Thailand’s former constitution writer Borwornsak Uwanno suggests that Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat seek a ruling from the Constitutional Court over parliament’s decision, by a majority vote on Wednesday, that Pita’s re-nomination falls foul of its Rule 41. He said that he feels sorry for Thailand and is upset with the MPs who joined senators to vote against Pita, noting that the Constitution has a clause specifying the process of the selection of the prime minister, which cannot be overruled by Rule 41. “Even though you (MPs) are in the opposition camp, you should know when to shed the role of the opposition and do the right thing,” said Borwornsak, adding that parliament’s decision on Wednesday is not yet final. Outgoing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha appealed for calm on Thursday, after supporters of the Move Forward leader, whose hopes of becoming prime minister have been dashed, conducted two noisy but peaceful gatherings. Deputy government spokesman Rachada Dhnadirek said Prayut has kept abreast of the developing political situation. “As the interim government is tasked with keeping peace and stability in the country, he wishes that all sides express their political opinions peacefully, within the rule of law and without violence….They should not destroy the economy, trade or investment. It is likely that, by the end of this year, the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand will reach 35 million,” she said. A Thai food blogger took up Burger King Thailand‘s challenge to taste the newly launched Real Meat Burger with a staggering 100 meat patties, priced at a jaw-dropping 10,039 baht. The fast-food franchise is delighting foodies with an array of unexpected burger selections, ranging from the Real Cheeseburger, generously loaded with 20 slices of American cheese, to the towering Real Meat Burger, which starts with three succulent meat patties and can be scaled up all the way to an astonishing 100 patties. In response to fervent requests from Burger King fans, the Real Meat Burger made its debut on July 18. As mentioned in a post on the shop’s official Facebook page, the Real Meat Burger comes with three meat patties nestled between buns, priced at 339 baht. Pork is also available as an alternative option for customers. Not stopping at that, the shop tantalizingly suggested that meat enthusiasts can pile on even more patties on their bun, at an additional 100 baht for each extra patty. The page admin thoughtfully included a price list for followers: a burger with four meat patties costs 439 baht, five meat patties are priced at 539 baht, 10 meat patties will set you back 1,039 baht, and the awe-inspiring 100 patties cost a staggering 10,039 baht. Several food bloggers decided to take up the Real Meat Burger challenge and shared their daring reviews with followers. The famous promotion platform, Punpromotion, shared that they ordered the burger with 12 patties. After trying, the platform recommended adding some greens and sauce and doing some exercise after the heavy meal. In a significant development, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases is considering a lawsuit against the Election Commission (EC) of Thailand for unjustly targeting Pita Limjaroenrat, the Move Forward Party’s leader, resulting in damage to his reputation. A verdict on whether to officially open the case for hearing is expected at 9:30am on August 9. Those implicated in the lawsuit include EC Chairman Ittiporn Boonpracong, all five election commissioners, and EC Secretary-General Sawang Boonmee, as disclosed by Yongyut Saokaewsatit, the legal representative of Pita. It is claimed that all seven EC officials are culpable for negligence of official duties and misconduct, as detailed in Section 157 of the Criminal Code. The lawyer stated that if found guilty, this could potentially lead to the impeachment of all seven EC officials. This case comes on the back of the EC’s decision to escalate an ineligibility case relating to Pita’s prior holding of 42,000 shares in iTV Plc, to the Constitutional Court. The lawyer said… “It has been incumbent on these seven EC officials to meticulously scrutinise Limjaroenrat’s eligibility before the general election that took place on May 14.” By Bob Scott Caption: Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of Move Forward Party, raises his hand as he leaves Parliament in Bangkok, Thailand, Wednesday, July 19, 2023. The spotlight has now turned on the Pheu Thai Party, which is likely to take over from the Move Forward party in forming the next government, after they lost their bid to nominate their leader Pita Limjaroenrat as prime minister today (Wednesday). Pheu Thai leader Cholnan Srikaew reconfirmed the unity of the eight political parties in the coalition pact, despite the latest setback suffered by Move Forward, and hinted at his party’s readiness to take the lead in forming the coalition. Chaithawat Tulathon, secretary general of Move Forward, admitted that Pita’s failure to be nominated as prime minister has opened the way for Pheu Thai to be at the core of the next government. “We need to talk with Move Forward and the other partners, to sound out their views on what steps are to be taken,” Cholnan told Thai PBS when asked about Pheu Thai’s political plan. Cholnan said that the formation of the coalition and the nomination of the prime minister should be agreed upon before next Thursday, when the Parliament meets again. Extreme weather conditions are continuing to wreak havoc in Phuket. Ferocious winds toppled numerous trees, resulting in significant blockages yesterday. These unexpected weather conditions have caused travel disruption across the island and two cleanup teams have been dispatched to counter the impact. A sizeable tree that fell on Soi Vachira, near Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town, was one of the major obstructions reported. It took several hours for municipal workers to safely clear the heavy tree, allowing a return to normal traffic movement in the area. Other areas were similarly affected with fallen trees damaging homes and blocking roads, a real hindrance for the local communities as recorded by the Phuket Information Center. Since yesterday, the heavy rainfall and robust wind waves have been of concern, with a weather advisory warning issued by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). This warning was re-emphasised today by Wirote, an official from the TMD Southern Meteorological Center, who underlines the urgency of the prevailing situation, reported The Phuket News. Wirote wrote… “During July 19 and 20, the rather strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea and southern Thailand’s west coast. For this reason, the abundance of rain and heavy rain to very heavy rain will occur in some areas.” By Mitch Connor Caption: Picture courtesy of Phuket City Municipality Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/phuket/phuket-ravaged-by-extreme-weather-causing-traffic-chaos-and-safety-concerns -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. A local discovered a dead Thai man about 500 metres from a police station by the side of the Baan Lakchai Road in the Baan Kruat district of the Isaan province of Burriram. Officers from Non Charoen Police Station and medical officers from the Baan Kruat Hospital were notified of the dead Thai man, later identified as 55 year old Team Mantalung. He was found lying face up, covered with leaves, and wearing a red shirt with long jeans. Officers came across a wooden stick near the body, which was visibly stained with blood. The presence of the object, along with wounds found on Team’s body, led the police to suspect that he was murdered. Officers are now investigating fingerprints left on the wooden stick. The deceased’s uncle, 62 year old Lue Mantalung, revealed that his nephew divorced his wife 20 years ago and had been living alone ever since. He was addicted to alcohol but never had problems with anyone in the community. The local man who found his body, 55 year old Young Puengsakun, was riding a bicycle to his rice field and noticed a pair of shoes on the road. Upon further inspection, he also observed a broken glass bottle and a mound of leaves nearby. Young decided to investigate further and closely examined the pile of leaves, revealing the disturbing sight of two legs protruding from within. Three people reported a case of fraud and vehicle theft to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) today. The case involved a hustler who claimed to be associated with local law enforcement in the Pak Chong district of the northeast Nakhon Ratchasima province. The accused is alleged to have borrowed vehicles since 2020 under various pretences before running away with the vehicles. The fraud victims have tried to locate the accused without success. They are seeking police support for the arrest, and possibly the recovery of the vehicles. Cumulative losses amount to nearly 2 million baht (US$58,754). The accused is known as ‘Police Captain Ji’ or ‘Police Captain Jon.’ One man conned is a relative of the accused, who lent him a Mitsubishi Mirage in April based on a plea that his wife needed transportation for her childbirth-related errands. The lender later contacted him for the return of the vehicle, but the requests were evaded, leading to the eventual severance of communication. Another victim, a soldier, was tricked similarly. The accused had posted on Facebook seeking vehicle bailouts. Upon contact, the soldier agreed to the terms and handed his car over. However, five months later, the vehicle was not returned, and several creditors of the accused were haunting the soldier for money. The accused deflected the inquiries before subsequently cutting off communication. In a significant development, police apprehended a woman known as “the quack teacher.” The suspect falsely claimed to be an officer of the Mirror Foundation, a social development foundation. The woman claimed to be capable of enrolment into voluntary teaching services across the schools in the northeast of Thailand. She swindled schools into raising funds for construction and solicited money from the deceived parties. The suspect, who is two months pregnant, was arrested yesterday. Police were instructed to investigate and execute the arrest as per the warrant issued by the Ubon Ratchathani court dated July 5. The charges include “forging official documents, using false documents, fraud by impersonation, and introducing fake computer data into a computer system likely to cause damage to others or the public.” Moreover, she was wanted for another order of the Rayong court issued yesterday, in case number 642/2022 and red case number 2335/2022 for fraud charges. Twenty-eight year old Ratchadaphon was apprehended in front of Room 179/529 in Map Yang Phon, Pluak Daeng, in the eastern Rayong province, yesterday at 2pm. Previously, officers at the Children and Women’s Welfare supervision of the Royal Thai Police were approached by Mirror Foundation officials regarding Ratchadaporn’s imposter act. To get enrolled as a voluntary assistant teacher, she was found duping people into believing her false identity through various pictures and clips on social media wearing a uniform of an assistant teacher in the northeastern schools. Consequently, she received registration charges posing as an officer of the Mirror Foundation, much to the disbelief of the victims, reported KhaoSod. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) apprehended the final suspect involved in a counterfeit bond scheme. The gang collaborated with fraudulent money-lenders to deceive prominent owners of guesthouse businesses, by soliciting payment for the approval of large loans. This culminated in the arrest of 64 year old man yesterday under the charge of currency counterfeiting. The arrested individual, Thanakrit, is accused of conniving with three other individuals identified only by their first names – Hongyok, Santinan, and Napat. The accomplices managed to convincingly orchestrate a plot against Thanakrit to gain his trust. Once aware that Thanakrit needed capital for renovating his guesthouse, they assured him that they had connections with a group of investors who could lend large sums of money. The only condition is a pre-emptive service fee needed to be paid to this investor group. A contract negotiation was scheduled at a hotel near Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Bangkok. During the meeting, these fraudsters displayed government bonds worth 600 million baht (US$17,584,992) to evince their financial credibility. Tricked by this charade, the victim agreed to transfer 840,000 baht (US$24,619) as a service fee. Post transaction, the victim failed to secure the agreed-upon loan. Suspecting foul play, he decided to verify the government bond numbers with Thailand’s central bank, only to discover they were forged, reported KhaoSod.
