A disagreement between two pairs from Myanmar resulted in the tragic death of a woman on Wednesday in the Bang Bir district of the Samut Prakan province. The deceased woman's partner was also grievously injured. Officers from Khlong Dan Police Station responded to a call about a stabbing incident in Soi Rojanakun 3 on the night of July 24. They found the woman, Mi Mi Ae, lying lifelessly in the middle of the road outside the apartment building. She had multiple stab wounds and attempts to resuscitate her failed. Her boyfriend, Sein Pan, was severely hurt and rushed to the hospital; his condition remains unknown. According to Win, their neighbor, the perpetrators were two local men, 29-year-old Ya Sa Kung and 27-year-old Ye Yin. A drunken Ya Sa Kung was arguing loudly with his wife which caused a disturbance. Sein Pan asked them to keep the noise down. This didn't sit well with Ya Sa Kung and another man who then turned their anger onto him. When Mi Mi Ae tried to help her boyfriend, she was repeatedly stabbed by the attackers. Based on witness accounts, the two suspects fled to a neighboring alley. The police and rescuers looked for them for 30 minutes without success. They later used security camera footage to assist in their search. The suspects were detained on July 25 as they stepped out of a taxi in the Tha Kham district of Bangkok. They claimed that the deceased woman had threatened Ye Yin with scissors, forcing them to use the scissors to stab her in self-defense. They added that they had previously had a disagreement with her and Sein Pan about unpaid utility bills, as the couple managed the apartment. Lopburi City Catches Over 150 Monkeys in New Task File photo for reference only Lopburi city has caught more than 150 monkeys in the first two days of a new mission aimed at managing the city's monkey population. Lopburi city has caught more than 150 monkeys in the first two days of a new mission aimed at managing the city's monkey population. The aim is to catch at least 500 monkeys within 10 days, with help from 12 military staff members from the 13th Military Circle. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), together with the Lopburi city administration, launched the mission after building additional cages. The mission is centered on controlling the number of monkeys in the old town area, a busy business district. Military staff members from the 13th Military Circle are helping with various tasks at the Lopburi City Animal Care Centre in Pho Khao Ton, Mueang district, Lopburi province. The task is planned to run for 10 days, as set by the DNP and Lopburi city administration. Four places have been selected for setting up monkey traps: behind the Chaiyawanich building, behind the Agricultural Bank building, in front of the old Public Health and Environment Department building near Manora shopping center, and at the old residence of the municipal waterworks office. Since the mission started, over 150 monkeys have been caught at these four places, and the work continues to meet the target of catching at least 500 monkeys within 10 days. At the Lopburi City Animal Care Centre, DNP officials and soldiers from the 13th Military Circle are working hard to divide the caught monkeys into different groups. The monkeys are then given to the DNP vet team for further steps. "Some of the monkeys we caught include almost 10 mother monkeys with newborns that are still feeding. The DNP will look after these separately, and they will not be placed in the city monkey cages." Relocation Other caught monkeys are given medicine to put them to sleep for health checks, taking blood samples, sterilizing, tattooing and photographing for records before being given new ID cards. They are then kept separately for a day before being moved to the monkey cages at the Lopburi City Animal Care Centre or the close by monkey park the next day. This new monkey-catching mission comes after additional cages were completed at the Lopburi City Animal Care Centre, which can now take in up to 500 more monkeys. The project is part of a plan to control the population aiming to maintain a suitable number of monkeys for the area. This can help lighten the problem faced by local dwellers, students at Phibun Witthayalai School, and tourists around Phra Prang Sam Yot. A man from Thailand, Rung, confessed to killing his friend, Yodrak, because of a dispute over a love interest. Yodrak's body was found dumped in a pond in Nakhon Sawan province. Yodrak's 75-year-old mother, Prayong, reported him missing on July 18 when she was unsure of his whereabouts. She then sought guidance from a fortune teller, who suggested that Yodrak's body might be in a neighborhood pond. Prayong requested assistance from volunteer divers who discovered Yodrak's body on July 25. It was tethered to a cart filled with bricks and stones and was starting to decompose by the time of its discovery. Rung, a 54-year-old friend of Yodrak, emerged as the main suspect after the police interrogated Yodrak's friends. It was found that they were both attracted to the same woman, which led to an argument and conflict between them. Rung confessed to killing Yodrak during an altercation at Yodrak's home. In his confession, he revealed that he assaulted Yodrak with a hard object, killed him, then dumped his body in the pond where it was later found. Rung also revealed that when Yodrak's body floated to the surface of the pond, he repeatedly stabbed it, hoping it would sink. When this did not work, he added heavy objects to weigh the body down. The police took Rung back to the scene to recreate the act on the previous day. He is facing several charges, including intentional murder, which carries a sentence of 15-20 years to life imprisonment or even a death penalty according to Section 288 of the Thai Criminal Law. He's also charged under Section 366/3 of the Criminal Law for tampering with a body, which could result in up to three years in prison, a fine of 60,000 baht, or both. All this may be compounded by reports from Channel 3 and Amarin TV suggesting that Rung struggles with mental health issues, which might have influenced his violent actions. Landslide Alert for Khao Yai National Park File photo for reference only A landslide alert has been issued for Khao Yai National Park following heavy rainfall. A landslide alert has been issued for Khao Yai National Park following heavy rainfall. This has resulted in soil and rocks falling onto Thanarat Road, creating a hazardous situation. Park officials have urged extreme caution, particularly near the waterfall area. The continuous rainfall has triggered a dangerous landslide at Khao Yai National Park. As a result, soil and rocks from heights of over 100 metres have fallen. The park's head, Chaiya Huayhongthong, pointed out that the ongoing rains, along with strong winds, have caused trees to fall onto power lines. This has led to power disruptions and landslides along Thanarat Road. The affected region stretches from the park's shrine gate entrance up to a small waterfall. “The heavy rainfall, more than soil can absorb, has caused multiple landslides with large rocks blocking the road.” A significant landslide occurred near the 26-kilometer mark, creating major obstructions making the road inaccessible. Local officials have sent out personnel and machines to get rid of the debris and make the road passable again. Travelers are at considerable risk; hence, park officials are advising visitors to be very cautious within the affected zones. This advice has become a regular occurrence during the rainy season. Chaiya also added how landslides in this specific area tend to happen every rainy season. This problem is on the agenda for discussion at the advisory committee’s meeting where they will explore long-term preventive measures. However, the area's geography, primarily sandstone mountains, makes finding a solution challenging. The mountains are susceptible to erosion, even more so as they are quite steep. Implementing a permanent solution to the landslide problem would require significant funding, and the planning and surveying phase is currently in progress. Visitors to Khao Yai National Park are urged to remain aware of such warnings issued by park authorities. The natural beauty of the park, while appealing, comes with certain risks that increase during the rainy season. The park officials are doing all they can to ensure visitor safety, but public cooperation is essential. “As we work to find a viable solution to this problem, we need time and resources.” Park management is dedicated to maintaining the safety of visitors to one of Thailand's beloved natural reserves. The advisory committee, along with park management, is looking into different methods to stop future landslides. This includes possible engineering solutions, reforestation projects, and better drainage systems to handle heavy rainfall. The aim is a safer environment for all visitors and wildlife. As the rainy season goes on, the park officials will keep the public up-to-date with regular advisories regarding the current conditions. Those planning to visit Khao Yai National Park should keep abreast of weather conditions and follow any guidelines or restrictions set by park authorities. Swedish Couple Gets Sacred Tattoos in Thailand for Luck and Prosperity File photo for reference only A Swedish pair received sacred tattoos on their hands in a traditional ceremony at the Wat Sawang Arom temple in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, for good fortune and success. A Swedish pair received sacred tattoos on their hands in a traditional ceremony at the Wat Sawang Arom temple in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, for good fortune and success. They also prayed to Thao Wessuwan, a deity known for granting blessings and revealing lucky numbers. The atmosphere was vibrant at the temple, located in the Khun Kaeo area of the Nakhon Chai Si district, as locals and visitors from abroad gathered for the sacred tattoo ceremony. It was led by Phra Khru Yatithammuniyut, the head monk of the temple who is affectionately known as Luang Phor Pae. The aim of the ceremony was to bestow blessings on attendees ahead of an upcoming lottery draw. Luang Phor Pae used pink powder to etch the Open Sky, Open Earth, Open Underworld tattoo on the back of peoples' hands. This deep-rooted custom is believed to offer protection and safety. The monk's spiritual mentors, particularly the venerated hermit Phor Pu Reusi, are believed to provide safeguard to the participants. Joining the ceremony were Thai locals and foreign visitors from Europe and Asia, all keen to receive the tattoos. Among them were 47-year-old Panisara Vanderroid, the proprietor of Like Siam Massage in Phuket, Thailand, alongside her 57-year-old Swedish husband, Chris Vanderroid. Following the tattooing process, Luang Phor Pae conducted a ritual that involved dropping candle wax, and then tying blessed banknotes around the wrists of Panisara and her husband for good luck and prosperity. Panisara mentioned that they traveled from Phuket for the ceremony, spurred by their strong belief in its auspicious benefits. She said they often seek blessings for luck and success, especially for their family business, a Thai massage parlor. In anticipation of good fortune, Panisara disclosed the serial numbers on their blessed banknotes. Her note ended with the digits 354, while Chris's 100-baht note concluded with 325. After the ceremony, the couple showed respect to Thao Wessuwan, the deity of success and wealth, reinforcing their hopes for prosperity in their personal lives and business ventures. Bangkok ordered to pay over 12 billion baht to BTS within 180 days Photo courtesy of KhaoSod The Supreme Administrative Court upheld a ruling requiring Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Krungthep Thanakom Company to pay BTS Group Holdings over 12 billion baht in outstanding debts related to the Green Line extension project within 180 days. The Supreme Administrative Court upheld a ruling requiring Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Krungthep Thanakom Company to pay BTS Group Holdings over 12 billion baht in outstanding debts related to the Green Line extension project within 180 days. The Supreme Administrative Court delivered its final verdict at 9am today, July 26, affirming the Central Administrative Court’s decision. The BMA and Krungthep Thanakom Company (KT) must compensate Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTS) for breach of contract concerning the operation and maintenance services of the Green Line extension. The ruling mandates that the payment, including interest, amounting to 11.76 billion baht, be completed within 180 days from the finalisation of the case. The case revolves around the BMA’s Green Line extension project, which includes two segments: the first extension from Saphan Taksin to Bang Wa and from On Nut to Bearing, and the second extension from Mo Chit to Khu Khot and from Bearing to Samut Prakan. The court ordered the repayment due to BMA’s failure to adhere to the contractual obligations for compensation for operation and maintenance services provided by BTS. The ruling specifies that the BMA, having appointed Krungthep Thanakom, a company in which BMA holds a 99.98% stake, for the project to ensure operational flexibility, must also bear responsibility for the unpaid debts. “Since Krungthep Thanakom has outstanding debts under the contract for the operation and maintenance services of the Green Line extension, BMA is jointly liable to settle these debts to BTS.” The breakdown of the debt includes 2.35 billion baht for the first extension, with accrued interest of 2.2 billion baht. For the second extension, the debt amounts to 9.4 billion baht, accompanied by interest of 8.79 billion baht. The interest is calculated based on the Minimum Lending Rate (MLR) announced by Krung Thai Bank Public Company Limited, from the date the lawsuit was filed until the payment is fully made, reported KhaoSod. “The court has concluded that BMA’s actions in managing the Green Line extension projects and delegating Krungthep Thanakom to handle operations require them to jointly cover the unpaid debts to BTS.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-07-26 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Thai cyber police arrested the owner of two major online gambling networks, seizing assets worth 190 million baht. The websites reportedly used cartoon profile pictures to attract young gamblers. Police disclosed that the networks generated over 480 million baht annually. The Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) in Mueang Thong Thani announced the crackdown, which targeted the websites kingpigs1.com and duckystars.com. During the operation, police seized luxury cars, 7.9 million baht in cash, and land deeds in Phuket, Phang Nga, Songkhla, and Krabi, totalling over 190 million baht in assets. Police General Worawat Watnakornbancha of the TCSD, along with other high-ranking officials, shared that the two gambling networks were managed by a single owner who had been operating for over five years. The networks had a combined membership of over 50,000 users, generating annual transactions exceeding 480 million baht. “The investigation revealed that both networks were owned by the same three individuals who acted as financiers, delegating the management of the websites, finances, and mule accounts to staff.” Further investigations uncovered the networks’ use of football betting and other forms of gambling accessible to the general public. Police gathered evidence and obtained arrest warrants for 13 individuals involved in the operations, including three owners, one manager, and nine employees and mule account holders. The court also issued search warrants for four targeted locations, leading to the arrest of four suspects, including the owners and the manager. Police Colonel Surapong Thaiprasert elaborated on the tactics used by the gambling networks to attract youth. The websites featured cartoon images to lure young gamblers. If a young gambler lacked a bank account, administrators would coax them into registering their parents’ bank or credit card details. In some cases, youths were manipulated into sending explicit images or opening ghost SIM accounts under the pretence of receiving their gambling winnings. “Parents should be vigilant and monitor their children’s behaviour online.” Police Major General Srayu Klinhom, Deputy Director of News Analysis and Special Tools at TCSD confirmed that the arrested suspects confessed during interrogation. They will be charged with organising illegal electronic gambling and money laundering. Police are pursuing the remaining nine suspects who have been identified and have active arrest warrants, reported KhaoSod. Mae Sot Hospital, on the edge of the Thailand-Myanmar border in Tak province, issued a stark warning about a looming tuberculosis (TB) outbreak. Mae Sot Hospital Director Dr Rames Wongwilairat urged health and immigration officials in Mae Sot to stay vigilant. He emphasised the need for personnel in close contact with Myanmar migrants to wear face masks as a preventive measure. Dr Rames highlighted alarming findings from recent X-ray tests conducted in Shwe Kokko, a town in Myawaddy Township. Out of 100 patient samples, a shocking 50 tested positive for TB, a highly infectious respiratory disease. While urging caution, Dr Rames reassured the public not to panic. “Myanmar reports TB infections annually, particularly among Chinese communities.” He added that this year’s TB patient numbers could slightly surpass last year’s figures. “We are delving into the specifics of the 100 samples, examining their residential areas and risk factors, to get a clearer picture of the situation in Myanmar. However, it is premature to confirm an outbreak.” Dr Rames advised that the public should stay calm but vigilant, adhering to preventive measures against TB, reported The Nation. “Monitor your symptoms closely. Seek medical testing if you experience chronic coughing for more than two weeks, weight loss, fatigue, prolonged fever, or if you have been in direct contact with TB patients.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of The Nation Full story: The Thaiger 2024-07-26 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Hours before the much-anticipated opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, French rail company SNCF revealed that its high-speed network has been deliberately targeted by malicious acts intended to cripple the system. Several high-speed TGV lines to the west, north, and east of Paris have been hit, leading to significant queues at Montparnasse station, which serves destinations to the west of the capital. Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete has strongly condemned these acts, emphasising the disruption to holiday plans. Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra described the attacks as “downright appalling.” “The impact on public and Olympic athletes is currently being assessed.” With over 300,000 spectators expected in Paris for Friday’s opening ceremony, which features thousands of Olympic athletes sailing down the River Seine, the timing could not be worse. SNCF has reported fires set to damage its facilities, with sources close to the investigation confirming to AFP news agency that the incidents involved sabotage. While no group has claimed responsibility, the coordinated nature of the attacks has raised significant concern. The disruption has led to numerous train cancellations, with SNCF warning that the chaos could last at least all weekend while repairs are conducted. Some high-speed services have been diverted onto other lines, creating a ripple effect that is impacting additional services. As the city braces for the Olympic spectacle, the focus now shifts to repairing the damage and ensuring the safe transport of spectators and athletes, reported BBC News. Thai beauty queen sparks online drama over airline seat Photo courtesy of KhaoSod A misunderstanding involving Thai beauty queen Nampech Teeyapa and renowned YouTuber Spin9 has sparked significant online drama. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1333918-thai-beauty-queen-sparks-online-drama-over-airline-seat/ -
A misunderstanding involving Thai beauty queen Nampech Teeyapa and renowned YouTuber Spin9 has sparked significant online drama. Nampech criticised an airline for providing a lower-grade seat than she expected despite paying nearly 400,000 baht, which she believed would secure her a Qsuite seat. However, her ticket was for a standard business class seat on a Boeing 777-300ER, which does not feature Qsuite or Premium Economy seating as she had thought. The beauty queen’s initial outrage appeared to be directed solely at the airline but the situation escalated when she tagged Spin9, a popular tech and travel reviewer, in an Instagram story. In her post, she accused Spin9 of misleading content and seeking engagement at her expense. “When booking tickets, it clearly states which flights have Qsuite and which don’t, with different prices. Who is really at fault here, Spin9? Don’t just make your content famous at the expense of others. You benefit from free reviews, but others are genuinely affected. Don’t add to their troubles.” Nampech mistakenly believed that Spin9’s content had referenced her specific issue with the airline, but Spin9’s video had been created three months earlier. This was clarified by Spin9’s wife, Suching, who responded on social media. “Nampech, have you misunderstood something? Spin9 has never mentioned or known you before being tagged today. The website that wrote about you referenced Spin9’s earlier review. Please read carefully and post a new story to apologise.” Realising her mistake, Nampech later apologised via her Instagram story, stating that she had resolved the misunderstanding with Spin9. She acknowledged that Spin9 had not created any content about her but maintained that her confusion was understandable. She urged everyone to avoid further drama and mentioned her willingness to take legal action if necessary. Despite Nampech’s attempts to settle the matter, social media users continued to discuss her actions. Many criticised her for not fully grasping her mistake and dragging an unrelated party into the dispute. While she expressed a desire to move past the issue, her comments about seeking benefits and readiness to go to court kept the conversation going, reported KhaoSod. The 28 year old masseuse escaped from the attempted rape and sought help from motorists on a road in the Hat Yai district of Songkhla. She then reported the crime to officers at the Tung Lung Police Station and recounted details of the incident. The masseuse explained that the suspect, later identified as 20 year old Teeraphat, contacted her via the LINE application and hired her to provide a massage service at a resort near the scene of the incident, offering a service fee of 2,000 baht. While travelling to the resort, Teeraphat claimed that he needed to go to the toilet and turned his motorcycle into a rubber plantation by the roadside. Teeraphat allegedly threw her to the ground and tried to rape her. She asked him to stop because she was menstruating but he ignored her. Teeraphat eventually stopped after he stripped her and found that she was indeed on period. He then demanded valuables from her but she only had her mobile phone. She let him take her phone and fled from the scene to seek help from motorists on the road. Police arrested Teeraphat yesterday, July 25, at his home in the Namom district of Songkhla. Teeraphat admitted to the attempted rape, saying he could not have sex with his wife because she is pregnant. He claimed that he hired her for 2,000 baht for both a massage and sex but this contradicted his attempted rape. Teeraphat insisted that he only stole her mobile phone and did not sexually assault her because her menstruation left him with no desire. DailyNews reported that police have issued legal charges against Teeraphat but the details of the charges were not included in the report. Durian farmers in Yala are facing severe financial hardship due to plummeting prices, with farm-gate prices ranging from 55 to 80 baht per kilogramme. Farmers are appealing for assistance to raise the prices to at least 100 baht per kilogramme. The issue arose after China rejected four shipments of durians, totalling approximately 17,000 kilogrammes, citing the presence of caterpillars. Investigations revealed that these durians originated from the central southern region of Thailand, not from the three southern border provinces, including Yala. Yala Governor Ampol Phongsuwan emphasised the high quality of Yala’s durians, known for their delicious, sweet, and rich flavour. He assured that the province has stringent measures in place to prevent caterpillar infestations from the flowering stage, utilising innovative agricultural techniques such as light to deter caterpillars. “I can guarantee the quality of Yala durians. The first batch for this season was harvested on July 23. The reports of caterpillar infestations in Yala durians are unfounded. We have rigorous checks to ensure only high-quality durians are exported.” Masobri is a local buyer who purchases durians directly from farmers to sell to packing houses in Yala. “Currently, we can buy durians at 55 to 80 baht per kilogramme and sell them to packing houses for 80 to 100 baht per kilogramme. The costs for labour, transport, and other expenses amount to 7 baht per kilogramme, leaving us with a profit of 13 baht per kilogramme. “If the prices at the packing houses were between 120 and 170 baht per kilogramme, farm-gate prices would not fall below 100 baht per kilogramme. Ideally, farm prices should be between 100 and 120 baht per kilogramme. We urgently need support from the authorities.” Bura Heng, a durian farmer in Yala, echoed these concerns, reported KhaoSod. “Today, I sold durians at 80 baht per kilogramme for high-quality ones and 55 baht for smaller ones. It’s really tough. If we could get at least 100 baht per kilogramme, it would be more manageable. “Fertiliser, pesticides, and other farming expenses are high, and we are not making a profit. The current prices are unsustainable, and we are barely making ends meet. “I urge the relevant authorities to address this issue promptly so that we can have some breathing room and not be overwhelmed by the financial burden.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-07-26 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million.
