A motorist has come under heavy criticism on social media today (Monday) after he allegedly rammed his car into a group of students last Friday, as they were walking over a zebra crossing in front of their school in Bangkok’s Phaya Thai district, injuring three of them. The mother of one of those injured said that she took her boy to hospital today because he was complaining of dizziness. She said that the motorist did not stop at the crossing, even though a school official raised a red flag to indicate that the students could cross, adding however that, after the accident, the motorist did not even stop to help get the injured students to the nearest hospital, but drove straight to the Phaya Thai police station instead. According to Pol Col Adul Ngoh, of Janae district police, a group of insurgents approached the checkpoint, in front of a paramilitary outpost, from roadside bushes and, when they were about 20 metres from the steel barricade, one of them opened fire with an M16 assault rifle, killing one of the rangers manning the checkpoint. The insurgents later lobbed an improvised explosive device at the checkpoint and continued to fire their automatic rifles, before retreating back into the bushes. Pattaya Deputy Mayor Manoch Nongyai and a representative from Aktavee Company, the contractor of the construction site, visited the couple namely Mr. Arthit Saengarun and Ms. Orachon Huay Yai who both sustained many injuries after their motorbike plunged into a 3-meter deep construction hole in the street on Soi Buakhao 15. The deputy visited the couple today at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and gave them a bouquet of fruits to express his apology. Piao Yeang Tai rescue workers were called to assist a man who was electrocuted and passed out at 6 p.m. yesterday, August 18th, in the Bueng subdistrict of Sri Racha, Chonburi. The rescue workers met with the victim who appeared to be a Burmese man at a gas station. He was lying motionlessly on a truck bed of his friends and suffered two dark burn wounds to his left hand and left foot. The rescue workers then checked his pulse and pronounced him dead at the gas station amid his mournful friends. Police General Damrongsak Kittipraphat, the deputy national police chief, stated during a road traffic conference on Friday, August 19th, that the Royal Thai Police is in discussion with the Department of Land Transport to enact a sub-law for pickup truck users and passengers under the same Road Traffic Act (No. 13) which order all passengers in vehicles to wear seat belts throughout the journey, to be effective on September 5th. The draft will prohibit more than three passengers from sitting in the back seats of pickup trucks for safety as most of them did not provide proper seat belts. Additionally, the number of passengers sitting in the pickup’s cargo bed will be limited to a maximum of six people, and sitting at the cargo rear will be strongly prohibited.
