BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Labour has launched a campaign to promote the sufficiency economy philosophy among the Thai workforce. This campaign received praise from the acting Prime Minister, in a presentation at the government house today. The Ministry of Labour today at the government house presented the outcomes from its campaign that promotes the implementation of the sufficiency economy philosophy among both employers and employees and encourages workplaces to utilize their existing resources for workers’ benefits, such as using an unused piece of land to grow vegetables. This will allow the workers to reduce the cost of living, a key starting point for a sufficient economy. The campaign presentation at the government house today was observed by acting Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan. Successful outcomes from Saraburi Sugar Company Limited and Thai Stanley Electric Public Company Limited were highlighted in this presentation. The acting PM praised these workplaces for their visions of good life and happiness, and for allowing workers to have security, immunity, and self-sufficiency. Minister of Labour Suchart Chomklin said the campaign first started in 2021 with 99 participating workplaces, with 303 more workplaces joining this year. The campaign now has 402 participating workplaces, with a target of 300 more in the year 2023. MNRE announces forest carbon credit campaign BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has joined hands with Mae Fah Luang Foundation to launch a forest carbon credit management campaign to achieve sustainable development. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has joined hands with Mae Fah Luang Foundation to launch a forest carbon credit management campaign to achieve sustainable development. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mae Fah Luang Foundation under the Royal Patronage on a new campaign pursuant to Thailand’s net-zero greenhouse gas emission goal by 2065. The two will work together to develop market mechanisms for carbon credit transactions in Thailand, as well as to promote Thailand as a carbon credit transaction hub. Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa said the ministry will be implementing the royal initiatives of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, in terms of forest development and community forests. He said Thailand has been allowing the private sector to participate in the reforestation and greenhouse gas reduction efforts, with 15 active campaigns now cutting 8,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Combined with the efforts of Mae Fah Luang Foundation, the ministry expects to help absorb greenhouse gases in 160,000 hectares (1 million rai) of forest land, benefitting some 1,100 communities nationwide. Mae Fah Luang Foundation CEO Dispanadda Diskul said the foundation has been working with the Royal Forest Department’s Community Forest Management Bureau and 32 local communities in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, and Phayao. These forest management efforts have helped some 18,000 villagers understand how carbon credits work, which in turn encourages them to protect the forests instead of destroying them. Monkeypox cases detected thanks to stringent system: Health Minister BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has so far detected 7 cases of monkeypox. The Minister of Public Health said these reports reflect the effectiveness of a stringent screening system in place. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1270447-monkeypox-cases-detected-thanks-to-stringent-system-health-minister/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has so far detected 7 cases of monkeypox. The Minister of Public Health said these reports reflect the effectiveness of a stringent screening system in place. According to the Department of Disease Control (DDC), the latest monkeypox patient, a 37-year-old Thai woman in Bangkok, has no history of traveling to countries with an active outbreak or being in contact with rodents. She has however had intimate contact with a foreign man prior to her illness. The department has identified 3 close contacts with this patient, who are her senior relatives to whom she paid a visit. They are now asked to closely monitor their symptoms until 11 September, which would mark the end of the incubation period. DDC Director General Opas Karnkawinpong said monkeypox is not easily transmitted or leads to severe illnesses. He recommends that everyone wear a face mask when they are close to other people, frequently wash their hands using soap and water or use hand sanitizer, and refrain from getting intimate with a stranger. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said the DDC is following its protocol to conduct disease investigations with high-risk contacts, including the foreign man who has had sex with the latest patient. He said reports of monkeypox cases reflect the effectiveness of the disease screening measures, as well as the alertness of the general public to get screened, once they exhibit suspicious symptoms. The Minister of Public Health reassured the general public that monkeypox is not a scary disease, as transmissions are unlikely among those without risk behaviors. The disease is also curable with treatments. On the easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions, especially since the lifting of the quarantine requirement for unvaccinated travelers to Singapore, Mr. Anutin said Thailand still needs travelers to show their vaccination certificate. However, the measure can be relaxed further if the situation continues to improve. Government committee on informal workers meet, aims to provide better protection to workers BANGKOK (NNT) - A meeting of the government committee on informal labor has taken place with an aim of better protecting informal workers. BANGKOK (NNT) - A meeting of the government committee on informal labor has taken place with an aim of better protecting informal workers. The remote meeting via the Zoom platform was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon. New models of employment such as online platforms have outpaced existing labor laws in Thailand. This means some informal workers do not receive the appropriate extent of protection or benefits that would otherwise be entitled to them. The meeting endorsed a draft of the operation plan on the management of informal labor for the years 2023-2027. The plan consists of 6 main guidelines to enable skill development, career promotion, protection, and workplace benefits for informal workers. The plan also calls for a database for informal workers to be developed and a support network for informal workers to be strengthened. Gen. Prawit has ordered relevant agencies to implement said operations plan and report progress to the Ministry of Labor every month. The Ministry of Labor has also been assigned to quickly push for the enforcement of the draft law on the development and protection of informal workers. The bill is aimed at enabling a better quality of life and protection of informal workers. The ministry was also asked to make the necessary preparations to support the enforcement of the bill. These include reorganizing the structure of various agencies, developing an information system to facilitate convenience for people, and fostering public awareness. Said efforts would encourage people to register as informal workers. The government would then have a database it can use when considering relevant policies and when administering aid to informal workers. Monkeypox likely to follow in HIV footsteps BANGKOK (NNT) - A doctor from Chulalongkorn Hospital has warned that monkeypox could potentially spread in the same manner as HIV, with nightlife venues being at high risk of becoming transmission hotspots. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1270443-monkeypox-likely-to-follow-in-hiv-footsteps/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - A doctor from Chulalongkorn Hospital has warned that monkeypox could potentially spread in the same manner as HIV, with nightlife venues being at high risk of becoming transmission hotspots. In his Facebook post, Dr. Thira Woratanarat, a medical doctor who specializes in epidemiology and health promotion at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said monkeypox shares overlapping features with other infectious diseases such as COVID-19, as the virus spreads through environmental contamination and surfaces. Dr. Thira warned that the monkeypox outbreak has a high chance of being prolonged, despite not being as widespread as COVID-19. Outbreaks within a community are also likely once a case emerges, especially at nightlife venues, tourist attractions, and overnight accommodations without adequate hygiene measures. He said genetic materials of the monkeypox virus can be detected in respiratory droplets, blood, urine, and semen of patients, making it possible for the virus to spread to other humans through fomite transmission, which is when a person contracts the virus from touching a contaminated surface. This mode of transmission is however less frequent than intimate contact such as sexual activities. Comparing monkeypox to HIV, Dr. Thira said superspreader events of monkeypox are likely to occur within at-risk populations and locations. However more widespread transmission remains a possibility with inadequate disease surveillance. Despite the lower chance of transmission through surfaces, Dr. Thira continues to encourage the general public to be cautious and take preventative measures, which include the use of face masks and alcohol sanitizers. Acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan now has full decision-making powers on matters concerning budget and staff, under a ministerial edict approved by the cabinet today (Tuesday), said Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam. Under the edict, Deputy Prime Ministers Jurin Laksanawisit, Anutin Charnvirakul, Don Pramudwinai and Supattanapong Punmeechaow, are authorised to act on behalf of the prime minister, but only Prawit, currently the acting prime minister, has power over budget and staff appointments. Explaining the need to amend an old regulation with a new edict, while Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is currently suspended from active duty, Dr. Wissanu said that it would be very inconvenient for General Prawit to consult Prayut every time there are matters concerning such issues.
