PHOTO: บริษัท โสภณ เคเบิ้ล ที.วี.และสื่อสาร พัทยา จำกัด Pattaya City Council voted to tear down an expensive, unused lobby at the Pattaya port after it was reportedly used only once over the past five years. The building that was supposed to be used as a luxury, air-conditioned lobby for passengers traveling to the Pattaya port in South Pattaya was constructed during the administration of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) in October 2016, according to local media. Despite a large sum of money spent on the lobby, it had only been used one time to host an event since its construction was completed in 2017. Local media said thousands of travelers visited the port every day, but the lobby always remained closed. Finance Ministry Says Economy May Miss 2023 Forecast BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Finance has indicated that the Thai economy may not reach a forecast growth of 3.8% next year due to a global economic slowdown, but said this year’s outlook should still be achieved. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Finance has indicated that the Thai economy may not reach a forecast growth of 3.8% next year due to a global economic slowdown, but said this year’s outlook should still be achieved. According to Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, slowing exports will not affect the ministry’s growth outlook of 3.4% for this year as the crucial tourism sector picks up pace. Exports, a key driver of Thai growth, unexpectedly dropped in October for the first time in 20 months and the Ministry of Commerce predicted a further slowdown amid softer global demand. Export shipments, however, were still up 9.1% in the first 10 months of 2022 from a year earlier, assisted by a weak baht. The finance ministry expects exports to rise 8.1% this year and increase 2.5% next year. It also sees 10.3 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2022 and 21.5 million in 2023. Arkhom noted that Thailand’s fiscal position remains strong enough to withstand future risks. On Tuesday (29 Nov), the Cabinet approved a budget of about 37 billion baht (US$1.04 billion) to expand Don Mueang International Airport to accommodate 40 million passengers per year from 30 million currently. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand Travelution 2022, the first digital technology show for the Thai tourism sector, has commenced at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. The event is aimed at reinforcing the government’s policy of leveraging digital technology in all aspects of national development. Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said Thai industries are making progress with the use of digital technology. This is enabling processes in production and services to be adjusted. For the tourism sector, the application of digital technology would help attract tourists, generate income for the tourism industry and improve Thailand’s GDP. Mr. Chaiwut noted that cyber security and personal data protection laws must also be taken into account when applying digital technology. This would be for the purpose of protecting tourists’ personal information. Phuket Tourist Association (PTA) President Bhummikitti Ruktaengam said Thailand Travelution would promote tourism businesses’ access to digital technology. It would also encourage the use of tourism-related big data in product and service development. He said this would benefit the tourism industry as a whole, and enable startups to have opportunities to go global. There are 3 main activities within Thailand Travelution 2022. The “Tech Talk” sub-activity will see experts and tourism industry professionals, as well as representatives from ‘Unicorn’ tech start-ups, discuss matters pertaining to airlines, hotels, insurance, and payments. 450,000 baht in prize money is up for grabs. The “Travel Tech Exhibition” showcases tourism innovations from about 30 entrepreneurs. The innovations are applicable to tourism technology, hardware, the metaverse, AI, and Big Data. The exhibition also provides business matching opportunities for innovators and tourism businesses. Furthermore, a “Hackathon” activity provides a competitive space that would yield the best ideas for developing tourism innovations using data from the ‘Tourism Data Intelligence Sandbox’. These data-driven innovations will usher in new services and increase Thailand’s ability to compete at the international level. Thailand Travelution 2022 is ongoing at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center until tomorrow (30 November).
