The prospect of tropical storm Talim bringing heavy rain and potential floods to Bangkok has been met with preparedness and strategic planning by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), according to a statement from a high-ranking BMA official. The BMA’s Director of City Drainage and Sewerage, Surat Charoenchaisakul, revealed in a recent conversation that the flood prevention control centre is keepings a vigilant eye on the approaching storm, based on updates and forecasts from the Meteorological Department. In addition, the BMA’s weather radar station is actively monitoring incoming rain clouds that are expected to hit Bangkok and nearby areas. The intention is to enable the implementation of precautionary measures in a timely manner. To further equip the city against potential flooding, water levels in the canals and retention areas have been managed to a lower degree under the flood prevention plan. The administration is also preparing mobile rapid response teams that are ready to be dispatched to areas inundated with water, such as tunnels, with a focus on ensuring swift drainage of floodwater. Mobile water pumps, cranes, balloon lights, fuel, and other necessary equipment are all on standby, ready to be deployed where needed, Bangkok Post reported. The purpose of these committees is to ensure a fair and complete investigation is conducted for both parties involved, reported KhaoSod. An unidentified 45 year old man suffered an untimely death when an apparently minor car accident escalated into a horrifying blaze. The incident, which left locals unable to assist despite witnessing it first-hand, occurred yesterday on the road linking the villages of Sam Phrao and Nong Khae in Mueang district in Udon Thani province. At the scene, police discovered a completely burnt-out Mitsubishi Strada, registration number บว2368. In the driver’s seat was the dead man, half ejected from the door, suggesting he attempted to escape but failed. A grass cutter, believed to be the man’s, was later recovered from the roadside. It was revealed that the deceased man was a second-hand car dealer of Lao heritage, married to a local woman, and primarily worked selling mowed grass and timber. Pol. Lt. Theeraphap Phukhansai, an investigating official of the Udon Thani City Police Station, speculated the car might have ignited due to an engine malfunction or contact between leaking fuel and a broken electrical line. The blaze may also have originated from the exposed exhaust pipe, given the presence of a lawnmower in the passenger compartment. However, further investigation is still underway to confirm the cause, reported KhaoSod. Diners have been flocking to Lampang province, northern Thailand, for a unique culinary experience dubbed “Hell Erupting Noodles.” It’s a distinctive selection of “Kwai Teow Rue” or boat noodles based on an old recipe from the province of Ayutthaya, served up from a strategically located eatery right in the heart of Sri Chum Square. The Hell Erupting Noodles shop can be found easily. It’s nestled approximately 100 metres away from the Sri Chum junction (inner line), on the road in front of the Sri Chum temple, in the Huawieng sub-district, Lampang town, Lampang province. The flavorful noodle dishes start at a very economical 18 baht per bowl, with Special 1 going for 40 baht and Special 2 priced at 50 baht. There are three popular versions of the noodle dish that customers can opt for, each varying in spiciness. The first heap is less spicy, the second offers medium spiciness and the third heap is for those who love their noodles extremely spicy. Apart from the noodles, recommended dishes are the Hell-Erupting Shabu Hotpot, Hell Erupting Fried Dumplings, and Hell-Erupting Crispy Pork Tendons. Police arrested a Thai man and wife after they allegedly assaulted the man’s mother and stole her cash and gold jewellery. The duo carried out the crime in disguise but the mother was not fooled and managed to identify her son through his voice and the familiar scent of the clothes she cleaned for him. Baan Pong Police Station officers arrested 28 year old Warayuth Khamsai and his 28 year old wife Laongdao Janyit for the assault and theft. The couple planned the theft together and struck the head of the victim, 57 year old Maneerat Khamsai, with a wooden pestle (a grinding club used in a bowl in food preparation) at the family home in the central province of Ratchaburi. According to Maneerat’s oldest son, Thawatchai Khamsai, Warayuth and Laongdao committed the crime on July 13. They tied Maneerat’s arms and legs with an electric wire and covered her eyes with a cloth and then stole 3,000 baht cash, a gold necklace and a ring valued at 21,000 baht. As they escaped from the house, Warayuth hit his mother on the head with a wooden pestle in an attempt to knock her out but it failed. Laongdao then attempted to stab her mother-in-law but Maneerat begged her to stop. The unruly couple then fled the premises leaving Maneerat to crawl out of her house to seek assistance from neighbours, who promptly transported her to the hospital. Warayuth and Laongdao were confident that Maneerat would not recognise them, so they visited her in hospital. Warayuth played innocent and questioned his mother about the violent robbery. Maneerat told her son that she knew the thieves were him and his wife. The two denied the allegation and left the hospital in anger. Govt Advances Development of Laem Chabang Green Port BANGKOK (NNT) - The government is advancing the development of the Laem Chabang port into a green port, with the aim of reducing environmental pollution caused by maritime transportation and creating opportunities for related industries. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1300995-govt-advances-development-of-laem-chabang-green-port/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - The government is advancing the development of the Laem Chabang port into a green port, with the aim of reducing environmental pollution caused by maritime transportation and creating opportunities for related industries. The transformation of the port aligns with green port directives, which include reducing energy and fuel consumption while limiting carbon dioxide emissions. According to Caretaker Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek, the third stage of the port development involves reducing fuel consumption by transitioning to electric trucks. Converting about 10% of all vehicles at the port, or roughly 1,000 trucks per day, to electric could decrease annual diesel consumption by up to 50 million liters. This would potentially save around 800 million baht in annual fuel costs and significantly reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, solar power demand of the Laem Chabang port is expected to increase by an average of 11.1% annually from 2023 onwards. An investment of around 600 million baht is earmarked for this initiative. There are also plans to develop a rail freight transport hub, which would increase cargo handling capacity to 6 million TEUs per year, reducing shipping costs by roughly 1.2 billion baht and further limiting carbon dioxide emissions. The move aligns with the state’s goal of developing rail transportation at the Laem Chabang port. Furthermore, the development of this green port could create business opportunities for manufacturers of electric trucks and batteries, potentially generating at least 1.8 billion baht in revenue. Companies involved in the solar cell industry could also see an increase in revenue by about 600 million baht from 2024 to 2035. The push toward developing a green port is intended to support Thailand’s growing economy and steps towards becoming a key maritime transport hub in Asia, accommodating economic growth in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and the wider region. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government’s excise tax cut for diesel will end this week. The Oil Fuel Fund Office will be announcing the newly adjusted diesel prices tomorrow, with full excise tax applied, while government officials believe the discontinuation of this campaign will not affect consumers. The government’s current excise tax cut for diesel at 5 baht per liter will end this 20 July, with a clear indication from the Ministry of Finance that this campaign will not be extended. Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary Krisada Chinavicharana said the discontinuation of this campaign should not affect the general public, as the status of the Oil Fuel Fund has improved. Mr. Krisada said although the excise tax cut cost some 10 billion baht per month in excise tax revenue, the excise department was still able to achieve its revenue target. Meanwhile, the Oil Fuel Fund balance currently stands at negative 52.27 billion baht, which is a level at which the Ministry of Finance expects the fund to resume its function as a pricing mechanism for oil prices. The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) will be announcing the adjusted diesel rate tomorrow, which will be inclusive of the full excise tax applied, after the end of the tax cut campaign. BANGKOK (NNT) - An eight-party alliance seeking to form Thailand’s next government reaffirmed its backing for Pita Limjaroenrat to become prime minister, Pita said on Monday, despite his defeat last week in a parliamentary vote. The 42-year-old Pita, leader of the Move Forward Party - the surprise winner of a May 14 general election - failed in his initial bid to win the requisite support of more than half of the combined lower and upper houses. The legislature will hold another vote on Wednesday (19 July). After a meeting with the alliance, Pita said his re-nomination for prime minister could not be blocked by the Senate. He also said his candidacy should not be affected by a complaint against him that was filed to the Constitutional Court. However, Pita added that if he failed again, he would "step aside" and let Move Forward’s ally, the Pheu Thai party, "take action" and try to be the manager of the next cabinet. Over the weekend, he raised the prospect of a political ally leading the new government if he failed to become prime minister. Pheu Thai won the second-largest share of votes in May’s election. One of its prime ministerial candidates, real estate magnate Srettha Thavisin, could be nominated for the next leader in the third vote for prime minister, if any. In last week’s vote, Pita secured 324 votes, with only 13 senators backing him and the rest voting against him or abstaining. Euthanizing stray animals is a sensitive topic in Thailand. It is wildly misunderstood that it is a main tool used in controlling the number of strays. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) has, however, explained that the use of this method is strictly limited, unless the animal has health issues or an easily transmitted disease. A global charity focused on animal welfare, Four Paws International, is working with Thai governmental bodies in Trang and Bangkok to reduce the number of stray animals, using the ‘’Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release’’ or CNVR approach. Sterilising and vaccinating stray animals are significant measures to effectively control the numbers. This aims at breaking the cycle of suffering those animals experience. By sterilising and vaccinating 70% of a given stray animal population, they can manage the rate of reproduction. According to Matt Backhouse, Head of Stray Animal Care in Southeast Asia for Four Paws International, Thailand is doing well in terms of its progressive attitude towards animal welfare. “It’s one of the first countries in Southeast Asia that has animal welfare legislation which, like all legislation, could be improved. Thailand has banned the dog and cat meat trade, which is excellent, and has government engagement and investment in these CNVR programs, unlike some countries which are performing euthanasia for the regulation of the animal population.” Full Story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/ngo-says-mercy-killing-of-stray-animals-is-strictly-controlled-by-thai-government/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-07-18 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
