  1. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government’s excise tax cut for diesel will end this week. The Oil Fuel Fund Office will be announcing the newly adjusted diesel prices tomorrow, with full excise tax applied, while government officials believe the discontinuation of this campaign will not affect consumers. The government’s current excise tax cut for diesel at 5 baht per liter will end this 20 July, with a clear indication from the Ministry of Finance that this campaign will not be extended. Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary Krisada Chinavicharana said the discontinuation of this campaign should not affect the general public, as the status of the Oil Fuel Fund has improved. Mr. Krisada said although the excise tax cut cost some 10 billion baht per month in excise tax revenue, the excise department was still able to achieve its revenue target. Meanwhile, the Oil Fuel Fund balance currently stands at negative 52.27 billion baht, which is a level at which the Ministry of Finance expects the fund to resume its function as a pricing mechanism for oil prices. The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) will be announcing the adjusted diesel rate tomorrow, which will be inclusive of the full excise tax applied, after the end of the tax cut campaign. 3. BANGKOK (NNT) - An eight-party alliance seeking to form Thailand’s next government reaffirmed its backing for Pita Limjaroenrat to become prime minister, Pita said on Monday, despite his defeat last week in a parliamentary vote. The 42-year-old Pita, leader of the Move Forward Party - the surprise winner of a May 14 general election - failed in his initial bid to win the requisite support of more than half of the combined lower and upper houses. The legislature will hold another vote on Wednesday (19 July). After a meeting with the alliance, Pita said his re-nomination for prime minister could not be blocked by the Senate. He also said his candidacy should not be affected by a complaint against him that was filed to the Constitutional Court. However, Pita added that if he failed again, he would "step aside" and let Move Forward’s ally, the Pheu Thai party, "take action" and try to be the manager of the next cabinet. Over the weekend, he raised the prospect of a political ally leading the new government if he failed to become prime minister. Pheu Thai won the second-largest share of votes in May’s election. One of its prime ministerial candidates, real estate magnate Srettha Thavisin, could be nominated for the next leader in the third vote for prime minister, if any. In last week’s vote, Pita secured 324 votes, with only 13 senators backing him and the rest voting against him or abstaining. 4. NGO says mercy killing of stray animals is strictly controlled by Thai government Euthanizing stray animals is a sensitive topic in Thailand. 5. Euthanizing stray animals is a sensitive topic in Thailand. It is wildly misunderstood that it is a main tool used in controlling the number of strays. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) has, however, explained that the use of this method is strictly limited, unless the animal has health issues or an easily transmitted disease. A global charity focused on animal welfare, Four Paws International, is working with Thai governmental bodies in Trang and Bangkok to reduce the number of stray animals, using the ‘’Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release’’ or CNVR approach. Sterilising and vaccinating stray animals are significant measures to effectively control the numbers. This aims at breaking the cycle of suffering those animals experience. By sterilising and vaccinating 70% of a given stray animal population, they can manage the rate of reproduction. According to Matt Backhouse, Head of Stray Animal Care in Southeast Asia for Four Paws International, Thailand is doing well in terms of its progressive attitude towards animal welfare. “It’s one of the first countries in Southeast Asia that has animal welfare legislation which, like all legislation, could be improved. Thailand has banned the dog and cat meat trade, which is excellent, and has government engagement and investment in these CNVR programs, unlike some countries which are performing euthanasia for the regulation of the animal population.” Full Story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/ngo-says-mercy-killing-of-stray-animals-is-strictly-controlled-by-thai-government/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-07-18 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 7. A political group gathered in front of the Constitutional Court today (Tuesday) to protest against the Election Commission’s (EC) submission of Pita Limjaroenrat’s shareholding case to the Court. The group, called “June 24 Democracy”, also submitted a petition to the Court’s president against the Court’s accepting for consideration whether Pita and his party’s election campaign promise to amend the lèse majesté law could be considered an attempt to overthrow the country’s democratic system of government with the King as head of state. Somyot Prueksakasemsuk, leader of the group, expressed doubt over the EC’s real intention in the shareholding case and whether it is being neutral in its handling of the matter. 15. The Thalang division of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA Thalang) issued a statement declaring two separate power interruptions planned for tomorrow. The blackouts are reported to impact both residences and businesses in the areas of Bang Tao and Pa Khlok, Phuket. The Bang Tao power cut, specifically in the region of Cherng Talay, is scheduled from 9am through to 4.30pm. This interruption in service allows work to enhance the low-voltage power distribution system, according to the PEA of Thalang. Furthermore, the outage is an opportunity for workers to relocate a transformer required for the power supply of Stone Bitter Co Ltd. As per the PEA’s description, the disruption will occur in front of the Hilton Garden Inn Phuket Bang Tao. However, a closer look at the map provided by PEA Thalang indicates the area to be impacted is essentially along Soi Cherng Talay 16, located behind the Boat Avenue shopping complex. PEA Thalang further specified that the power outage would commence just north of the Sai Taan Housing estate before moving along the road towards Oceanstone Condominium. The official announcement did not include a list of adjoining areas that could potentially be affected by the power interruption. The student in the video, her friend, and her friend’s racist mother were also slammed by netizens for their disrespectful behaviour and racial discrimination. The video was initially posted on Instagram by a student from a high school in the Nong Chock district of Bangkok. The video caption stated… “Friend, don’t feel like studying, huh?” In the video, a student girl in a pink shirt is seen standing in front of the class behind her black teacher while the teacher is conducting a lesson for the rest of the pupils.
