  1. Fifteen labour groups and their alliances rallied today (Tuesday), at the Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon, to demand wage rises and the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. Their leaders then read a prepared statement stating their three demands, which include increasing the minimum wage to 425 baht/per day across the country by October and to 492 baht/day next January, a cut in the prices of all kinds of petrol by six baht/litre and a reduction in the prices of consumer products. (Photo by Jack TAYLOR / AFP) As if political pundits these days didn’t have enough to chew on, Prayut government’s top legal expert Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam on Monday opened what might seem to be a new political Pandora’s Box. And it surely has added to the already heated debate on the political fate of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. According to Wissanu, even in the worst–case scenario in which he is forced out of office as prime minister as the result of a Constitutional Court’s ruling, Prayut Chan-o-cha will still be around in the Cabinet – not as prime minister but as defence minister. A teacher watches her students pray inside their classroom at the start of classes at a school in Quezon City, suburban Manila on August 22, 2022 as millions of children in the Philippines returned to school as the academic year started on August 22, with many taking their seats in classrooms for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. AFP / Ted Aljibe MANILA, Philippines — The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is calling on the government to implement the “RAPID” learning recovery framework as children go back to in-person classes this school year. The framework entails education stakeholders to work together to: Reach every child and retain them in school: Stakeholders are called on to promote the return of in-person learning, provide cash transfers to poor families, and warn “at-risk students” early on in their education. Assess learning levels regularly: This would allow stakeholders to look at learning losses at the national and the sub-national level. However, this would also require tools for classroom level measurement for teachers. Prioritize teaching the fundamentals: There would be an effort to adjust the educational curriculum within subjects with an emphasis on numeracy, literacy, and socio-emotional skills. Increase catch-up learning and progress beyond what was lost: This would entail self-guided learning and targetted instruction, among others. Develop psychosocial health and well-being so every child is ready to learn: This means more investments in both teachers' and students’ needs.
