BANGKOK (NNT) - A recent investigation revealed a fraudulent operation involving the issuance of fake national ID cards. Authorities have conducted searches and arrests in various locations, uncovering materials and expanding the investigation due to potential links to other criminal activities. Suttipong Juljarern, Permanent Secretary for Interior, raised the matter following a recent report from the Department of Provincial Administration and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). The 2 agencies coordinated efforts to search and arrest a group of scammers dwindling people into paying almost a hundred thousand baht for fake national ID cards. These cards were advertised on a social media page using images of meetings at the Ministry of Interior. Arrests were made in Chiang Rai; Nakhon Sawan; and Nonthaburi. Seized items included related materials and bankbooks. The investigation is expanding due to potential links to other crimes. The Permanent Secretary stated that this is not the first incident of this nature. In the past, many fraudsters have impersonated high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Interior, posting on social media that they can assist in obtaining national ID cards. Victims often include foreigners or those without legal registration status. Not only do they lose substantial amounts of money, but they also do not receive the promised ID cards and may face legal consequences. He warned that the process of making national ID cards is clearly defined by law. The Department of Provincial Administration does not have a policy to create ID cards online and does not charge any fees not stipulated by law. He underlined that those who claim they can make ID cards online are fraudsters. The public is urged to report suspicions to the Damrongtham Center hotline at 1567, available 24 hours a day. MDES Convenes Meeting to Kick Off Cybersecurity Plan BANGKOK (NNT) - A key meeting was held to initiate cybersecurity operations under the 2019 Cybersecurity Act for the 2024 fiscal year. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1312491-mdes-convenes-meeting-to-kick-off-cybersecurity-plan/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - A key meeting was held to initiate cybersecurity operations under the 2019 Cybersecurity Act for the 2024 fiscal year. Prasert Jantararuangtong, Minister of Digital Economy and Society, chaired the meeting which underscored the significance of 2024 as challenging for all agencies. Previously, it was reported to the Prime Minister that 15 million data records had been breached, indicating the need for strict data security measures to prevent public distress. Digital wallet threats were also discussed, as members of the public eagerly anticipate the policy to provide a 10,000 baht stipend to the digital wallet system. The ministry plans to take proactive steps and elevate its readiness to handle such threats. As a result, the Personal Data Protection Committee has established the PDPC Eagle Eye, a center to monitor and investigate public data breaches and personal data leaks. From November 9th to 20th, the PDPC Eagle Eye audited more than 3,000 organizations from both the governmental and the private sectors. The center detected nearly 1,200 data breaches and resolved 780 incidents. Additionally, three cases of personal data trading are under investigation by the Technology Crime Suppression Division. The center is tasked to scrutinize 9,000 organizations within 30 days. Furthermore, the National Cybersecurity Agency has been assigned to inspect vulnerabilities in cybersecurity systems, especially in state agencies holding extensive public data. These agencies are instructed to correct any identified vulnerabilities promptly, with severe penalties for repeated offenses in line with the law. It’s November and a cool breeze is blowing. While this should be welcomed as it heralds the cool season, instead it signals that burning season is making a comeback and smoke-laden haze that contains fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) is returning. Parts of Thailand are under threat again. People in many areas are now at risk as poor air quality conditions caused by hazardous haze have started to harm their health. A news report released this week showed that people in 31 provinces including Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Chai Nat and Bangkok are living in a blanket of smoke. The areas had levels of air pollution way above the unhealthy level. Thanathorn puts Move Forward in awkward position While he was in exile, Thaksin Shinawatra welcomed Thai visitors all the time, so it’s not such a big deal that Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit has admitted to meeting him overseas during the hectic attempts to form a government after the May 14 election. It’s Thanathorn’s apparently-harmless statement about the Move Forward-Pheu Thai relationship that can do far-bigger damage. While he was in exile, Thaksin Shinawatra welcomed Thai visitors all the time, so it’s not such a big deal that Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit has admitted to meeting him overseas during the hectic attempts to form a government after the May 14 election. It’s Thanathorn’s apparently-harmless statement about the Move Forward-Pheu Thai relationship that can do far-bigger damage. In a court of law, Move Forward would be able to easily play down the meeting and even tell the judges that it knew nothing about it. Thanathorn is a grown man who can go anywhere he likes without having to tell anyone, it could be said. So, if Thanathorn and Thaksin happened to be in the same location overseas at the same time, the two politicians could naturally meet to catch up with family affairs or other trivial things, the defence would say. This could dilute the embarrassment of Chaithawat Tulathon and Pannika Wanich strongly denying that such a meeting had taken place. They might not have known, or they understandably were concerned that an admission would have undue ramifications leading to the dissolution of Move Forward. (It was wrong to lie about it, but it was defendable.) Purple and Red Lines Losing Bt7.4m a Day Since Bt20 Fare Imposed Operators of the Purple Line and Red Line suburban train services suffered a combined loss of Bt7.4 million per day between October 16 and November 14, after fares were capped at Bt20, said Dr Samart Ratchapolsitte, deputy leader of the Democrat party and an expert in mass transit. Operators of the Purple Line and Red Line suburban train services suffered a combined loss of Bt7.4 million per day between October 16 and November 14, after fares were capped at Bt20, said Dr Samart Ratchapolsitte, deputy leader of the Democrat party and an expert in mass transit. Writing in his Facebook post today, Dr Samart said that he was not surprised that Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit did not give a press conference a month after the 20-baht train fare was imposed, which is in sharp contrast to the start of the new fare structure on October 16th, when the smiling minister brandished a 20-baht banknote at a press conference. During the first month of the capped fare, Dr. Samart says that the average gross revenue of the two train lines amounted to about 1.3 million baht per day (500,000 baht on the Red Line and 800,000 baht on the Purple Line), while the total operating costs amounted to 8.7 million baht per day, resulting in about 7.4 million baht of operating losses each day. Thailand is abuzz with excitement as the much-anticipated Loy Krathong celebrations kick off with the “Delightful Colours of the River, Loy Krathong Celebrations 2023” festival. Loy Krathong, often referred to as the Festival of Lights, is more than just a celebration—it’s a grand expression of gratitude to Ganga, the water goddess, for the vital role water plays in Thai culture. This annual event takes place on the night of the full moon in the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which this year falls on November 27. Imagine millions of Thais preparing to launch beautifully decorated floats, known as krathongs, on the water. Alongside these floating offerings, they extend their apologies to the Goddess Ganga, a personification of the river, for any past slip-ups, such as water pollution. This festival seamlessly blends tradition with modern vibes, featuring fireworks, captivating light shows, and cultural events that leave you in awe. And it’s not just for the locals; tourists enthusiastically join the fun.
