  1. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai Airways International and Bangchak Corp have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the utilization of sustainable aviation fuel, in a landmark move towards achieving carbon neutrality in the aviation sector. The agreement, announced on May 24, aims to encourage both domestic and international aviation industries to embrace sustainable practices, ultimately working towards the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. According to Taviroj Songkumpol, the chief of Thai Airways International’s corporate strategy, the aviation sector currently accounts for 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure that is projected to rise as the sector recovers. Recognizing the urgent need for change, the partnership between Thai Airways International and Bangchak Corp will focus on sharing knowledge and experiences to effectively implement sustainable aviation fuel solutions. Bangchak Corp, an energy company based in Thailand, has already laid out plans to convert its oil refineries into bio-refineries with the aim of producing biofuels. This transition will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both the transport and aviation sectors. In line with these efforts, Bangchak Corp launched a successful campaign late last year, recycling used cooking oil to create jet fuel. The collaboration between Thai Airways International and Bangchak Corp not only marks a significant step forward in promoting sustainable aviation, but it also holds the potential to increase the value of recycled fuel. By reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation sector, the partnership aligns with global environmental goals and sets an example for other airlines and energy companies to follow suit. 5. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in Thailand at the end of this month as a result of Typhoon Mawar’s indirect influence in the region. The department reported that Mawar, which evolved from a tropical storm into a typhoon, is currently in the Pacific Ocean and is forecast to move northwest rather than towards the South China Sea. Two weather agencies, which are the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and Japan Meteorological Agency, warned that Mawar could intensify into a "super typhoon" by Friday as a result of the rise in the sea surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean. Residents in many provinces are advised to beware of heavy rain during the end of this month. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Warning Council Foundation has asked citizens to build pools or weirs to retain rainwater as a safeguard against the effects of El Nino, which will likely impact Thailand in August. The Foundation warned that due to El Nino, Thailand might not receive much rain in August, and urged farmers to keep a close watch on weather forecasts in the upcoming months. The Royal Thai Force (RTAF) is insisting on the need to acquire new aircraft to replace its aging F-16 fighter jets, which are about to be decommissioned, in order to maintain its combat readiness and to protect the country’s air space, Air Vice Marshal Prapas Sonjaidee, spokesman for the RTAF, said Thursday. The United States rejected Thailand’s request to buy their state-of-the art F-35A stealth fighters. The RTAF was recently informed of the US administration’s rejection by the US ambassador to Thailand Robert F. Godec, during his recent call on the Air Force commander-in-chief. According to the explanation given by the US administration, it will take at least ten years for the US to approve the sale of the advanced jet fighters to a new customer like Thailand and there are numerous requirements that Thailand must meet before the sale can be approved. The heavy downpour, which lasted for about an hour and was accompanied by strong winds, affected flood-prone locations such as Sukhumvit Road, South Pattaya Road, Pattaya Beach Road, Third Road near the Paniat Chang intersection, Moom Aroi intersection, and the road along the railway. The torrential rain began around 9.30pm, with flood levels in some areas reaching between 30 centimetres and one metre in height. However, the storm and flooding subsided relatively quickly, thanks to the installation of larger drains that have proven more effective at draining water compared to previous years. Thailand’s rainy season officially started on Monday, May 22 and is expected to last until mid-October. However, the southern part of the country, particularly the southeast coastal areas, will continue to experience rainfall until mid-January 2024, according to the Meteorological Department. The Thai Meteorological Department‘s latest weather forecast for the next 24 hours, predicts heavy rainfall and strong winds in several regions due to the influence of the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure system covering parts of upper Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin.
