepted, have only heightened the tension between the two schools. “These fights are becoming so frequent that they almost seem normal but when children as young as 12 or 13 bring guns to settle disputes, something has to change. If school authorities and officials don’t address this as more than a schoolyard brawl, serious harm is inevitable.” Residents are now demanding urgent intervention from both school directors to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of all students involved, reported Pattaya Mail. 9. In a high-stakes bid to hold onto their seat in Phitsanulok’s Constituency 1, the People’s Party (PP) is pulling out all the stops. PP leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut and former MP Padipat Suntiphada hit the campaign trail yesterday, August 20, introducing Natachanon Chanaburanasak as their candidate for the upcoming by-election. The by-election, set for September 15, was announced by the Election Commission (EC) on Monday. Candidates have a narrow window from today to Sunday to register. This election comes after Padipat, once a member of the now-defunct Move Forward Party (MFP), was banned from politics by the Constitutional Court. The court had dissolved the reformist party, accusing it of attempting to overthrow the monarchy by planning to amend the controversial lese majeste law. Following the MFP’s dissolution, 143 MPs swiftly joined the Thinkakhao Party, rebranding it as the People’s Party. Padipat, who had been expelled from the MFP to retain his deputy House speaker position before his ban on August 7, has returned to the front lines to support his former comrades in this critical campaign. Before hitting the streets, Natthaphong, Padipat, and Natachanon visited Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat to pay their respects. The trio then took to the local communities, personally introducing Natachanon to the voters. The campaign ramped up as they rode through the Mueang district on the back of a truck, broadcasting their intentions to contest the by-election. They also met with local business operators to discuss pressing issues and gather proposals for the district’s development. As the evening drew in, the three politicians engaged with voters, rallying support and outlining the party’s vision. Natachanon urged supporters to stand firm. “The People’s Party cannot afford to lose this by-election. Our victory will show that the people will not tolerate unfair treatment and will always rise up to fight.” Natthaphong added that the PP is gearing up for local elections, aiming to secure key provincial administrative positions as they prepare for the ultimate battle in the 2027 General Election, reported The Nation. 11. The Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) has put forward four ex-ministers from Srettha Thavisin's term for roles in the new government headed by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, as stated in a party announcement on Wednesday. These nominations are presently being assessed by the Prime Minister's Secretariat as per the usual screening process. Although the PPRP stressed its constant collaboration with the Pheu Thai Party and restated the solidarity of its 40 MPs in supporting Prime Minister Paetongtarn, the party is experiencing internal conflict as it arranges the formation of the new cabinet. Sources say a schism has formed between groups led by the party's head Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon and its general secretary and acting agriculture minister Capt. Thamanat Prompow. Thamanat alluded on Tuesday that details on the distribution of ministerial slots within the party will be announced today. He was spotted in conversation with Pheu Thai's key figures in a coffee shop this morning to debate the ministerial nominations from his group. Reports suggest that one of Capt. Thammanat's picks, Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, is also one of Gen.Prawit's choices, underscoring the ongoing dispute within the party. In addition, three prominent figures from Thamanat's group have been nominated: Capt. Thamanat himself or his brother Akkara Prompow, who is an MP from Phayao province, Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, and Santi Promphat, or an MP from Santi's team. The continuous conflicts within the PPRP could add challenges to finalizing the cabinet as the Pheu Thai Party contemplates its choices for ministerial appointments. 13. The collapse of the Germany-based travel agency FTI Group has resulted in a total loss of around £4 million (173 million baht) for Thai hotels, a significant rise from the initially projected £2.6 million (111 million baht) in June. According to the Thai Hotels Association (THA), this financial crisis has adversely affected 179 hotels nationwide, mainly in the southern region where the losses are calculated to be nearly £3.3 million (141 million baht). Hotels in Bangkok and the eastern regions have also felt the pinch, with reported losses summing up to about £450,000 (19 million baht) and £200,000 (8.4 million baht) respectively. The hotels, comprising of both local and international chains, have been unable to recover money owed by the FTI Group. Certain facilities, especially those courting European tourists, have suffered losses greater than £236,000 (10 million baht). In response, the THA has reached out to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to seek help from the Tourism and Sports Ministry and the German Embassy. The THA leader has called on the government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to continue promoting active tourism, emphasizing on maintaining the current pace as peak tourist season draws nearer. Despite facing this financial setback, southern hotel occupancy rates are reportedly steady at around 60%, mirroring figures from last year's monsoon season along the Andaman coast. Hotel owners in the southern region are also optimistic that the new government will proceed with the previous administration's transport infrastructure programs, particularly the construction of a new international airport in Phangnga province. They believe this airport is crucial for managing overcrowding at Phuket International Airport, reported The Pattaya News. 15. Test Results for Suspected Severe Monkeypox Case to be Released on Friday A 66-year-old European man, who came to Thailand from Africa on August 14, may have contracted a severe form of Monkeypox called 'Clade 1B'. We expect confirmation on Friday, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC). The DDC's Director General, Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, stated during a news conference that they're waiting for further tests to prove if this is the first case of the severe variant in Thailand. The man, who came from an African country where this variant is active, developed fever and blisters a day after his arrival. He sought medical help and tests were conducted to determine the nature of his sickness. Tests have ruled out the less severe variant of the disease 'Clade 2', leaving a potential diagnosis of 'Clade 1B', based on some unclear results. To be certain, further tests are being carried out. Before the conclusive results, the department is taking precautions by tracing 43 passengers who shared the same flight with him. These individuals, Thais and foreigners alike, will be monitored for 21 days for any symptoms. The department will confirm whether he has the severe 'Clade 1B', which will make him the first in Thailand if he tests positive. The less severe 'Clade 2' variant was noticed in Thailand two years ago with around 800 cases reported so far. Recent reports from the World Health Organisation declared the severe 'Clade 1B' variant a matter of international public health concern. This severe strain, accompanied by a high death rate, is predominant in central and eastern Africa. The less severe 'Clade 2' variant is found in western Africa and has spread to multiple countries, including Thailand, noted Dr. Thongchai. 16. Thailand likely detects a new, more dangerous mpox variant File photo for reference only Thailand announced on Wednesday a probable first case of a new lethal variant of mpox, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has termed a worldwide health crisis. 17. Thailand announced on Wednesday a probable first case of a new lethal variant of mpox, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has termed a worldwide health crisis. The affected person likely carrying the strain is a European visitor who traveled from Africa to Thailand, according to Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, the Chief of Thailand's Disease Control Department. The individual is currently isolated in a hospital while lab tests are being done to identify the strain, thought to be Clade 1. Thongchai confirmed that the patient has mpox, but it's crucial to verify that it's not the Clade 2 variant. He showed certainty that the individual has the Clade 1 variant, but the final lab result is still two days away. Over the past few months, mpox has seen a surge in Africa with outbreaks reported in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Mpox is a virus-caused disease that spreads from infected animals to humans through close physical contact, causing symptoms like fever, muscle pain, and large skin sores similar to boils. Although mpox has been known for decades, a new and more lethal strain known as Clade 1b has recently caused a surge in mpox cases. According to the WHO, the Clade 1b variant results in death in about 3.6% of cases, with children being more susceptible. The virus, previously named monkeypox, was first identified in 1958 within research monkeys in Denmark. The Democratic Republic of Congo reported over 16,000 cases and 500 deaths from mpox this year alone. On August 15, the first case of the Clade 1 variant was confirmed outside Africa in Sweden. 18. 19. Thailand's Foreign Trade Department has initiated an investigation into accusations of aluminium dumping by China. This is due to complaints from local steel manufacturers who argue the surge in aluminium imports is impacting domestic production negatively. Thailand's acting Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai says the investigation is part of a wider strategy to deal with the influx of Chinese goods into the country. A source from the ministry, who chose to remain anonymous, said Phumtham is instructing relevant agencies to put in place policies and measures to protect local industries. The Commerce Ministry is actively pursuing trade remedies, which include antidumping actions, measures to counterbalance duties (countervailing duty measures) and safeguards. These primarily involve higher customs taxes and imposing antidumping duties on steel products imported from numerous countries, such as China, Taiwan, Japan, the European Union, South Korea, and Vietnam. Phumtham, who chairs the Antidumping and Countervailing Committee, has made a provisional positive decision in the investigation of aluminium imports from China. The probe is expected to last nine months. If it verifies dumping, the ministry will impose an anti-dumping tax on these imports for a period of five years, subject to review. According to the Bangkok Post, if dumping continues past the initial five years, these duties could be extended for an additional five years, based on current regulations. Phumtham notes that since 2023, Thailand has implemented anti-dumping taxes in 20 instances, primarily regarding steel products. This was done to protect local operators and lessen the impact of the US-China trade war. "As the trade war continues, local steel operators are worried about Chinese steel products being dumped in Thailand and the wider Southeast Asia region as China looks for other markets to compensate for decreasing steel exports to the US caused by imposed tariffs," said Phumtham. Besides the 20 instances where the anti-dumping tax has already been put in place, the Thai government is considering extending it to cold-reduced carbon steel, china's coiled and uncoiled, and other products like hot-rolled steel sheets, steel tubes, and pipes from China, South Korea, and Taiwan. A secret camera revealed the offender to be a 60-year-old neighbour, who's also a community leader. A Facebook group called "Kamphaeng Phet Complaints" recently shared a video of a man in his sixties entering a house in Kamphaeng Phet city. The footage showed the man making his way into a bedroom, taking a look around and then grabbing two pieces of women's underwear. Following that, he began to perform a lewd act with the items. The video was reported to be recorded at 8:52 am on August 20th according to the timestamp. The recording was supplied by the homeowners who wanted to highlight the risk of having such a person residing nearby. The couple had doubts after repeatedly discovering strange stains on the woman's underwear, resembling semen. To solve the mystery, they installed a concealed camera in the room. Upon watching the recording, they were shocked to find out the perpetrator was their neighbour who also happened to be their kin. The man, who holds a leadership position in the community, was caught 'in the act'. This shocking revelation has the couple worried about the possibility of more incidences in the future. There is no update if the man has stepped down from his role as a community leader or been asked to do so. 23. A parcel delivery man in Thailand is seeking justice after he was physically assaulted by a customer, which led to a broken arm. The attack on the worker happened in the Rayong province, situated in the eastern part of the country. The confrontation almost escalated to his pregnant wife being attacked as well. The delivery man, 26-year-old Songphon, shared a video of the assault on a news Facebook page on August 19. The footage showed his attacker, dressed in a red shirt, striking him with a wooden stick. Songphon revealed that he was working for J&T Express Thailand and he was on his delivery route when he delivered a parcel to his attacker's residence on Sunday, August 18. The assailant, who goes by the name Nong, reportedly shoved Songphon in his chest before hitting him in the arm with a stick. Nong even tried to attack Songphon's wife, who was filming the incident on her phone. As a result of the assault, Songphon suffered a broken arm which required surgery. According to Songphon, Nong seemed to be drunk during the attack. The video footage also showed Nong yelling insults at Songphon and boasting about his connections to the local police. During his interview with Channel 3, Songphon gave further details about the incident. He explained that he had delivered a cash-on-delivery parcel to Nong's residence. However, 75-year-old Kritsana, Nong's aunt, refused to accept the package, arguing that the addressee didn't live at the location. Nong then got involved in the discussion which eventually led to the argument and assault captured in the video. In her interview with the press, Kritsana insisted that Songphon instigated the fight as he was upset that the parcel was not accepted. Meanwhile, Songphon's 21-year-old wife has stated that they plan to press charges as her husband sustained severe injuries from the incident. The couple has filed a complaint with the Phe Police Station. Officers from the station have planned to call in both parties for an inquiry once Songphon's health condition improves. 25. A Thai man, Sairachon Saenkham, who recently started a civil service job found out that his academic credentials were false. In order to keep his position, he has sought legal help from the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Rights Protection. After Sairachon publicly disclosed the issue, he started receiving threats. The case is now heading to court. The 34-year-old man, accompanied by his legal counselor, Piya In-ai, went to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Rights Protection and Legal Assistance at Khon Kaen's provincial office. The visit aimed to secure legal aid and protection after it was discovered that Sairachon's academic documents were not genuine. Piya said that they first consulted Dr. Itthi Siwannu, the license holder of a technology college in Nong Ruea, Khon Kaen. After looking into Sairachon's documents, Dr. Itthi confirmed they were false and advised legal action against all the people involved. Sairachon then reported the issue at the Nong Ruea Police Station. The local law enforcement, in turn, suggested him lodge a formal complaint in Pathum Thani, where the educational institution is based. He contacted the Pratunam Chulalongkorn Police Station in Pathum Thani, but officers there indicated they needed more evidence to take the case forward. Sairachon went back to the Public Prosecutor's Office for more help. Piya pointed out that previous meetings had not led to a direct conversation between Sairachon and Dr. Itthi. The prosecutor has now set up a meeting for the two to discuss the matter. The legal team agrees that Sairachon should be given the right to continue his job and be protected. They will be seeking to take legal action against all the people who took part in the forgery. Piya also mentioned that someone claiming to be a college consultant had contacted him, offered to help Sairachon get a master’s degree, and suggested a financial settlement. Sairachon started receiving threats after media reported his case, with warnings of potential lawsuits for tarnishing the college's image. Sairachon has been receiving threat calls since the news came out and has let his advisor handle all communication. Despite the threats, he remains committed to revealing the truth. He has got support from friends and colleagues, giving him more courage. Sairachon says the problem comes from a group of educators whose actions have jeopardized his job, future, and ability to support his family. The threats have also increased his distress. He has now urged the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, under the Ministry of Education, to investigate the issue closely. Without any official support, Sairachon plans to get justice through the legal system. He fears that if left unchecked, similar cases could happen in the future and affect many more families. He has urged the police to be responsible and offer compensation to the victims of fake educational qualifications.
