Police last night arrested a Thai man in connection with an attempted bank robbery in the Ratchada neighbourhood of Bangkok. The attempted bank robbery occurred in front of Soi Ratchadapisek 32 in the Chatuchak district of Bangkok on Tuesday, July 25. The suspect, 40 year old Jaratpong Srichai, visited the bank and feigned the intention of opening a new bank account. A staff member informed Jaratpong that a new account required at least a 500 baht deposit. Jaratpong said he would get the money and disappeared. Jaratpong returned to the bank for the second time but later left without approaching any members of staff. He then came back to the bank for a third time and used the toilet on the premises. After that, he approached a staff member at the counter and demanded the staff hand over money to him. Jaratpong said… “I have a gun. Give me all the money!” The staff member rushed to the security guard for help and Jaratpong made a break for it, escaping on his motorcycle. For the first time in Thailand, lecturers at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences have successfully developed antibody from tobacco plants with inhibitory effects on the growth of cancer cells in laboratory animals. This signals hope for access to effective cancer medication and treatment at a lower cost. From world-class success in producing a COVID-19 vaccine from tobacco plants, today researchers from Baiya Phytopharm Co., Ltd., a Thai company under Chulalongkorn University, have reached another milestone in the research and development of antibody drugs from tobacco plants, which have been found to reduce the size and inhibit the growth of cancer cells in laboratory animals. “Our research team has developed the technology and system to produce plant proteins to make antibody drugs, with the hope to help reduce the cost of drug production so that cancer patients in the country can access drugs more easily and widely,” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Waranyoo Phoolcharoen of Department of Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Botany, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, spoke of the objectives of conducting biopharmaceutical research for cancer immunotherapy treatment. The potential of this research has recently been recognized by a 2023 research award from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT). Origin of the production of antibody drugs from tobacco plants Assoc. Prof. Dr. Waranyoo explains immunotherapy for cancer: “Cancer is caused by cancer cells binding to cells in the immune system and blocking the functioning of cells in the body. The commonly known chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells in the body. For immunotherapy or cell therapy, however, the aim is not to destroy cancer cells, but stimulate the immune cells in the patient’s immune system to strengthen, thus blocking cancer cells from binding to cells in the immune system and allowing the system to handle cancer cells by itself.” By Thaiger Caption: Photo courtesy of Chulalongkorn Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/chulalongkorn-combats-cancer-in-lab-animals-with-plant-based-antibody -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-31 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Taxi turmoil: Thonglor Road assault leaves three passengers shaken in Bangkok Photo via Facebook/ Chatchanan Karn Chantajinda A group of taxi drivers physically assaulted three passengers on Thonglor Road in Bangkok on Saturday night. A group of taxi drivers physically assaulted three passengers on Thonglor Road in Bangkok on Saturday night. A Thai man, Chatchanan Chantajinda, shared the story and videos of the assault on him and his friends, another man and a woman, on Facebook yesterday, Sunday, July 30. One of the videos even showed two police officers present at the scene but they seemed unable to control a man in a dark blue shirt who was responsible for assaulting two of the victims. Chatchanan admitted that he and his two friends had been drinking alcohol before the incident, which might have led to some impulsive actions on their part towards the drivers. The conflict arose when Chatchanan and his friends tried to hail a taxi with the registration plate number 7กท 2376 to take them from Thonglor Soi 12 to Sukhumvit Soi 14. However, the driver, who lacked a taxi license, refused to take them. While Chatchanan was inquiring about the reason, he noticed the car’s registration plate indicated it was a personal vehicle, not an official taxi. Angered by the refusal and the apparent violation of regulations, Chatchanan confronted the driver by saying… “Why do you refuse us? Wait, is your car illegal, huh?” Chatchanan’s friends, not wanting to escalate the situation, hailed another taxi and left the scene. Nevertheless, the original taxi driver and five to six other drivers followed them. Chatchanan admitted to expressing his frustration by raising a middle finger at the illegal driver. As they reached Thonglor Road, the illegal taxi driver cut them off, forcing them to stop. Chatchanan and his friends urged their driver to continue but five to six other taxi drivers emerged from another vehicle and blocked their path. Residents and business operators in South Pattaya are still frustrated with the persistent presence of noisy Middle Eastern street racers gathering at night. Some hotel residents even moved from the area to avoid the unbearable nuisance, according to hotel operators. Police officers from the Pattaya police station raided Soi Yen Sabai in South Pattaya early this morning today, July 31st, following residents’ complaints that young adults, mostly Kuwaiti nationals, had congregated in the alley and caused noise disturbances with their rented modified motorcycles. The complaints stated that these young men revved up their engines, blocked the entire alley with their vehicles, parked in front of houses without permission, and drove loudly up and down the street without any regard for traffic rules. They also claimed the riders never wore helmets and had no valid licenses or insurance. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will revoke the construction permit for the luxury Ashton Asoke condominium in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area, as ordered by the Supreme Administrative Court, but the owner can apply for a new permit. Deputy Bangkok Governor Wisanu Subsompon said that, according to procedure, following a ruling by the Supreme Administrative Court, the city administration must revoke the existing construction permit adding, however, that it does not mean that the condominium building will be demolished. The owner of the condominium, Ananda Development, can apply for a new construction permit from City Hall. According to the Supreme Administrative Court’s ruling, the access to and from the condominium onto Asoke Road is located on land expropriated from private landowners by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), for the construction of the Blue Line train project and, therefore, cannot be used for other purposes. As such, the land was leased illegally to Ananda Development by the MRTA. Labor Ministry Reaffirms Overall Stability of Social Security Fund BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Labor has reaffirmed the stability of the Social Security Fund, following concerns from several academic sectors about its financial liquidity and possible collapse within the next three decades. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Labor has reaffirmed the stability of the Social Security Fund, following concerns from several academic sectors about its financial liquidity and possible collapse within the next three decades. According to Boonsong Thapchaiyuth, Secretary-General of the Social Security Office, the concerns stemmed from the structural deficit and pension payments exceeding the fund’s contributions. Boonsong clarified that the Social Security Fund still holds an adequate reserve ratio in accordance with principles of actuarial science. The fund’s status has been regularly evaluated in collaboration with international labor organization experts. There are currently about 571,000 pension recipients, with the number of cumulative pension recipients projected to rapidly increase to 2 million by 2030, 5 million by 2040, and 8 million by 2050. In response, the Social Security Office has taken measures to amend laws related to old-age benefits in order to match the needs of the insured. These measures are currently under consideration by the House of Representatives. In terms of long-term policy, discussions will be held with stakeholders, including the insured, employers, and the government, to jointly find solutions for ensuring the sustainability of pension rights. The aim is to provide a secure safety net for insured individuals in their retirement years.
