Former Democrat party deputy leader Prinn Panitchpakdi was sentenced to two years in prison today (Monday), after he was found guilty of sexually harassing an underage girl. The court acquitted him of rape and sexual harassment charges in another case, due to insufficient evidence. On August 10, Prinn was also found guilty of sexually abusing an 18-year-old student at a restaurant in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok and he was sentenced to two years and eight months for that offence. A fatal accident occurred when a factory owner’s vehicle plunged into a canal, in Nonthaburi. The incident took place last night, near the canal on Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi. The unfortunate car plunge was reported to Prut Jamsanson, Bang Bua Thong police station’s commander, and Apisit Momnitykul, an investigating officer. The vehicle, owned by the factory owner, had skidded off the road and into the canal. Upon inspection, six roadside reflector posts were found knocked down, and tyre marks were leading into the canal. The vehicle, a Toyota van, was registered under the name of 60 year old Panas. Panas was identified as the managing director of a metalworking factory, located near the accident scene. Despite initial uncertainty about the occupants of the submerged vehicle, rescue workers and divers from the Po Tek Tung Foundation were able to locate and retrieve the submerged vehicle after a search lasting more than an hour. The vehicle was found approximately 150 metres from the fall point, about 10 metres from the shore, and at a depth of about 4 metres. One body was recovered from the vehicle, a man aged around 60 years. The identity of the man matched that of Panas, the registered owner of the vehicle. A Thai bus driver and a ticket collector on the number 75 public bus have been fined for abandoning a sick teenager on the side of the road in Bangkok. The teenager had fainted on the bus. A Thai woman who witnessed the incident urged a news platform on Facebook to spread the story to the public so the staff could be punished. The woman said the incident happened on a pavement near the Wat Phraya Krai Police Station in Bangkok’s Bang Kho Laem district at around 6pm on Saturday, September 16. The woman explained that the ticket collector carried the boy off the bus and left him on the pavement before climbing back on the bus. The boy was sitting on the ground and looked exhausted. The woman said she rushed over to check on him and learned that he had fainted on the bus. She gave him a bottle of water and some medicine and stayed with him until he felt better. The boy revealed that he had taken the bus from Yan Nawa district to go home on Soi Pracha Uthit 27. The woman offered to help him contact his parents, but the boy refused, saying that his mother had died and his father was at work. Another woman came to check on the boy and revealed that she had been on the same bus. She got off at the next stop to check on the boy. She added that she and other passengers were shocked to see what the staff had done to the boy. The woman later accompanied the boy home. Thailand proudly claims the 10th position in the Asia Pacific region, according to the 2023 World Talent Ranking (WTR) conducted by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD). The latest 2023 WTR report reveals Thailand’s respectable standing at 45th place among the 64 countries assessed. This accomplishment, coupled with a global ranking of 29th in the appeal category, solidifies Thailand’s ability to attract and retain talent, both from within the country and abroad. The IMD’s 2023 WTR emerges as a critical evaluation tool amid the persistent impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on talent competitiveness worldwide. Undeterred by these global challenges, Switzerland holds its ground, maintaining the top position, with Luxembourg and Iceland hot on its heels. Singapore, the lone Asian country, secures a place within the top ten, standing proud at the eighth position. The 2023 WTR edition is a product of meticulous study and analysis of 64 economies. The research hinges on 31 distinct criteria, incorporating a blend of hard data and survey responses from executives. This comprehensive approach yields a reflection of each economy’s global talent competitiveness. These criteria are then systematically categorised into three factors. Investment and Development, the first factor, delves into the commitment level of domestic resources towards nurturing local talent. The second factor, Appeal, concentrates on the capability of an economy to draw in and retain talent, from both local and international spheres. Lastly, Readiness scrutinises the quality and readiness of skills and competencies available in the talent pool. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Thailand revealed the results of their analysis of seafood imported from Japan following the discharge of treated water from a nuclear power plant. Out of 75 samples, all were quarantined for inspection and seafood safety. If any were found to be contaminated, they would be destroyed and imports immediately suspended, stated Lerschai Lertsirivorakul, Deputy Secretary-General of the FDA, on September 25. The first batch of goods was expected to arrive in September, following the release of treated water from a nuclear power plant in Fukushima on August 24. Lerschai explained that they had sent the samples for analysis of Cesium-134 (Cs-134) and Cesium-137 (Cs-137) levels at the Office for Atoms for Peace, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. As Cesium is the primary radioactive substance released into the environment by nuclear power plants, it was necessary to examine its levels in these imports. Of all samples, 42 were found to be within the standard radiation levels as per the announcement of the Ministry of Public Health. The remaining 33 samples are still undergoing lab analysis. All goods are held during the evaluation process. By Nattapong Westwood Caption: The Food and Drug Administration in Thailand aims to thoroughly check all seafood imported from Japan. Once a favourite destination for Chinese tourists, Thailand is facing a tourism crisis due to social media rumours, and one particular blockbuster movie, that have created an image of danger and scams. Thailand relies heavily on tourism, especially from China, which used to contribute more than 10 million visitors annually before the Covid-19 pandemic. Viral social media rumors have spread fear that tourists could be kidnapped and forced into scams across the border in Myanmar or Cambodia. While some basis in reality exists, with documented cases of Chinese nationals lured into online scams in Southeast Asia, there is no evidence of tourists being routinely abducted in Thailand. The blockbuster movie “No More Bets,” based on “real events,” has further fueled concerns. Despite its release last month, it has become the third-most-popular film in China this year, generating over US$521 million in revenue and intensifying discussions about the perceived risks of visiting Thailand. Last week’s Supreme Court ruling banning former MP Pannika Wanich from elections and political office for life has been criticized as political “capital punishment” by many observers. Ending her political life was too harsh a penalty for the young politician to pay, they said. Even Pannika’s political enemy, Pareena Kraikupt, showed sympathy, saying that she disagreed with the lifetime ban. “If politicians commit wrongdoing, legal action is taken against them under criminal or civil law. They get fined or jailed. But they should not be deprived of their rights in the name of ethics,” Pareena said. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has welcomed Srettha Thavisin’s idea of having convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra act as an advisor, once he completes serving time in prison. “Thaksin could be assigned as the prime minister’s chief advisor. My understanding is that Srettha wishes to learn from Thaksin’s experience and capabilities,” said Phumtham, who is also commerce minister, adding that he will look into the legality of such a move. “I believe he (Thaksin) has value to add to the government and to the people of Thailand,” Srettha said during a recent interview with Bloomberg Television in New York. He also mentioned Thaksin’s popularity. “He was, and probably still is the most popular prime minister in the history of Thai politics,” Srettha claimed. “To give advice and opinions is something that Thaksin could do, as he ran the country as premier for six years,” said Phumtham said, adding Thaksin, meanwhile, would like to be with his family and anything he could do for the country, he would certainly do.
