The STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — State auditors flagged the National Youth Commission’s “illegal” use of funds meant for the mandatory and continuing training of Sangguniang Kabataan officers for the government’s controversial anti-communist campaign. SK training fund In its annual audit report on the youth body, the Commission on Audit said the NYC was wrong to use the training funds for the anti-communist campaign as the SK law provides that “in no case shall said amount be used for any other purpose.” The COA specifically called out the the group's spending of P651,999.73 for the payment of salaries of three contractual workers assigned to perform tasks relating to the anti-communist campaign. “As there were no funds issued for implementing [anti-communist] activities, it would appear that the agency is defrauding the government by using funds for a different purpose other than that which intended,” state auditors said. They continued: “Therefore, the above salary payments … are considered irregular/illegal expenditures.” Full Story: https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2022/06/15/2188571/coa-calls-out-youth-commissions-illegal-use-sk-funds-anti-communism-campaign -- © Copyright Philstar 2022-06-15

Government spokesperson Traisulee Traisornkul said on Tuesday, June 14th, that the exemption aimed to facilitate foreign travelers and reduce the congestion at the airports as the number of incoming tourists has increased significantly after the country reopening. Foreigners traveling by land and sea are still required to fill out the forms because the arrivals are not significantly increasing as by air. The immigration forms are still practical in terms of crime prevention and tracking. Without the form, the physical information of incoming tourists entering that country will be collected via biometrics and their tourism information/destinations will be collected from the tour operators and airlines. 13. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has approved in principle a plan to develop people’s financial skills as part of the government’s year for addressing household debt. Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said the 2022-2027 plan consists of eight measures and 19 strategies. The aim was to encourage members of the public to recognize the importance of monetary management and accessing financial information. Under the new plan, Thais of all ages will be expected to know how to properly manage their assets, refrain from creating unnecessary debt, and maximize their savings. Additionally, the plan will educate people on digital assets and how to benefit from them while managing associated risks. In a related development, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow said the government was confident that the depreciation of cryptocurrencies would have no impact on the Thai economy. He specifically cited their low investment volume relative to the stock market. Bitcoin, the biggest cryptocurrency, was valued at about US$21,900 dollars as of Wednesday morning, a far cry from its all-time-high of around $68,000 in November 2021. Minister Supattanapong reiterated that the administration has continuously warned investors about the fluctuations and risks associated with crypto. He also urged people to exercise the utmost caution when making digital asset-related investments. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 15. BANGKOK (NNT) - Officials will be keeping a close eye on commodity prices amid reports that entrepreneurs are raising rates well above the government’s predetermined ceiling. The government made the announcement following Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, noting that some price hikes unfairly burden consumers. The administration has so far declared over 200 products to be controlled goods that cannot legally be sold above their set prices. The complete list of these items can be found on the official website of the Department of Internal Trade at dit.go.th. Vendors are also urged to refrain from raising prices on goods not listed as controlled. The Cabinet also approved a 3.5 billion-baht central budget for emergencies so the Ministry of Higher Education Science Research and Innovation can expedite its “U2T for BCG and Regional Development” plan. The grassroots post-pandemic economic and social development plan will be implemented in more than 7,400 sub-districts throughout Thailand. The plan is expected to create about 68,000 jobs intended primarily for new graduates, while putting no less than 600 million baht into monthly circulation. 18. How to avoid derailing renewed cannabis debate When the “freedom” to own guns was constitutionally embraced in America a long time ago, critics must have given the same warning as their Thai counterparts up in arms against the “legalization” of cannabis at the moment. 19. When the “freedom” to own guns was constitutionally embraced in America a long time ago, critics must have given the same warning as their Thai counterparts up in arms against the “legalization” of cannabis at the moment. Firearms would be misused, it must have been said. The weapons could have fallen into the wrong hands. Tragedies would happen. Powerful businesses joined the fray in America. They did not come out to say directly that gun ownership freedom would give them huge profits, but everybody knew that the industry was formidable politically and its lobbying strength was virtually unmatched. And everyone knows all too well that the industry can easily survive occasional bumps on the road, when random shootings unleashed by “maniacs” occur at schools or fast-food restaurants. Thailand’s cannabis legalization uproar mirrors the US controversy. The leaves could easily be misused. Or they could have gone into the wrong hands. Tragedies could be around the corner. Then there are those standing to benefit handsomely.
