A Myanmar man and his Thai wife, wanted for alleged involvement in the trafficking of Rohingya immigrants into Thailand from Myanmar about seven years ago, have recently been arrested in a southern province by Thai police after they returned from Malaysia. Assistant national police chief, Pol Lt-Gen Surachate Hakparn, told a news conference today (Friday) that the couple had changed their names and nationalities to Malaysian, in an apparent attempt to avoid detection. He thanked the Malaysian police for the intelligence, which helped in their arrest at a border hotel. Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Transport Ministry, Sorapong Paitoonphong, said that they will consider increasing fares for taxis licensed in Bangkok, as taxi drivers have been demanding an increase in the fares in line with the economic situation. He added that fares have not risen since 2014, in direct contrast with increasing fuel prices and costs of living. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Thai Taxi Public Association said that its working committee has proposed an increase, starting at 45 baht for taxis with 1,600-1,800cc engines and 50 baht for taxis with 2,000cc engines and above for the first kilometre. Parts of Phuket international airport was flooded for a while this morning (Friday), following a heavy downpour which led to the inundation of several areas around the airport and the Thalang district. The general manager of the airport, Monchai Tanod, said that only a part of the airside apron, used by private jets, was flooded and that the water drained away about an hour after the rain stopped. He did, however, advise passengers to leave their hotels or homes 3-4 hours before their flight departure time due to heavy flooding in the approaches to the airport. All advertising signs that obstructed the street must be put away or made parallel to the venues within three months, the Pattaya Deputy Mayor told TPN media. Pattaya Deputy Mayor Manoch Nongyai and relevant authorities inspected Walking Street on Wednesday, August 31st, to follow up on the progress of the 30-million-baht road resurfacing project. Walking Street used to be in worse shape, according to Deputy Manoch, because it was dug up to bury underground wires and pipes under the command of the Provincial Electricity Authority to enhance the tourism atmosphere. However, Manoch stated that the project was done during the low season with few tourists, so the consequences were tolerable. Spicy Fish Salad at Khao Kwan. (Photo by Veena Thoopkrajae) A simple yet very effective way of elevating any culinary is to add a splash of color with edible flowers. This is applied to both savory and sweets including drinks. For a long time, Thai dishes are professionally rendered with an aesthetic touch of edible flowers. Currently, a number of fine dining Thai restaurants and leading café have increasingly used edible blooms as seasonal ingredients. They are pleasing to the eye, and are very photogenic for Instagramers. The edible flowers are quite common for home-cooking with the likes of Butterfly Pea (Dok Anchan), Cowslip creeper flower (Dok Kjon), Sesbania flower (Dok Sano) or Humming bird Sesban Agasta flower (Dok Khae) are common among Thai foodies. Those are mainly served just like vegetables on the side of dishes. Yet the use for seasoning and aesthetic purposes – mainly for creation and elevation of the dishes – has just been increasingly popular in the past several years. “Personally, I think I’ve exhaustedly used flowers in my creation as I have been doing so for the past two decades. I started by picking flowers from my friend’s garden to create dishes and from that beginning point, there is no return. Right now, I’d like to find a new twist to my cuisine as this time around I’d like to pursue forest cuisine,” Jarunwan Boonwiwatana, self-taught chef and owner of Homemade Cooking restaurant, told Thai PBS World. Siam Commercial Bank (now named SCB X), Thailand’s oldest commercial bank, created a flutter in the markets in November last year when it announced a multibillion deal to buy a majority stake in Bitkub Online Co, Thailand’s largest digital asset exchange. The 17.8-billion-baht deal made headlines and spurred excitement in the financial and startup communities. SCB X said at the time that the deal was part of its efforts to transform its business and to ride the rapid popularity of digital assets. The deal was expected to hoist Bitkub Capital Group Holdings Co, the parent company of Bitkub Online, to unicorn status — a startup worth over US$1 billion (about 36 billion baht currently) — and make Jirayut Srupsrisopa, the founder and CEO of Bitkub Capital Group, as potentially a new billionaire.
