  2. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s first overseas mission, to the United Nations General Assembly, was regarded at home as a success only in business aspects, but a failure in terms of the environment and human rights, notably the role of his government in solving the crisis in Myanmar. Srettha led a Thai delegation to New York for the UN annual conference from September 18-24 with the major objective of reviving global confidence in Thailand and to reaffirm the country’s commitment to the international community. Former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij posted on his Facebook that Srettha’s presence at the UN was a boost for Thailand. Notably in terms of the economy, business and investment. Pol Lt-Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, told the media at a news conference today (Tuesday) that the 15 officers did not take any action to help the two victims or to arrest the gunman. “You are a police officer and, when a crime is taking place, your job is to arrest the suspect unless there is an overriding emergency situation that requires your attention, such as helping someone injured during the commission of the criminal act,” said the CIB commissioner. 6. As the Srettha government is busy trying to revive the Thai economy, it is also facing a long-term dual challenge of keeping pace with digitalisation and the energy transition necessary for establishing sustainable supply chains to achieve net-zero emissions, according to a Thai blockchain leader. In a recent interview with Thai PBS, CEO and founder of Bitkub Group, Jirayut Srupsrisopa, emphasised the need for the Thai government to be proactively equipped for digitalisation and green supply chains. Jirayut asserted that the digital economy would be a major growth engine, with green transitions, such as energy transition and carbon neutrality. Addressing short-term concerns, Jirayut expressed concern over the rising household debt to GDP ratio, which is approaching a historic high of 90% in Thailand. If this trend continues, it could lead to an economic crisis with debt levels outpacing average incomes. 8. In a bid to maintain cleanliness and orderliness, the Chalong Municipality erected a sign prohibiting littering and the dumping of garbage in Phuket. This commendable move is aimed at preserving the beauty and hygiene of the municipality. According to Chalong’s village headman Kokchai Sae-Ung, the land is privately owned. Last year, approval had been given to raise the site using construction waste. A prior fire at the location raised concerns, resulting in the intervention of local firemen and a subsequent prohibition on additional rubbish disposal. Kokchai further denied littering allegations in Phuket and that the pictures making headlines online were recent. “The pictures seen today, released by the mass media all over the country and in Phuket, are old pictures.” Due to the significant storms, Patong City’s Soi Na Nai, Sai Kor Road, and Pracha Nukroh Road all received major flooding. Residents’ worries have increased as the rain continued throughout this week. One of the suspects involved was the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s daughter. He was arrested by police while the other three suspects remain at large. The 48 year old victim, Patcharee, told officers at Mueang Prachuap Kiri Khan Police Station that the incident happened at 8.30am on Wednesday, September 20. She was riding a motorbike home in the eastern province of Prachuap Kiri Khan when a white Honda pickup cut her path. One of the men exited the vehicle and swiftly covered her head with a black cloth. He identified himself as a police officer and brandished a firearm to force her to get into the car. Inside the car, the victim heard one of the men address another person as Ngae. “Ngae, what do we do next?” According to Patcharee’s daughter, 26 year old Pornpimon, Ngae might be a friend of her ex-boyfriend. Ngae contacted Pornpimon and told her that her mother was in the custody of Provincial Police Region 7 and then later called her again and put her mother on the line. 12. A recent Asian Games tennis match delivered an enthralling contest between an unheralded Thai player and a highly-ranked South Korean opponent but ultimately concluded with a display of poor sportsmanship. Thai tennis player, Boom Kasidit, emerged as the surprising victor, causing an upset given that Kwon Soon-woo is 112th in the world and was favourite for overall victory. The 25 year old’s response to his defeat, which involved violently smashing his racket onto the ground and refusing to extend a handshake to his 22 year old Thai counterpart, ignited a global debate. Kwon is currently 112th in the world rankings, although at one point in his career, he achieved a remarkable high of 52nd and secured ten professional titles. This made him a top contender in this year’s Asian Games. Speculation suggests that Kwon’s unsportsmanlike conduct might be attributed to his pending mandatory military service, which he can defer until the age of 28. Winning a gold medal in the Asian Games would have exempted him from this obligation. 14. A young man shared a distressing experience on social media about overworking, which led to an unusual rash all over his body within just three days. Despite multiple medical tests, all the results came back normal. The doctor’s advice was simple yet crucial: Get some quality sleep for two days. This incident serves as a warning about the potential harm that can result from neglecting rest and overtaxing the body’s immune system. The young man had been working excessively, with workdays exceeding 20 hours, and was unable to manage a regular sleep pattern, adding to the strain. His routine job took up about 16 hours of his day, while the remaining hours were spent on livestreaming activities. This lifestyle, though exhausting, was something he had been battling through until his body started showing peculiar signs. He noticed a rash on his arms and legs. Initially, he didn’t suspect anything serious. However, the rash became more pronounced after a day, causing alarm. The spots were red and densely clustered, which led him to fear that it might be a case of dengue fever. 15. Rain reigns in Khon Kaen: Pumps pump out the flood Photo by Mika Baumeister on Unsplash Heavy rains in Khon Kaen triggered a swift response from emergency services, with seven water pumps set up in flood-prone areas to efficiently drain the excess water. 16. Heavy rains in Khon Kaen triggered a swift response from emergency services, with seven water pumps set up in flood-prone areas to efficiently drain the excess water. The local authorities are confident in their ability to manage the high water volumes in Bueng Kaen Nakhon and Bueng Thung Sang. Essential manpower and equipment are on standby to aid those affected around the clock. Today, September 26, Khon Kaen experienced heavy rainfall due to a strong low-pressure system over the central South China Sea, moving across northern Thailand along the monsoon trough. It is expected to affect Thailand until September 29, with September 27, predicted to be the most impacted. The mayor of Khon Kaen, Theerasak Theekhayupan, assured the public that all necessary measures were in place to handle the heavy rainfall. The municipal engineering and sanitation departments have surveyed the primary and secondary drainage routes in the city and other risk-prone areas. They have also removed plant debris blocking the drainage system to enhance its efficiency. Lake levels at Bueng Kaen Nakhon are 0.90 metres below the spillway and can accommodate approximately 500,000 cubic metres of water. Bueng Thung Sang, with water levels 2 metres below the spillway, can accommodate about 1 million cubic metres. The municipality has also prepared a flood prevention and mitigation team with assorted machinery ready for rapid water drainage from the Khlong Rong Mine in case water levels rise. Drainage issues A long-arm backhoe is stationed at the spillway gate number 9 (Soi Prachasamoson 52) to clear debris and plant waste obstructing the drainage system. A JCB excavator is on standby to resolve drainage issues in case of heavy rainfall. 18. Phetchabun’s Si Thep Historical Park may soon restrict tourists from climbing Khao Klang Nok, a ruin considered sacred by locals. The move comes in response to the increasing number of visitors following the park’s declaration as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on September 19. Locals expressed concerns about the influx of tourists, many of whom have been climbing Khao Klang Nok, situated approximately 2 kilometres from the ancient town remains within the park. The hill, a massive, collapsed structure constructed from brick and laterite, measures about 64 metres on each side and stands 20 metres high. The district chief, Weerawat Wattanawongphreuk, raised these concerns with the head of the Si Thep Historical Park. He suggested that preventing visitors from scaling the hill could soon be an implemented measure. Despite the current allowance for tourists to ascend to the peak of the hill, many ancient relics and stupas, revered by local Buddhists, are located there. The district chief considered the act of climbing these sacred sites inappropriate, reported Bangkok Post. 20. The director of the Phitsanulok Highway District, Awirut Thapthimthae, addressed the public confusion caused by the road sign for Wat Chan Thawan Ok. The sign, situated on the Phitsanulok-Nakhon Sawan highway or Si Racha Dechochai Road, in Wat Chan, Mueang, Phitsanulok, has been in place for over a decade. However, it has led to mispronunciations by foreign tourists, causing confusion due to the phonetics of the English transliteration. The sign was written according to the dictionary but has proven problematic for non-Thai speakers. To resolve this, the local authorities have surveyed the Wat Chan Thawan Ok temple and concluded that the sign should be adjusted to read Wat Chan Thawan Ork. This change is anticipated to reduce tourist confusion. Furthermore, the English name for the Ton We intersection will be rectified to Ton Wa, which will further aid international visitors in finding their way into the vicinity. Awirut Thapthimthae made known that the sign serves as a public marker for a tourist route and has been in existence for over a decade. One of Ton’s friends, 17 year old Thanate, collapsed in tears on the floor after learning the tragic news. He admitted to the officers that he accidentally stabbed his friend. The other friends backed up Thanate’s words, saying that the two were close friends and studied at the same school since they were young children.
