  2. Thailand’s eminent historian, social critic and scholar Professor Nithi Iewsriwong died of lung cancer in Chiang Mai province today (Monday). He was 83. A source who is close to Nithi’s family said that the late professor had decided to donate his body to the Suan Dok Hospital in Chiang Mai and that there won’t be a funeral, because he didn’t want to bother people who may have to travel to Chiang Mai to attend. A religious ceremony will, however, be held at Wat Umong this Thursday morning. 4. Thailand’s inflation rate is the lowest among the seven ASEAN countries which have already announced their rates, with inflation for the whole year expected to range between 1% and 2%, according to Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office. Based on information from June, he said Thailand’s low inflation rate is in line with global inflation, which is steadily falling, and is the lowest compared to Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. The consumer price index for July is equivalent to 107.82, compared to 107.41 for the same period last year, resulting in a rate increase of only 0.38% year on year. The low inflation rate is attributable to a drop in food prices, such as pork, which has continued for three consecutive months, and energy prices falling for five months in a row, compared to the same period last year. 7. In a surprising revelation following a fire incident, the Royal Thai Police (RTP) confirmed that a housemaid, a long-standing occupant of the damaged property, was indeed the criminal behind the theft and subsequent fire outbreak. Unforeseen by the homeowners, the incident came to light following investigations by the local police. The fire broke out yesterday, August 6, in one of the properties in Soi Lat Phrao 109, Khlong Chan, Bang Kapi, Bangkok, at approximately 4.52am. Firefighters acted swiftly, successfully suppressing the intense fire within only a few moments. However, drama unfolded after the fire was brought under control. The RTP proceeded to search the firefighters who had come to execute their duty at the scene of the conflagration. In a personal Facebook post, one of the firefighters expressed their surprise. “Since when do we have to undergo searches after extinguishing fires? Why do we have to prove our innocence? 9. A 31 year old woman was shocked to find a fishing hook and line embedded in her meal. The woman, named June, raised concerns about food safety and quality after her unpleasant experience with food ordered from a restaurant in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi. June yesterday reported that on July 27, she and a friend ordered food through a delivery service. Their order included spicy fried catfish leaves, plain rice, and rice with mutton. As they were enjoying their lunch and portioning out the catfish for later, she discovered a fishing hook and line among the fish’s innards in her second serving. Catfish is usually one of her favourites, but this discovery made her stomach turn. She is now raising alarms on food safety and hygiene standards. Upon the disturbing realisation, she immediately alerted her friend, who was equally baffled by the presence of the fishing hook in their meal. They thought the possibility was unbelievable, but the hook was indeed real. June recounted contacting the restaurant to report her shocking discovery. The staff were stunned, asserting they had thoroughly cleaned the fish. They offered to make a fresh dish of fried catfish leaf, however, June, still in a state of shock, preferred a refund. The restaurant refunded her 120 baht for the dish, reported Sanook. By Samantha Rose Caption: A fish hook in her meal was enough to put her off of catfish - and all seafood. Elderly Thai man’s online fake teeth buy bites back with laughable consequences Picture courtesy of KhaoSod The pitfalls of online shopping were once again brought into the spotlight after an elderly man was duped into purchasing a set of fake teeth that turned out to be unusable, laughably plastic in appearance. The incident, shared on TikTok by the user @tuttapan1329 on August 6, sparked a wider conversation about the risk of buying less-than-authentic goods online, which continues to catch consumers unaware despite the variety of products and services available. 11. The pitfalls of online shopping were once again brought into the spotlight after an elderly man was duped into purchasing a set of fake teeth that turned out to be unusable, laughably plastic in appearance. The incident, shared on TikTok by the user @tuttapan1329 on August 6, sparked a wider conversation about the risk of buying less-than-authentic goods online, which continues to catch consumers unaware despite the variety of products and services available. Often sold by anonymous sellers or through suspect call centres, these low-quality products lure victims with their competitive pricing, freebies, and persuasive advertisement strategies that paint a deceivingly functional picture of the items. The challenge, however, lies in distinguishing between unreliable vendors leveraging these techniques and legitimate businesses. The TikTok video posted by @tuttapan1329 offered viewers an insight into this issue. The user posted the story about his father who had been tricked into ordering not one, but two sets of fake teeth from a renowned online platform. The post hysterically juxtaposed the bright, unrealistic whiteness of the fake teeth against his normal set, labelling the counterfeit as a futile attempt at mimicking real dentures. The caption accompanying the post warned users against allowing the elderly to watch numerous YouTube videos, ultimately leading them towards scams wielding enticing offers such as “650 baht for one, get one free.” By Nattapong Westwood Caption: Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/elderly-man-tricked-into-buying-fake-teeth-online-sparks-debate-on-online-shopping-risks

MICE revenue in Thailand lowered amid sluggish Chinese market response Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post The meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) revenue forecast for the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has been lowered to 96 billion baht. 13. The meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) revenue forecast for the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has been lowered to 96 billion baht. This is less than half the recorded figures for 2019, mainly due to a sluggish response from the Chinese market. TCEB’s president, Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya disclosed that despite the strong comeback of MICE travellers from Europe, India, and South East Asia, the return of the Chinese market is essential in meeting previous projections. Several unfavourable factors, including a limited number of flights and a slow visa application process for groups, are reportedly undermining the growth of the Chinese Mice market. Additionally, the Chinese government’s push for increased domestic spending to bolster local consumption has boosted China’s MICE industry, trickling down its influence in markets such as Thailand. China stood as the top market for Thailand’s MICE industry in 2019, charting over 247,000 arrivals. However, the impact of Beijing’s three-year zero-Covid policy saw it slip from being one of the top five sources in the past year. Meanwhile, TCEB plans on hosting roadshows in Beijing and Guangzhou in the coming week to boost transactions with Chinese buyers. 15. Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) officers summoned a famous Thai actor in connection with his alleged involvement in a fake car registration plate gang. The actor, Mario Maurer, denied the accusation, asserting that he was a victim of criminal activity. CCIB officers recently arrested two ringleaders involved in the fraudulent registration enterprise. They acquired the usernames and passwords of officials within the Land Transport Department, enabling them to gain unauthorised access to the system and create counterfeit registration plates. CCIB officers confiscated 65 vehicles worth over 77 million baht. The cars were being prepared to sell to collectors who were mostly Thai celebrities. Thai news agencies then reported that a popular actor named M was also involved in the gang. Mario later admitted to the media that actor M was him. He claimed that he had already spoken with the police via a phone call and added that he will meet officers in a few days when his schedule is clear. Mario insisted on his innocence stating he and his trusted agent fell victim to the criminal gang and were not involved. He stated that his agent bought the car from the gang and resold it to him, adding he has not received it yet. 16. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Airports (DOA) is embarking on an ambitious plan to elevate Hua Hin Airport to international status, as part of efforts to bolster regional tourism. The airport, managed by the DOA, recently completed the expansion of its runway, now measuring 2.1 kilometers in length and 60 meters in width, capable of accommodating Airbus A320 aircraft. Three parking bays have also been set up to help service planes. Currently, Thai AirAsia operates a three-times-a-week one-stop service between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai, but the airport’s vision extends beyond domestic routes. To welcome international flights, safety improvements around the airport are in the works. These include the expansion of the traffic tunnel on Phetkasem Road, approximately 1 kilometer from the airport, as well as enhancements to the airport train tunnel and the safe zone surrounding the airport, which will comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. The DOA has identified a company for the safety expansion project, which will require approval from the Ministry of Transport. The ministry will further forward the budget request to the Budget Bureau before the project can commence. The estimated duration for completion, following the signing of the contract, is estimated at around 600 days. The airport is also conducting an assessment of its facility expansion options and planning to hold meetings with commercial airlines to understand their concerns. A comprehensive report is expected to be compiled this year and subsequently submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) for the approval of an international airport license. According to Nopasit Chakpitak, President of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, the facility currently handles around 30,000 private jets annually, with the capacity to attract more air traffic. Wassana Srikanchana President of the Hua Hin Cha Am Tourism Business Association, highlighted the airport’s strategic advantage due to its proximity to Bangkok, noting that the transformation of Hua Hin Airport into an international hub is expected to draw more tourists and further stimulate economic activity in the region, contributing significantly to its overall development. 18. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has introduced the Halal Economic Corridor (HEC) in the southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Satun, as well as districts of Songkhla, to enhance the local economy and improve the livelihoods of residents. The initiative aims to establish Thailand as a global hub for halal goods, catering to Islamic principles. Spearheading the project, Rear Adm Somkiat Ponprayoon, Secretary-General of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC), said the region’s historical trade connections with the Arab World and its significant Muslim population make it an ideal candidate for the halal corridor. With a total of around 1.6 billion Muslims across the member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the corridor seeks to tap into this vast market and promote economic growth. One of the main objectives of the HEC is to promote the production and export of halal meat, including beef, chicken and goat, to Islamic countries. To achieve this, the SBPAC is collaborating with partners such as the Livestock Department, National Farmer Councils and various cow breeding associations to encourage over 10,000 farmers in the five provinces to participate in the halal meat production campaign. Beyond meat exports, the HEC also aims to attract halal-friendly tourism and wellness activities. Local hospitals, hotels and spas are being encouraged to adopt halal practices catering to Muslim tourists from across the globe. Additionally, the SBPAC is collaborating with various universities, including the Prince of Songkla University Halal Institute, Fatoni University in Pattani, Rajabhat University Yala, and the Halal Institute of Chulalongkorn University, to educate people on halal knowledge and ensure the safety of halal products from local entrepreneurs. Rear Adm Somkiat added that Thailand has already engaged in discussions with halal investors from the ASEAN region and the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia, who have expressed interest in investing in the HEC. Prospective investors said they were keen to understand the production process and ensure compliance with Islamic principles, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and certification in the halal economic corridor. 22. BANGKOK (์NNT) - Thailand is set to host the 5th round of negotiations for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) in September. The meeting, which will take place in Bangkok from September 10-16, aims to build on the draft IPEF texts for the four pillars covering trade, supply chains, clean economy, and fair economy. The IPEF was launched last year in Tokyo by U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, with Thailand being one of the 14 founding signatories. Other partnership members comprise the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, Brunei, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand and the Philippines. The primary objective of the IPEF is to enhance economic engagement among partner nations and promote growth, peace and prosperity in the region. During the upcoming Bangkok meeting, Thailand will highlight the significance of cooperation on capacity building and technical cooperation. The government will also focus on advancing new technological cooperation, particularly in relation to clean energy, which includes areas such as electric vehicles (EVs), sustainable aviation fuel, circular economy and the carbon market. The Thai delegation has reaffirmed its commitment to adhere to relevant international standards on anti-corruption and taxation, while considering the diverse domestic laws, regulations and capacities of the IPEF partners. Thailand also supports the desire of partners to establish a mechanism for addressing the group’s structure and financial support, and has emphasized priority issues that will aid negotiations on trade. In addition, IPEF Partners have exchanged views on ways to advance cooperation, including the establishment of capacity building and technical assistance mechanisms in order to achieve tangible outcomes. Plans for the next IPEF ministerial meeting have been scheduled for November 2023 in San Francisco, California. The 5th round of IPEF negotiations in Bangkok is expected to play a crucial role in furthering economic collaboration among the partner countries and laying the groundwork for sustainable growth and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
