The competition usually takes place in Hong Kong, but due to China’s and Hong Kong’s stringent COVID-19 regulations that intend to keep the number of COVID-19 patients at zero, the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association thus said they had to hold the 2023 competition in Pattaya instead. The decision was concluded at the association’s online conference on September 17th, with a confirmation that the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships will take place in Pattaya on August, 2023. Thai customs officials have seized more than 43 tonnes of smuggled pork, worth about 8.9 million baht, during the past three months, including about 35 tonnes in September alone, according to Patchara Anuntasilpa, director-general of the Customs Department. He said today (Monday) that the department has stepped up its crackdown on frozen pork and pig carcasses being smuggled into the country through various border crossings to prevent the spread of African swine fever. He cited an incident on September 11th when customs officials stopped a container truck in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province and found 23 tonnes of frozen pork, worth about five million baht, on board, adding that the driver of the truck could not produce any documentation to certify from where the pork came and there was no import permit. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has joined the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 77) in New York City as part of its post-pandemic rebuilding efforts, with the aim of promoting its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to Eksiri Pintaruchi, Director-General of the Department of International Organisation, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudvinai and a team of Thai officials are currently attending the September 17–25 meeting. With the theme of this year’s session being "A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges," Eksiri said Thailand planned to present four objectives for discussion, the first of which was a proposal to host the next summit in person after a two-year absence due to the pandemic. Thailand would prioritize international cooperation, especially in the face of global difficulties such as political conflicts, economic crises and other catastrophes, as well as highlight its position as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) host by presenting the outcomes of different meetings held in Thailand to date. Eksiri noted that the kingdom will also announce its bid for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2025–2027 during the summit. Don and the Thai delegation are scheduled to attend at least ten official meetings and co-chair a number of others to discuss mental health and education, the universal health care scheme, ASEAN, Thailand’s SDGs plan, the promotion of the sufficiency economy philosophy, and the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model. NGOs Launch Thai Language Program for Migrant Workers BANGKOK (NNT) - Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangkok and neighboring provinces are initiating a program to develop Thai language and computer literacy skills among migrant workers. BANGKOK (NNT) - Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangkok and neighboring provinces are initiating a program to develop Thai language and computer literacy skills among migrant workers. Sompong Srakaew, Director of the Labor Rights Promotion Network Foundation (LPN), said the campaign aims to improve the quality of life of workers and ensure they have proper access to welfare and assistance while working in Thailand. According to Sompong, the LPN has established 15 training centers in Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan, Bangkok, Pathum Thani and Phetchaburi, where migrant workers can learn about language, rights and culture through weekly sessions. With the aid of volunteer teams, they will be taught to speak, read and write in Thai, enabling them to converse effectively with native speakers. The LPN and the Learning Institute For Everyone (LIFE) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on migrant worker access to education and training. The Faculty of Arts at Silpakorn University has also joined a proposal to provide Thai language competence examinations and diplomas that can assist migrants in obtaining more advanced employment. Suthasinee Keawleklai, the coordinator of the Migrant Workers’ Rights Network, stated that before the pandemic, the network began using its office as a center for teaching Thai and English. It also taught IT skills, helping Thai-speaking migrant employees to expand their career options by becoming language coordinators and interpreters at hospitals, clinics and private organizations. PHOTO: TMN Cable TV Pattaya A Chonburi official caught her 29-year-old female secretary who had allegedly been stealing her money in her bedroom for the last five years, worth over 10 million baht. She brought CCTV footage of her own secretary, Ms. Sunanta Suebkaew (29), allegedly stealing money from her bedroom to file a report at the Don Hua Lo police station, leading to Sunanta’s arrest. In the CCTV footage, Sunanta was clearly seen rummaging all over her boss’s bedroom and stealing money every day for over 21 times, the Don Hua Lo police revealed. BANGKOK (NNT) - Siam Commercial Bank’s Economic Intelligence Center has readjusted up its projection for Thailand’s GDP growth at 3% this year and 3.7% next year, thanks to the recovery of tourism and private consumption. Mr. Somprawin Manprasert, SCB’s First Executive Vice President, Chief Economist, and Chief Strategy Officer of the Economic Intelligence Center said the adjustment was made to reflect the revenue from the tourism and related sectors, and continuous growth in private consumption. According to the EIC, Thailand is expected to welcome 10.3 million international visitors this year, and 28.3 million international visitors next year. The EIC expects however for the Thai economy to take another 2 years to recover at full speed, and for the country’s Monetary Policy Committee to further raise the policy rate at increments of 0.25%. The Monetary Policy Committee is expected to make these changes in September and November, making the policy rate reached 1.25% towards the end of this year. The committee is expected to readjust the policy rate three times next year until the rate reaches 2%. Thailand’s economy continues to face challenges from the global economic slowdown, particularly in the United States and European Union which suppresses the country’s exports and investments. The zero-Covid policy and property crisis, together with the high inflation rate affecting the purchasing power of households and businesses, have contributed to higher than the expected economic slowdown in China. Uncertainties in Thailand’s politics may affect the confidence in the manufacturing and investment sectors, making it necessary for the government to continue providing help to the vulnerable population. The destiny In 1979, Werner Kossmann set foot in Thailand for the first time. “It was like destiny”, he said with a smile. This country wasn’t, however, in his itinerary at all. Back then, while studying for his bachelor’s degree in agriculture, he joined a volunteer service program and was assigned to work for 2 years at the Nongpho Dairy Cooperative in Ratchaburi. Since then, he has been working on and off in Thailand. At the moment, he is a Project Director of integrated waste and wastewater management for GHG reduction, GIZ Thailand. His organisation cooperates with the Pollution Control Department (PCD) to work on the National Roadmap on food waste, a result of Thailand’s commitment to the UN 2030 agenda to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030.
