An electron microscopic (EM) image shows mature, oval-shaped monkeypox virus particles as well as crescents and spherical particles of immature virions. Photo by Cynthia S. Goldsmith, Russell Regnery/CDC/Handout via Reuters People entering Vietnam from areas with monkeypox outbreaks will be monitored and suspected carriers quarantined, the health ministry said Monday. Risk factors include making contact with people infected or suspected to be infected with monkeypox, or having had sexual intercourse with multiple partners, within 21 days before the first symptoms appear, according to a temporary guide for monitoring and preventing monkeypox by the Ministry of Health. Based on their risk factors, entrants will be transferred to medical facilities for diagnosis, treatment or self-monitor for 21 days after entry. This policy will also be applied to entrants coming from countries/regions with monkeypox. Teachers watch their students walk along a corridor after a short break at the start of classes at a school in Quezon City, suburban Manila on August 22, 2022 as millions of children in the Philippines returned to school as the academic year started on August 22, with many taking their seats in classrooms for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. AFP / Ted Aljibe MANILA, Philippines — Millions of children in the Philippines returned to school as the academic year started on Monday, with many taking their seats in classrooms for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The Philippines is one of the last countries in the world to resume full-time, in-person lessons -- sparking warnings that the prolonged closure of classrooms had worsened an education crisis in the country. Children in masks and uniforms lined up for a temperature check and squirt of hand sanitiser at Pedro Guevara Elementary School in Manila, which had shut classrooms since March 2020. Parents and students set up camp along the sidewalks near the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) main office in Batasan, Quezon City on midnight of Aug. 20, 2022 as they queue for the start of distribution of the agency’s educational assistance program in preparation for the new school year. The educational assistance program aims to provide financial aid to eligible student beneficiaries which they can use for various school necessities. Some individuals started lining up as early as Friday for the payout which will be given to "students-in-crisis" until September 24. The STAR / Miguel de Guzman MANILA, Philippines — After crowding and long lines during the payout of cash aid last Saturday, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said it will adjust how it will distribute money for indigent students over the next six weekends. Speaking on CNN Philippines' "The Source", Social Welfare Secretary Erwin Tulfo said the DSWD is hoping to tap local government units and considering use of an alphabetical list for the payouts. "We will try to adapt. We will send our own people, social workers to the municipalities and the cities," Tulfo said in mixed Filipino and English as he disclosed that the DSWD would soon sign a memorandum of agreement with the Department of the Interior and Local Government for its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations. A teacher watches her students pray inside their classroom at the start of classes at a school in Quezon City, suburban Manila on August 22, 2022 as millions of children in the Philippines returned to school as the academic year started on August 22, with many taking their seats in classrooms for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. AFP / Ted Aljibe MANILA, Philippines — The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is calling on the government to implement the “RAPID” learning recovery framework as children go back to in-person classes this school year. The framework entails education stakeholders to work together to: Reach every child and retain them in school: Stakeholders are called on to promote the return of in-person learning, provide cash transfers to poor families, and warn “at-risk students” early on in their education. Assess learning levels regularly: This would allow stakeholders to look at learning losses at the national and the sub-national level. However, this would also require tools for classroom level measurement for teachers. Prioritize teaching the fundamentals: There would be an effort to adjust the educational curriculum within subjects with an emphasis on numeracy, literacy, and socio-emotional skills. Increase catch-up learning and progress beyond what was lost: This would entail self-guided learning and targetted instruction, among others. Develop psychosocial health and well-being so every child is ready to learn: This means more investments in both teachers' and students’ needs. A large group of what appears to be Middle Eastern tourists with over 30 motorbikes allegedly blocked parts of Sukumvit Road to illegally race motorbikes. Local media today in the early morning, August 22nd, reported about a group of foreign motorcyclists who gathered in front of the Esso gas station in South Pattaya to drive around the city, unnecessarily honk horns, and disturb peace in the neighborhood. The group of around 30 racers also blocked a portion of Sukhumvit Road in South Pattaya to race their motorcycles without a care for other drivers who may want to share the road, according to local media. This action outraged numerous Thais and foreign tourists who resided close to the street or the rendezvous of these foreign racers, prompting a question of where the law enforcement officials were when they were needed.
