Thailand’s popular island destination of Phuket held a forum to discuss the region’s persistent water issues, led by Secretary-General of the Office of National Water Resources (OWNR), Dr Surasee Kittimonthon. The forum, which took place yesterday, was attended by over 300 individuals, including Phuket Vice Governor Amnuay Pinsuwan and Phuket Chamber of Commerce President Kongsak Khuphongsakorn. Dr Surasee later joined another similar event at the Dara Hotel in Wichit. The purpose of these gatherings was to solicit feedback, opinions, and suggestions from locals on the integrated master plan to solve flood-drought problems. The ONWR asserted its readiness to engage with tourism business operators to expedite water-saving measures in the tourism and service sectors. Dr Surasee noted that Phuket was among the initial provinces in Thailand to draft water-resource management master plans at the Subdistrict (Tambon) level. The forum was intended to garner public opinions on the master plan study project and to hear suggestions on the preliminary projects drawn from the plan, which outlined more than 400 ready-to-deploy projects. The official report stated that implementing these projects would enable the government to quickly address urgent issues in the area and use it as a model to replicate the results of project implementation in each aspect of water resource management that supports the development strategy of Phuket Province until 2037. Three urgent projects were highlighted: The improvement of the quality of the village water supply in Pa Khlok, the Tha Maphrao Canal Dredging Project, and a project to construct a weir to reduce water flow and soil erosion in the upper area of the Kathu Waterfall community, reported The Phuket News. Low-cost carrier Nok Airlines stands on the brink of being delisted from the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). This possibility stems from the airline’s failure to improve its financial performance and submit its 2022 financial results within a given timeframe, as stated by the Thai bourse. The SET identified Nok Airlines as a potential candidate for delisting, given that the company’s equity has remained in the negative for two consecutive years and it has been unable to rectify the cause leading to a potential delisting. According to the SET’s statement, the airline has until September 8, 2024, to correct this. Nok Airlines is also under scrutiny for not submitting its financial statements within the designated period. The bourse has given a deadline of October 2, next year for the company to comply, failing which it could face delisting, reported Bangkok Post. SET regulations allow listed companies a grace period of three years to rectify causes for delisting and an additional two years to meet the qualifications required to resume trading. The Thai baht has plummeted to its lowest level against the USD since November last year, driven by concerns of ‘stagflation’ in countries that heavily rely on energy imports. That includes Thailand. The baht experienced its second consecutive day of declines against the USD, falling by 0.6% and reaching its lowest point since November 10, 2022. As of this afternoon, the baht is valued at 36.2 per US dollar. Experts opine that the swift depreciation was influenced by the surge in oil prices, which have risen by approximately 10% this month. Poon Panichpibool, a market strategist at Krungthai Bank, says that the soaring oil prices have led some commodity-related players to purchase dollars. This payment comes after the expected approval from the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC). The debt relates to the Green Line extension and was discussed with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin earlier this week revealed Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt. The debt issue was first addressed in 2019 by the now-disbanded National Council for Peace and Order, which formed a panel to devise a solution. Despite its efforts, the panel failed to secure cabinet approval seven times, prompting further information gathering by the BMA. The 57 year old Chadchart emphasised the necessity of transparency and fairness for all parties involved, including the public and private sectors. This is particularly important as more electric train investments are anticipated in the future. The BMC is expected to take a few weeks to deliberate the matter before forwarding it to the Interior Ministry next month. Fuel Price Cut Eases Public Burden BANGKOK (NNT) - Following the government’s recent policy announcement on reducing fuel prices, the diesel price has been lowered to 29.94 Thai Baht per liter, effective today. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1307115-fuel-price-cut-eases-public-burden/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - Following the government’s recent policy announcement on reducing fuel prices, the diesel price has been lowered to 29.94 Thai Baht per liter, effective today. This cut aligns with the cabinet resolution from September 13th, which sanctioned a 2 Baht per liter reduction in diesel prices to alleviate the cost of living for the general public. This measure, administered through tax reductions and fuel fund management, will remain in effect from today until the end of this year. At gas stations in Yala province, there was a noticeable increase in the number of diesel vehicles lining up to refuel. The community expressed relief over the price reduction, as continuous fuel price hikes had been a source of financial strain. The sentiment was echoed in Uthai Thani province, where most residents appreciated the 2 Baht decrease but also expressed concerns over potential price hikes after the three-month period. They hope the government will cap diesel prices at no more than 30 Thai Baht per liter indefinitely. Meanwhile, users of petrol and ethanol-blended fuels expressed discontent. They argue that they too should benefit from price cuts, given that everyone is a tax-paying citizen. They therefore call for fair and equitable fuel price adjustments. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Energy is considering an initiative to allow specific groups of people and businesses to import oil, aiming to reduce energy costs. The proposal was revealed after a discussion between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, and Customs Department Director-General Patchara Anuntasilpa. The meeting addressed various issues including the true cost of oil imports, annual import data, and related taxes. The plan would permit particular groups, such as logistics associations, to source cheaper oil from abroad. The legal aspects of this strategy are still under review. Any hindrances identified would be addressed to ensure fair and appropriate energy pricing for the public. Regarding Benzene, the Ministry has tasked the Department of Energy Business with investigating the most commonly used types of gasoline in various professions. The aim is to facilitate affordable fuel options, thus enabling businesses to operate with lower energy costs. Si Thep, Thailand – Under the scorching sun, Thai archaeologist Tanachaya Tiandee clambers through ruined pagodas in the ancient town of Si Thep, trying to unlock their mysteries — a task made harder because many of the clues are missing. Looters stripped Thailand’s rich historical sites such as Si Thep over decades, taking many items abroad. The kingdom is now trying to repatriate those stolen cultural treasures. “The big picture like the building was discovered, but the artefacts which tell little details are missing, making a lot of stories untold about Si Thep,” Tanachaya told AFP. “It’s like a piece of puzzle was missing.” Caption: An aerial view of the Si Thep historical site in Phetchabun province. //AFP Full story: Thai PBS 2023-09-20 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
