  1. Picture courtesy of Phuket News. During a recent visit to Phuket, Chatchawan Suksomchit, the chairman of the Senate Standing Commission on Law, Justice and Police, reviewed a proposal aimed at increasing the availability of free legal advice at local police stations. The proposal was initiated by Rungnapha Putkaew, the President of the Phuket branch of the Lawyers Council of Thailand. Currently, 76 registered lawyers are willing to provide this service. However, only one lawyer is available at both Patong Police Station and Phuket City Police Station to offer free legal advice from 8.30am to 4.30pm, including weekends and public holidays. Rungnapha’s goal is to have more lawyers providing free legal assistance to people in need, including tourists, at police stations. She suggested that free legal service providers be made available at more police stations, such as Chalong Police Station, Thalang Police Station, and Wichit Police Station. These lawyers would be equipped to help foreigners with basic legal issues, such as traffic accidents, reported Phuket News. Rungnapha explained that some lawyers have the necessary language skills to support foreign nationals with basic legal advice. However, if a language barrier arises, the foreigner can return another day to consult with a different lawyer. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, May 2, in the Mueang district of Krabi, according to a Phuket Express report. Police were notified of the collision on Sri Trang Road, by the Talad Gao Intersection, and arrived to find a truck that had smashed through a pharmacy. While there was significant damage to the property, it’s understood nobody was injured in the collision. According to the 50 year old truck driver, named as Sirisak Chaiudom, he was travelling down a slope when he realised his brakes weren’t working. He says he decided to crash into the side of the road instead of colliding with cars waiting at the traffic lights. 4. Thailand accelerates shift to renewables amid global energy crisis fallout The global energy crisis has prompted Thailand to accelerate its transition to renewable energy after years of hesitation, joining other countries in adopting wind and solar power to reduce dependency on imported fuels. 5. The global energy crisis has prompted Thailand to accelerate its transition to renewable energy after years of hesitation, joining other countries in adopting wind and solar power to reduce dependency on imported fuels. Thailand’s reconsideration of its renewable energy strategy came after a surge in natural gas prices last year caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Wattanapong Kurovat, director-general of the Energy Policy and Planning Office. This issue was compounded by a decline in domestic production, Bangkok Post reported. In an interview in Bangkok, Wattanapong explained that when Thai authorities requested more energy from renewable plants last year, they discovered that the available capacity was already at its limit. Unlike some countries branching into coal mines or gas fields in response to soaring global fuel prices, Thailand recognises the potential in solar panels and wind turbines for fostering energy independence. The Thai government’s energy security push last month led to the announcement of a power purchase plan covering roughly five gigawatts of renewables, the largest feed-in tariff programme to date. This investment is expected to essentially double wind and solar capacity by 2030. Furthermore, authorities are planning an additional round for 3.67 gigawatts later this year, Wattanapong revealed. This policy shift reverses Thailand’s previous preference for natural gas as a transition fuel before adopting cleaner sources, as renewable projects in some emerging countries face challenges like grid restraints, bureaucracy, and funding deficits. Photo by gregoniemeyer via Flickr A gas cylinder explosion damaged eight houses and a car in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok while a 15 year old boy living in the incident house suffered serious burn wounds all over his body. The incident occurred yesterday in a three-storey townhouse owned by a 39 year old man named Weeraphat Chuensomsong. He was not home during the explosion. Unfortunately, his 15 year old son was at home alone at the time and suffered serious burns all over his body, especially to his legs. The three-storey townhouse where the explosion occurred was severely damaged. All glass windows and furniture were smashed and broken. The kitchen, where the gas cylinder was located, was completely destroyed. Of the nine houses attached to Weeraphat’s house, seven were affected. Some roofs caved in and glass windows were shattered. One car was damaged because a house roof fell on it. Weeraphat spoke to Channel 7 about the incident revealing that the explosion occurred at about 5.45pm yesterday when he was not home. He knew about the incident because a neighbour contacted him that his son was injured at the scene. Photo via Facebook/ สมาคมอาสาสมัคร ร่วมกตัญญู จังหวัดปทุมธานี A Thai woman in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok allegedly committed suicide in her car by using a charcoal stove to kill herself with her 11 Poodle dogs. A rescue team, Ruamkatanyu Volunteer Association, was alerted to the death of the Thai woman and her 11 pet dogs and reported the news on its official Facebook page today. According to the report, 12 lifeless bodies were discovered in a black Ford SUV parked in front of a building of the Thai National Housing’s accommodation project in Pathum Thani. According to KhaoSod, the woman was found dead in the driver’s seat and her dead pet dogs were found in the back seat. Rescuers also found a charcoal stove in the car boot, leading them to believe that the woman used it to kill herself and her dogs by carbon monoxide poisoning. As the rescuers could not locate a contract with the woman’s relatives, they took to social media to search for her family or friends. The woman’s brother later contacted the rescue team and provided some information to the media. According to the brother, the dead woman was 48 years old and called Prakaiwan. She worked as a translator, translating documentaries and television series from Japanese to Thai language. She had a lot of Poodles because she bred them for sale. 15. Thai netizens were amused by a viral clip of a foreign woman snapping a pic of her Barbie doll inside a spirit house outside the White Temple in Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand on Monday. Spirit houses – which look like miniature temples – are found in abundance all over the kingdom and are intended to appease ghosts by giving them a place to live so they don’t bother haunting people. You’ll find them outside offices, shopping malls, larger buildings, and private homes – adorned with offerings like Strawberry Fanta, snacks, and marigolds for the spirits. TikTok user @nataleexangel posted a five-second video of a woman of Western appearance placing her Barbie doll inside a spirit house next to the entrance of the famous Wat Rongkhun, or White Temple, with the caption, “Noooo!!” Although spirit houses continue to play an integral role in Thai society, most netizens were luckily entertained rather than offended by the Barbie doll’s photoshoot. Netizens commented… “I’ll wait to hear about this on The Ghost Radio.” “Barbie wants to travel abroad, too.” “The foreigner is probably thinking, why are there so many dollhouses in Thailand?” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/spirit-or-dolls-house-foreign-woman-goes-viral-for-barbie-doll-photoshoot-in-northern-thailand -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 20. Thai youth vote for reform despite political hurdles Three years ago, 24 year old Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul was at the forefront of a democracy movement in Thailand as thousands of young protesters clashed with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets on the streets of Bangkok. 21. Three years ago, 24 year old Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul was at the forefront of a democracy movement in Thailand as thousands of young protesters clashed with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets on the streets of Bangkok. The movement shook the kingdom with its calls for reform and unprecedented demands to curb the power of King Maha Vajiralongkorn but gradually dissipated as the coronavirus spread and Panusaya and other leaders were arrested. Many of the young democracy protesters are about to vote for the first time in Thailand’s May 14 General Election. They have not given up their calls for change, even if they know they must be patient in a kingdom where conservative elites have long obstructed reform. Panusaya sent shockwaves across Thailand with her speech on monarchy reform in August 2020, which included a 10-point manifesto. “This election will be very important. It can change the game. If the pro-democracy party wins, we have many options to stop the selection of senators, to write a new constitution or to change various laws.” Millennials and Gen Z – voters roughly aged 40 or younger – account for just over 40% of Thailand’s 52 million-strong electorate. Young Thais might be excited about the prospect of voting Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha out of office, Panusaya said, but they are also not naive. Thailand has been hit by a dozen coups since 1932, most recently in 2014, as the military-royalist establishment crushed governments it considered unsuitable or too progressive. Panusaya recalls the “heartbreak” of the 2019 election when General Prayut managed to assemble a vast coalition to keep out Pheu Thai, the main opposition party that won the most seats. Panusaya is unsure that, even against such a backdrop, pro-democracy parties will have the courage to undertake the kind of comprehensive reform the protest movement demanded.
