  1. A construction worker was found dead at a work camp in Chon Buri, leading to the mysterious disappearance of other workers. Police are investigating the incident, which happened last night, June 25, and are baffled by the sudden vanishing of many workers from the scene. The incident occurred at 11.36pm yesterday at a construction site in Takhian Tia, Banglamung District, Chon Buri Province. The Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Centre received a report of a murder at a workers’ camp linked to a local housing project. Upon receiving the report, Police Officer Wongsatorn Makkhanan from Banglamung Police Station and his team quickly arrived at the scene to investigate. At the site of the incident, an unidentified man was found dead on a table. The man had visible wounds to his face and left ear, and the back of his head showed signs of being struck by a hard object. His body was covered in dust and dirt, indicating he had been dead for over an hour. Surrounding the camp, police found only a few workers sleeping in their rooms, while others had fled before the police arrived. Motorcycles were left abandoned, and fans were still running in the rooms. A 51 year old worker, Prida Sophee, reported that while doing laundry, he heard an argument from the opposite camp. Shortly after, he saw a foreign worker in a sarong hiding in the bushes. When questioned about his actions and warned that the police would be called, the worker left. Someone then came out asking for help, saying there was a dead body in front of the camp. Prida discovered the deceased and immediately called the police for assistance. Suwit Thongpan, a rescue officer from Takhian Tia stated that upon receiving the notification, the rescue team rushed to the scene. They confirmed that the injured person had no pulse. Most of the workers had already disappeared by then, leaving only a few rooms occupied. “It was confusing to see the entire camp deserted.” Police investigation The incident has left the police puzzled as to why the group of foreign workers vanished from the camp without waiting for the police to investigate and gather information. There are also questions about whether these foreign workers are legally employed in Thailand. The investigation is ongoing and police are working to uncover the circumstances that led to the worker’s death and the mass disappearance of the other workers. They are also looking into the legal status of the foreign workers involved in the incident, reported KhaoSod. 3. A brawl between foreign tourists erupted in Pattaya yesterday afternoon shocking bystanders in the vicinity. The confrontation, which left one man injured, unfolded in front of stunned locals and visitors near a popular restaurant on South Pattaya Road. The chaos erupted outside a food-to-order restaurant when a group of men began attacking 38 year old Vietnamese national Xuan Hai Ngo in broad daylight. A KhaoSod English reporter, passing by, quickly sprang into action, capturing the altercation on video and stepping in to break up the fight. The attackers, upon realising they were being filmed, fled into nearby bushes. Police were promptly called to the scene, managing to apprehend one suspect, who was identified as Vietnamese. However, other members of the group managed to escape into a nearby shopping mall’s parking lot. Xuan, the victim of the assault, revealed the terrifying backstory. He explained that his attackers were his debtors, with whom he had arranged a meeting to settle an outstanding debt. He had been waiting at the restaurant with a friend when the debtors arrived in a Ford car, accompanied by four men. The meeting quickly turned violent; without much conversation, Xuan was put in a headlock and repeatedly punched and kicked, eventually collapsing in the street. “It was a trap. They planned to lure me there to attack me. I am very scared now.” The police searched the debtors’ car and discovered an alarming array of weapons, including knives, metal objects, and wooden sticks, all of which were confiscated for further investigation. Police are intensifying their efforts to track down the remaining suspects and bring the Vietnamese gang to justice, reported KhaoSod English. 7. A recent study has revealed considerable misconceptions among Thai youth about e-cigarettes. Over 60% think that vaping can aid in quitting smoking, and more than half see nicotine as beneficial. The survey was carried out between May 1st and May 27th by the Department of Health Service Support (DHSS), in association with the Thailand Youth Institute and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The study involved over 40,000 participants aged between 6 and 30 years old. The findings show that 18% of those surveyed use e-cigarettes, many having mistaken beliefs about vaping. Specifically, 61% believe that it can help stop smoking traditional cigarettes, 51% view nicotine as healthy, and half believe that e-cigarettes are safer than regular smoking. Moreover, a quarter of the respondents think e-cigarettes don't contain nicotine, 23% mistakenly think it is legal to use them, and 12% incorrectly believe that the vapors produced are risk-free. In light of these results, the DHSS has begun efforts to educate people about the dangers of e-cigarettes and correct these wrong views, through the GEN-H Health Hero network. Meanwhile, authorities in the province of Surat Thani have confiscated illegal vaping products worth 8 million baht. Acting on a lead, the customs officers intercepted a shipment on Highway 41 in Tha Chang district. The shipment, heading from Hat Yai to Bangkok, included close to a million illegal cigarettes and over 3,800 e-cigarettes and liquids. 9. The Deputy Government Spokesperson, Karom Polpornklang, has announced that the Cabinet has approved a new law to extend the period of fee waivers for hotels. This move, suggested by the Ministry of Interior, is aimed at helping hotels lower their costs in the continuing aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Karom explained that the waived fees would cause a yearly revenue deficit of around 27 million baht, based on the projected 677,500 hotel rooms in 2024. However, the step is seen as a way to provide aid and lessen the financial stress for hotels that are still recovering from the ramifications of the pandemic. Tourism, a major sector, experienced a significant decrease in foreign visitors due to COVID-19. In 2019, it accounted for roughly 11.5% of Thailand's GDP, with close to 40 million tourists. But the pandemic caused a steep decline in these numbers, with merely 7.16 million tourists arriving in the initial 10 months of 2022. As a response to this drop, the government rolled out support measures for the hotel industry, which included fee waivers and other marketing initiatives. Despite a 34% rise in earnings that brought their total to 724 million baht in 2023, Purple Ventures Co Ltd, the subsidiary that manages operations, has been experiencing escalating financial losses. This situation led to a loss of 2.1 billion baht, pushing the decision to shut Robinhood down. The closure is part of SCB X's larger plan to improve its functions and increase its shareholders' profits. It aligns with the group's financial management goals. The bank gave assurances that this closure wouldn't interfere with its goal to establish itself as a leading name in the financial technology sector. Robinhood quickly became popular, especially in Bangkok, due to its policy of not charging for key services such as food delivery. Other service fees were kept competitively low. The application, launched during the height of COVID-19, significantly helped local businesses and merchants in metropolitan and key tourist areas stay afloat through economically challenging times. The app played a crucial role in providing jobs for thousands of riders and gave customers access to various affordable options. The Robinhood app will officially stop working at 8 p.m. on July 31, although the specific Robinhood Shop, Robinhood Rider, and Robinhood Driver applications will still be operational until the same time. 15. In Chiang Mai, 1.6 million methamphetamine tablets were confiscated by soldiers from fleeing drug dealers. One suspect was apprehended during the scramble in Fang district, which happened on Monday evening. The Chaiyanuparb special unit soldiers had been dispatched to a border area in Fang after receiving information about a group of 5-6 suspected drug traffickers crossing from Myanmar. A patrol noticed men with rucksacks moving through a lychee farm in Pha Kha village. At the edge of the plantation, the men met up with a pickup truck and a motorcyclist who were waiting for them. The troops attempted to stop them for inspection, but the men hurriedly drove away. The local road checkpoints were then alerted by the patrol. Despite gunshots being shot at them, the escaping men drove past one checkpoint. They were then pursued by the soldiers to Wat Huai Chanu's realms, where the suspects abandoned the vehicles and took off on foot. One man was apprehended while 16 sacks carrying roughly 1.6 million meth tablets were confiscated, according to arresting officials. The police also seized a pickup truck, registered in Chiang Rai, and a motorcycle as potential evidence. 17. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin clarified that the policy to stimulate the economy doesn't aim to favor foreigners or big investors. He said the Ministry of Finance proposed this plan as part of their economic growth strategy. Current laws allow for 30-year leases. However, the Prime Minister believes it's fairer to extend these leases to 99 years. He made it clear that this is a lease extension, not a sale, and it mirrors practices in countries that offer leases up to 150 years. He thinks a 99-year lease fits well for Thailand. About condo ownership, the rise from 49% to 75% will keep voting rights at 49%, allowing Thai ownership to remain the majority at 51%. Foreign owners will only have residency rights, not voting ones. In response to questions about the opposition party's plan to contest the Digital Wallet stipend scheme in court, the Prime Minister showed confidence that the scheme will go on within legal parameters without delaying the planned timeline. 19. A plane carrying Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, will make a stopover in Bangkok for refueling, according to a senior Thai official. The plane will then continue on to the Northern Mariana Islands, a US region located in the Pacific Ocean. The flight from London is scheduled to touch down at approximately 11:50 am (0450 GMT), refuel, resupply water, and then depart at 9:00 pm for Saipan island. The information comes from an anonymous official. As per a plea deal, Assange will be taken to face a judge in the US territory. This arrangement is anticipated to lead to his freedom and return to Australia, his homeland. Assange, 52, has agreed to plead guilty to a single charge of conspiracy to acquire and disclose national defense information, as mentioned in a court document in the Northern Mariana Islands. Scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning local time, Assange is expected to receive a 62-month prison sentence, but will be credited for over five years served in jail in Britain. Assange has been accused of publishing around 700,000 classified documents related to the US' military and diplomatic activities since 2010. He's been held in a high-security prison in London since 2019, after seeking asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges, which were eventually dropped. According to WikiLeaks, Assange was granted bail, transported from Belmarsh jail to Stansted airport, on the outskirts of London, before being put on a plane. This plea deal puts an end to the long-lasting dispute over US attempts to extradite Assange from Britain under the 1917 Espionage Act. US President Joe Biden had been experiencing increasing pressure to abandon the long-standing case against Assange, so this development doesn't come as a surprise. 23. Local police have announced their intentions to shut down a motorcycle taxi stand located outside the Central Pattaya mall following a brutal assault on a Russian man last Saturday. The incident is not the first of its kind, with locals comparing the aggressive tendencies of the taxi riders to that of a mafia gang. This most recent event was captured in a video shared on Facebook by Thanathan Pramunpong, a member of the Move Forward Party (MFP). The footage, posted last Sunday, shows a group of taxi riders launching a violent attack on a foreigner, later identified as a Russian man. The incident took place outside the Central Pattaya mall on Pattaya Sai Song Road. After the clip was widely shared on Thai social media platforms, many locals forwarded their complaints to Thanathan, claiming that these motorcycle taxi riders were asserting their power over them akin to a mafia gang. They even restricted parking on public roads, particularly for app-based drivers. People have highlighted instances where simply attempting to pick up loved ones led to aggressive encounters with the taxi riders. Prompted by the incident and ensuing complaints, Thanathan challenged the Department of Land Transport, questioning their allowance of such unchecked power of the taxi riders over public spaces. His astonishing reveal was met with agreement amongst his followers, who called for the authorities to intervene. Thanathan later informed his followers that he had attempted to confront the issue with the taxi riders themselves. They justified their violent outburst by placing the blame on the Russian man, who they claimed had inappropriate behavior. According to the riders, the foreigner had parked near their base and replied with an obscene gesture when requested to move, leading to the physical confrontation. In response to this recent incident, the Mueang Pattaya Police Station has vowed to exact legal action on the riders responsible for the assault. They plan to not just impose a fine, but also to initiate charges and legal proceedings against them. Additionally, they're considering closing down the taxi stand to prevent any future incidents, given the history of such violent events reportedly tallying up to three so far. 25. To protect public health, the Public Health Department officials carried out a detailed food safety inspection at Rong Po Market in North Pattaya last week. Banglamung authorities were quite thorough in their inspection on Friday, June 21, examining each vendor closely. They also handed out leaflets explaining the strict inspection criteria. Each vendor at Rong Po Market was carefully evaluated in three crucial areas: location, food quality, and equipment standards. The location checks were especially rigorous, with vendors required to possess valid permits and keep their stalls clean and sturdy. These stalls, including the vehicles and selling areas, had to be easy to clean and at least 60 cm above the ground. Officials strictly enforced rules on lighting and the use of covers to keep food uncontaminated. Food quality and equipment standards were seriously scrutinized, with officials evaluating the safety of both fresh and dry foods. Vendors were required to store these items at the right temperatures and follow precise cleaning guidelines. Vendors also had to keep seasonings and additives clean and use separate equipment for raw and cooked foods. Providing clean water storage for cooking was another mandatory condition. This yearly thorough review is important in upholding high food safety standards year-round. In addition to inspecting, officials also gave advice and suggestions to any vendors who didn't meet the strict standards.
