  2. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has seen a significant increase in foreign investment inflows for the first seven months of this year. Data figures from the Ministry of Commerce indicated that the kingdom attracted 73.64 billion baht (~US$2 billion) in foreign investment over the January-July period, 28.93 billion baht more than the same period of last year. Acting Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said this was boosted by the country’s investment promotion policies and reflects foreign investor confidence in Thailand’s development outlook. He added that the top three sources of foreign investment inflows during the January-July period were Japan, Singapore and the United States. Boosted by recovery in the tourism sector, Thailand’s economy expanded 2.4% year-on-year in the first half of 2022 and the Bank of Thailand (BOT) expects annual economic growth to reach 3.3% by year end. 3. Government and FDA to Hold New Discussions on Kratom BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Justice has announced that it will work with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow the use of kratom leaves in food, herbal and cosmetic products. 4. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Justice has announced that it will work with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow the use of kratom leaves in food, herbal and cosmetic products. On August 24, Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) was taken off the national list of controlled substances. Thais, under FDA regulations, are permitted to cultivate and sell kratom plants, while the government plans to later develop the plant as an economic crop. According to Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin, his ministry had received numerous complaints from business owners who have been unable to convert kratom leaves into products such as medicine, food and cosmetics due to FDA regulations. Kratom, like cannabis, has been removed from the list of controlled substances but must be processed legally. Somsak noted that despite the decriminalization of kratom, the plant still cannot be used in many industries despite its benefits, which include combating fatigue, boosting energy, enhancing mood and relieving pain. Due to a lack of clinical trials, FDA Strategy and Planning Division Director Warawut Sermsinsiri said concerns remain about the safety of kratom in food and other products. He added that the agency will need more information to ensure public safety. According to the director, a research team will be formed to compile studies conducted in Thailand and abroad to ensure that the herb or its extracts are not harmful to human health. 9. Soi Dog Foundation recently carried out its annual vaccination drive at the Phuket Stray Dog Shelter in Thalang – also known as the government dog pound. A team of Soi Dog veterinarians, community outreach staff, and rescue officers, alongside a representative from the Phuket Provincial Office of the Department of Livestock Development, came together to ensure all 735 resident dogs at the government-operated facility received vital vaccinations against six diseases, including rabies, distemper, and parvovirus. “Annual vaccinations of shelter dogs are a must and should be standard at every dog shelter,” said Dr. Alicja Izydorczyk, Soi Dog’s International Director of Animal Welfare. “Distemper and parvovirus are extremely contagious, and both are very common in Thailand, killing hundreds of thousands of dogs every year. If dogs in a shelter are not vaccinated regularly, there is a very high chance of an outbreak which can easily kill half of the shelter dog population.” Full Story: https://thepattayanews.com/2022/09/02/soi-dog-carries-out-annual-vaccination-drive-at-phuket-stray-dog-shelter/ -- © Copyright The Pattaya News 2022-09-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
