His victims were his income and the safety of the refugees was not a priority in any way," the court said in a summary of the case. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Board of Investment (BoI) is looking to enlist private firms to promote the Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa program aimed at wealthy pensioners and skilled foreign workers. According to BoI Secretary-General Narit Therdsteerasukdi, these companies will work with government authorities to promote the initiative locally and internationally to attract more prospective participants. He said the move is in a bid to draw more applications for the 10-year visas introduced in 2022. The LTR visa program, which provides tax breaks and other financial incentives, is part of Thailand’s efforts to strengthen its economy. The government aims to attract one million applicants over the next five years. As of September 2022, about 2,800 foreigners have applied for visas. Pensioners accounted for 35% of applicants, followed by experienced professionals wishing to work remotely from Thailand and wealthy global individuals. Collaborating with private firms to promote the program locally and globally is an excellent opportunity for Thailand to increase its foreign investment and attract skilled professionals and high-net-worth individuals. The effectiveness of this campaign could be a promising step towards strengthening Thailand’s economy and portraying the country as an appealing destination for foreign investment. Government Urged to Increase Monitoring of Bird Flu Virus BANGKOK (NNT) - An 11-year-old girl has died of bird flu in eastern Cambodia, prompting a call for increased disease monitoring by government health agencies. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1287520-government-urged-to-increase-monitoring-of-bird-flu-virus/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - An 11-year-old girl has died of bird flu in eastern Cambodia, prompting a call for increased disease monitoring by government health agencies. In response to the incident, Dr. Anan Jongkaewwattana, a virologist at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, urged the government, through a Facebook post, to increase its monitoring of the H5N1 virus, commonly known as bird flu. According to the Cambodian Ministry of Health’s Communicable Disease Control Department, the girl, who lived in a village in Prey Veng province bordering Vietnam, developed feverish symptoms on February 16. A report stated that the patient had a cough and sore throat, and her temperature reached 39 degrees Celsius. She was transferred to the National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh from a provincial hospital, where she was diagnosed with an H5N1 infection. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, and she eventually succumbed to the illness on February 22. To prevent the spread of such viruses, Dr. Anan said it is crucial for the country to increase monitoring efforts and maintain a high level of vigilance. This could include intensifying surveillance at entry points such as airports and border crossings, monitoring livestock and poultry farms, and conducting regular health checks on people who work closely with animals. Additionally, the virologist suggested that educating the public on the risks of bird flu transmission and promoting good hygiene practices could help to reduce the likelihood of these viruses spreading. The Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases has demanded that the Central Investigation Bureau answer four questions pertaining to the incident last December when Rutchada Suriyakul Na Ayutya, former chief of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, was arrested by anti-corruption police at his office. Accompanied by his lawyer, Rutchada appeared before the court this morning (Thursday) to deny charges that he demanded bribes from his subordinates in exchange for their transfers, in a case in which he charges Pol Maj-Gen Jaroonkiat Pankeaw, commander of the corruption prevention and suppression police, and Chaiwat Limlikhitaksorn, director of 9th Regional Protected Area Office and five other officials, with malfeasance in office, depriving him of his freedom, falsifying evidence, intrusion and criminal association. During the hearing today, Rutchada claimed that his arrest at his office last December was an act of collusion between the anti-corruption police and Chaiwat, as Chaiwat was under investigation for alleged misuse of 14-million baht for a reforestation project back in 2019, which is due to expire on March 29th. The Pattaya Thai-Bangladeshi Community marked International Mother Language Day this past Tuesday, February 21st, 2023, in Pattaya. The event took place at 7:30 P.M. at the Unique Regency Hotel located on Pratumnak Soi 5 in Pattaya and was attended by dozens of local residents, prestigious guests, and members of the Pattaya Thai-Bangladeshi Community. You can learn more about International Mother Language Day here. The observance is held worldwide and is formally recognized by the United Nations as a day to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world, according to UNESCO. It is especially important to the Bangladeshi people as the day was their initiative. The people of Bangladesh fought for the recognition of the Bangla language in the late forties and early fifties in East Bengal (now Bangladesh), culminating in an incident in 1952 in which the then Pakistani government, which wanted to make Urdu the only national language, opened fire on protests and rallies protesting the decision to not make Bengali a state language, killing five people and injuring hundreds. In 1956, the Bengali language was finally made a state language of Pakistan after years of protests, rallies, and activism.
