A person uses an e-cigarette product. Illustration photo by Pixabay The health ministry has proposed a ban on new-generation tobacco products, citing the negative impacts they can have on the youth as also the additional management costs they can impose. At a conference held Wednesday on solutions to prevent the negative impacts of tobacco, Tran Thi Trang, deputy head of the legislation department under the Ministry of Health, said the current Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention does not have provisions to deal with e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Allowing the distribution of these products on a trial basis has revealed the potential negative impacts including management costs, which means the state having to expend human and management resources to resolve social issues stemming from the use and abuse of the new tobacco products, especially their impacts on the youth's behaviors and lifestyles, she said. File photo shows police investigating the death of a victim of the Duterte government's so-called war on drugs. AFP / Noel Celis, file MANILA, Philippines — Ahead of the launch of its flagship information campaign against illegal drugs, the Department of the Interior and Local Government urged local government units to formulate their anti-drug plan of action that responds to the needs of their localities. “Our anti-illegal drugs campaign takes a whole-of-government approach which would only be efficient if we are able to execute plans such as local anti-drug plan of action (LADPA) and barangay anti-drug plan of action (BADPA) down at the grassroots. It is imperative that our LGUs work with us and draft their respective LADPAs and BADPAs in the barangays,” Abalos said. "Our focus now is unity in the fight against illegal drugs up to the grassroots, just like our Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan Program." This handout photo taken on March 2, 2022 and released by Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on March 27, shows a Chinese coast guard ship (L) shadowing a Philippine coast guard vessel (R) while conducting a maritime patrol in Scarborough Shoal in South China sea. The Philippine coastguard accused its Chinese counterpart on March 27 of illegally steering one of its ships close to a Filipino patrol vessel on March 2 in disputed South China Sea waters, risking a collision. Handout / Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) / AFP MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is “seeking clarification” from China on the reported “forceful” seizure of rocket debris by the Chinese Coast Guard from the Philippine Navy, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said Thursday. In an interview on CNN Philippines’ “The Source”, Manalo said Manila has sent Beijing a note verbale on the incident first reported by Navy Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos. The latter accused China’s coast guard of blocking a Filipino rubber boat towing an “unidentified floating object” in the disputed Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea. “We have, of course, our own reports but we would like to hear it from the side of China. And at the same time, we will continue monitoring these incidents and will see what further diplomatic action might be needed,” Manalo said. This undated photo shows 'balikbayan' boxes that Filipino migrant workers traditionally send home for Christmas. Photo supplied MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs has committed to delivering the abandoned balikbayan boxes to their families by mid-December after a number of shipping companies failed to send them to the intended recipients, a House lawmaker representing overseas Filipino workers said Thursday. In a statement, Rep. Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino (OFW Party List) said this commitment came after she met with Bureau of Customs Director Michael Fermin for updates on balikbayan boxes abandoned by consolidators and de-consolidators, and the legal actions taken by the bureau on these fraudulent forwarders and consolidators. "In our meeting today with BOC, we are happy to get BOC’s commitment to deliver all these balikbayan boxes to the homes of our OFWs by mid-December. Albeit delayed, we are glad that our OFW families will finally enjoy the gifts of their loved ones abroad," Magsino said in her statement.
