BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles, United States has sent its first batch of cast overseas ballots back to Thailand. Meanwhile, the Department of Consular Affairs has expressed confidence all ballots will arrive in Thailand in time for the vote tally on May 14. Thai consulate officials in Los Angeles have completed counting ballots cast by overseas voters in the United States and sorted them into diplomatic pouches. The first batch of shipment consisted of 1,406 sets of ballots. The consulate officials had received the cast ballots from voters by post. The documents accompanying the ballots were inspected and the consulate general had registered each voter who exercised his or her vote. The ballots were then sorted to be shipped to the 400 electoral districts in Thailand. Consulate officials said it emphasized to overseas voters to send their ballots to the consulate general as soon as possible even if the date passes beyond the deadline of May 2. The consulate general in LA is responsible for ballots cast from Thais in 13 Western US states. Another 4 batches of ballots will be shipped from here to Thailand early this month. 70 year old village chief fights off daring motorcycle heist to save valuable gold necklace A 70 year old former village chief from Sriracha successfully defended his valuable gold necklace against a thief attempting to steal it whilst both were on moving motorbikes. A 70 year old former village chief from Sriracha successfully defended his valuable gold necklace against a thief attempting to steal it whilst both were on moving motorbikes. Kasem Thanyapol was on his way to purchase construction materials when a man riding a Honda Wave without license plates approached, grabbed his 10-baht weight gold chain and tried pulling it off. Fortunately, the valuable chain, worth over 332,480 baht, was too thick to break, allowing Kasem to maintain possession of it. The quick-thinking former village chief of Bangphra Moo 4 manoeuvred his motorbike against the attacker’s bike and struck the assailant’s head with an iron pipe that he had found nearby. The would-be thief, panicked by the turn of events, fled to Jay Park in Surasak. Kunueng Chokpradit, a 35 year old witness, heard the village chief call for assistance and went to help. However, upon realising that nothing had been stolen, she advised her employees against pursuing the thief. The local police are now investigating the incident and plan to examine CCTV footage in an attempt to identify the offender. Gold thefts in Pattaya are as regular as night turns into day. Only last week, police caught a transwoman changing her hair colour at a salon after she robbed a Pattaya gold shop. In a news conference, council chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk stated that although exports faced a downturn in the first quarter, a resurgence is predicted for the remaining months. Chaichan Chareonsuk noted that the slower contraction of shipments expected in the second quarter is likely to improve during the second half of the year, with increased demand from key markets and China’s economic recovery being major driving factors. He expressed optimism for specific products such as food, agriculture, and vehicles, which are expected to continue performing well. Furthermore, the chairman reported that the total exports in US dollars for the first quarter surpassed expectations, indicating that the worst is behind them. The January-March exports experienced a 4.5% decline in comparison to last year, while the TNSC had initially forecast a 10% reduction. For the second quarter, the group expects a 2.7% yearly decline compared to the previously predicted 4.7% decrease.
