Image: Google BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s environment minister is currently in Egypt to represent the kingdom at the United Nations’ COP27 conference. His delegation is there to report on the nation’s progress in tackling climate change and implementing carbon reduction plans. Delegates also expressed Thailand’s intention to contribute to global efforts to mitigate global warming. The 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) is being held in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El Sheikh. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Warawut Silpa-archa is representing Thailand in discussions with multiple countries on how to respond to climate change. He is also discussing measures and innovations that would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are a main contributor to global warming. An important development has been progress made in the Thai-Swiss enactment of the worlds’ first carbon credit transfer agreement, which paves the way for future carbon credit exchange models. Thailand has also opened a carbon credit trade platform with the aim of developing it as a center for the voluntary exchange of carbon credits. The initiative is being discussed among ASEAN member nations in the hope of expanding its scope to cover the entire region. Over the past year, Thailand has been successful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing climate change response plans. The kingdom is currently working towards realizing carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero emissions by 2065. The delegation also presented Thailand’s progress in tackling global warming to the COP27 conference, as reflected in both short-term and long-term plans implemented by the kingdom. BANGKOK (NNT) - Health authorities have been reporting an increase in new COVID-19 cases, in what they describe as an expected small wave. Thailand’s top virologist said the latest wave is expected to last until February 2023. The number of new COVID cases in Thailand has been seeing a steady climb, although the disease is no longer categorized by health authorities as a dangerous communicable disease. According to official reports, COVID hospitalizations during the week of November 6th-12th numbered 3,166, or 452 daily cases on average. This was higher than the previous week’s 2,759 cases. The number of COVID fatalities for the previous week stood at 42 cases, averaging six per day. Dr Yong Poovorawan, Head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said in a Facebook post that the rise in cases is to be expected as COVID becomes endemic and seasonal. The severity of the disease is considerably lower due to Thailand having mostly achieved herd immunity as a result of vaccinations and natural infections. According to Dr Yong, treatment options have also significantly improved, with effective drugs such as Molnupiravir, Paxlovid and Remdesivir now widely available. On the subject of vaccination, Dr Yong recommends that all Thais receive at least three COVID vaccine doses, regardless of brand. Those who received their last jab over six months ago should meanwhile get an additional booster dose, as the immunity wanes with time. BANGKOK (NNT) - The best food ingredients Thailand has to offer are making their way to the APEC leaders’ meeting in Bangkok this week. Chef Chumpol Jangprai, who is in charge of the gala dinner for APEC leaders, indicated that all ingredients are domestically sourced. The concept for the gala dinner is “Sustainable Thai Gastronomy”. Mr. Chumpol said 5 courses of Thai food will be served at the gala dinner. The first course will be Amuse-Bouche, followed by Appetizers as the second course, after which will come a salad, the main course, and dessert. All menus are halal. The focus of every menu is the 100% use of Thai raw materials. The menus were designed in keeping with the 2022 APEC theme of “Open. Connect. Balance.” The chef explained that 8 flavors of Thai food are being used to “open” the gourmet experience for gala dinner participants. The sourcing of raw materials from production sites all over the country, including GI-enabled products, lends to the “connect” part of the theme. The use of Sufficiency Economy principles and adherence to sustainable development provides for the “balance” part of the theme. The Amuse-Bouche will include crispy golden cups with cream sauce and sturgeon roe. Products from Doi Inthanon royal project will form part of this course. Appetizers will comprise highlight menus from 4 regions of Thailand, served in bite sizes on a map of Thailand backdrop. The course is named “welcome to Thailand”. Khao Soi will represent the North, Tom Yum will represent the Central Region, grilled Khorat Wagyu beef will represent the Northeast and grilled Betong chicken will represent the South. These menus were sampled by press members covering the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting this week. The salad course features a Thai spicy salad that uses 9 organic vegetables from community enterprises in every region of Thailand. The salad also uses organic chicken, rainbow lobsters from Phuket, and pickled duck eggs from Suphanburi. The main course consists of beef masaman curry, mixed Thai vegetables ratatouille, hybrid groupers, Thai Hom Mali rice, and a brown rice mix. The beef is sourced from the famed Phon Yang Kham cooperative in Sakon Nakhon and the hybrid groupers are caught from the sea off Phuket province. The Hom Mali rice is from the Kula Rong Hai area. The dessert course features Thai baked custard with passion fruit sorbet. Side items include Darathong, Thai brandy-infused chocolates from Chiang Mai, steamed flour with coconut filling, lychee macarons, and pandan pudding. Thai fruits are also offered along with tea from the Northern Region and coffee from Nan province. The food menus reflect the government’s intention to make the hosting of APEC 2022 beneficial to all members of the public. All opportunities to present quality items from all regions of Thailand have been leveraged for the purpose of extending economic cooperation. The Thai government agreed today (Tuesday) to set aside 81.2 billion baht to subsidise the rice price guarantee scheme for the 2022-23 rice crops, with an aim to export 7.5 million tonnes of rice next year. Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said that the money will be used for parallel projects, such as 7.4 billion baht to stabilise rice prices, about 7.1 billion baht in credits to slow the sale of about 2.5 million tonnes of paddy by farmers, by keeping it in storage, and 18.7 billion baht to pay the difference between the market and guaranteed prices. The largest tranche, about 55 billion baht, is intended for the project to manage and develop the quality of rice produced by 4.68 million farming households in Thailand. Each household will receive 1,000 baht per 0.16 hectare (one rai) of rice crop, but not more than 3.2 hectares (20 rai) or a limit of 20,000 baht for each household, said Anucha. The Thai cabinet has decided to subsidise the diesel price until January 20th, which means a loss of excise tax revenue for the state of another 20 billion baht. After the cabinet meeting today (Tuesday), Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told the media that the cabinet decided to maintain the diesel price by prolonging the 5-baht/litre excise tax cut on diesel. He admitted that the continuation of subsidies on diesel fuel will mean more spending and a need to borrow more. He said that he understands this will place a greater burden on the next government adding, however, that the subsidies are necessary, as he assured that the government will try its best to manage its debt.
