  5. This handout photo taken on March 2, 2022 and released by Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on March 27, shows a Chinese coast guard ship (L) shadowing a Philippine coast guard vessel (R) while conducting a maritime patrol in Scarborough Shoal in South China sea. The Philippine coastguard accused its Chinese counterpart on March 27 of illegally steering one of its ships close to a Filipino patrol vessel on March 2 in disputed South China Sea waters, risking a collision. Handout / Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) / AFP MANILA, Philippines — China has denied reports of their coast guard “forcefully” retrieving debris from a Chinese rocket found floating off Pagasa Island in Palawan and said are “inconsistent with facts.” Quoting the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the Chinese Embassy in Manila said the object was found floating in the waters at around 8 a.m. on Sunday. This was first retrieved and towed by the Philippine Navy. “After friendly consultation the Philippine side returned the floating object to the Chinese side on the spot. The Chinese side expressed gratitude to the Philippine side,” the Chinese Embassy in Manila said in a statement late Monday evening. 6. File photo of a miner. The STAR/Artemio A. Dumlao MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to strengthen its regulatory powers on small and large-scale mining to ensure the strict implementation of safety and health programs for workers. “We want to legalize small-scale mining firms because many of them are illegal, so the miners have no protection,” Marcos was quoted as saying. The Office of the Press Secretary said Marcos made the instruction in a meeting with DENR officials. “We want to strengthen the regulatory framework so they can operate legally in order to give our miners assistance and protection for safe working conditions,” he added. 7. MANILA, Philippines — A Filipino-Chinese businessman linked by opposition Sen. Risa Hontiveros to illegal gambling and human trafficking denied the allegation. In a statement released by his lawyer Ferdinand Topacio on Tuesday, Lincoln Ong denied any connection with Yatai International Holdings Group, which Hontiveros, in a privileged speech, claimed to have been providing a “safe haven” for illicit gaming and for organizing a “team of Filipino scammers in Myanmar”. Topacio urged Hontiveros to “kindly take a second look at her pronouncements” linking the said company to Yatai International Corp., and in turn linking the same to Ong. 8. Considered as one of the last green frontiers near Metro Manila and a haven for unique biodiversity, the Masungi landscape faces threats of quarrying, deforestation, land grabbing, and other illegal activities. Masungi Georeserve Foundation, Handout MANILA, Philippines — The Masungi Georeserve Foundation said statements from environment officials and members of the Senate that cast doubt on its agreement to restore and protect parts of the Upper Marikina Watershed discredit the hard work of its rangers and put their lives at risk. In a statement Monday, Masungi called the pronouncements made by Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga during the agency’s budget hearing last week, including that the contract with the foundation is disadvantageous to the government, "libelous, irresponsible and baseless." Sen. Cynthia Villar, sponsor of the department's budget, also called the watershed project "wrong and illegal," according to an Inquirer report. "We are deeply disappointed that after investing our own resources and risking our lives to help the government protect and restore the Masungi landscape, it now claims, five years later, that the Masungi Geopark Project (MGP) Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed with DENR Secretary Gina Lopez in 2017 is 'illegal', 'infirm', and 'disadvantageous to government,'" it said. 9. Executive Secretary Victor Rodriguez spoke before the members of the Malacañang Press Corps at the Premier Guest House in Malacañang Palace on Friday (July 22, 2022). STAR / KJ Rosales MANILA, Philippines — Disgruntled over several appointments to government allegedly made through the intervention of former Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez, the fringe party chaired by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expelled the erstwhile top Malacañang official who resigned in September. Rodriguez announced his resignation as executive secretary after being dragged into controversy. He said he would take on the role of the president's chief of staff — a post that did not exist at the time — but said in October that he was out of the Marcos administration. Partido Federal ng Pilipinas kicked out Rodriguez earlier this month as member and executive vice president due to him being an "incompetent and notoriously undesirable public servant," his supposed betrayal of the party and of Marcos’ trust and confidence, "abandonment, disloyalty and many other acts inimical to the party."
