  2. Police arrested a Cambodian couple for more than 100 pickpocketing offences in different areas of Bangkok. The Khmer couple confessed to their crimes and revealed that they had learned their dishonest skills from Vietnamese thieves in Thailand. Pickpocketing complaints from both Thais and foreigners in various business districts of Bangkok, such as Sukhumvit, Nan, Silom, and Sathon, started pouring into the police. Victims reported thefts of both property and money. The most recent victim filed a complaint at Tung Mahamek Police Station on September 20, providing crucial information about the culprits. This information proved pivotal in the successful identification of the criminals. As outlined in the police report, the pickpocketing gang comprised four Cambodian members who resided in rented rooms in Samut Prakan province, near Bangkok. They would typically convene at the Imperial Samrong shopping mall or the Bang Na intersection to strategize and then execute their thefts individually in different areas. Operating in pairs, each member had a specific role to fulfil in the pickpocketing scheme. One member acted as a lookout, meticulously ensuring the absence of law enforcement or vigilant witnesses before discreetly signalling to their partner to pilfer the victims’ belongings. After obtaining the money, they would separately depart the scene using public transport. Police managed to locate and apprehend two members of the gang, identified as 43 year old Boon and 31 year old Chan. This couple consistently carried out their thefts as a team. Officers arrested them outside the Imperial Samrong shopping mall and subsequently conducted a search of their room. 4. A brazen thief in Nakhon Ratchasima left a local school in a predicament after stealing sacks of paddy rice intended for student lunches. The theft occurred at Baan Nong Wa En School in Bua Yai district, where the culprit broke into the school’s rice storage, making off nearly half of the stockpiled rice. The incident was discovered by Wanmanee Thongprom, an assistant janitor at Baan Nong Waen School. He revealed that the stolen rice was meant to be milled for school lunch for the students. Upon opening the storage, he was shocked to find nearly half of the hundred sacks of stored rice missing. A swift inspection of the area revealed the traces of an unknown number of perpetrators. They had used a cutter to remove the zinc ceiling of the storage and snuck away with the rice. Footprints were left behind as the thief climbed over the school wall to make their escape, leaving a trail of scattered rice from a likely torn sack, reported KhaoSod. The stolen rice was part of a school lunch initiative for the students, contributed by the parents as a food fund complemented by government-provided meal support. The theft of numerous sacks of rice has thus posed a significant challenge to this endeavour. 8. There’s a sniff of high season in the air with the reopening of some of the most popular islands and island tours over the next few weeks. Each year several of the most popular island trips are closed down due to the poor weather and rough seas, as well as a commitment from marine national park officials to give some of the most popular locations a rest from tourists once a year. Maya Bay, for example, is closed down each year during August and September. The tourist magnet on Koh Phi Phi Leh was closed for nearly three years, including during the Covid pandemic for a much needed rest from the tourists. So the annual 2 month break is now an important part of the attraction’s eco-maintenance moving forward. 14. Rapid rainfall across Prachin Buri province in central Thailand caused a forest stream from Thap Lan National Park to overflow into Khlong Lam Phaya Than, resulting in the flooding of five villages. It has been reported that residents are greatly distressed by the event, and schools have been ordered to close for one day. The stream, originating between Wang Nam Khiao district in Nakhon Ratchasima and Buphram subdistrict in Prachin Buri, couldn’t drain fast enough, causing water from the stream to flood the lower-lying areas along Suwinthawong Road. The water level increased, affecting house number 530 in Moo 10, Buphram subdistrict, causing the residents to move their belongings to higher ground and relocate their bedridden patients. The Subdistrict Administrative Organisation issued a warning to local leaders and village heads to alert their communities to the risk of flash floods in the low-lying areas along Khlong Lam Phaya Than, reported KhaoSod. A 59 year old resident of Buri, Khaow, reported that the water started overflowing and flooding from midnight following heavy rainfall. She stayed vigilant until around 3am when the water level rose and flooded her house, forcing her to quickly pack her belongings and move her bedridden patients to a safer location. The snake had consumed a rare breed of cat, known as a Khao Manee, before being captured by rescue workers and returned to the wild. The house owner, 33 year old Chonisara Rujinath, was shocked to discover the snake in her home, particularly as it had eaten one of her beloved pets. The python was discovered in Chonisara’s single-storey wooden house, situated near the Pho Canal, in the Bang Pa-In district.
