Or will more likely receive the same answer I always have in the last 21 years, "without a work permit cannot."

Which is why I want a specific bank and branch where someone has actually been successful in opening an account, not "go visit every bank in Phuket until one of them says OK"

In that case, I doubt that you'll ever find one. If you have been here the time you say you have then I'm sure you know how things change on an hourly basis. Just because somebody opened an account at a branch yesterday, there is zero guarantee the same branch will open an account today. Thailand is doing no more than catching up with the rest of the world when it comes to banking.

I know someone who had an account opened and the next week was told the account was closed because the particular branch in Bangkok should never of opened it in the first place due to him not having a WP.

Does not matter...I have known guys who drained their home accounts of a million baht in 2 months after meeting a girl and their new best friend 'Hiso Life'  There is no test for responsibility.

I don't disagree but how many do we see here that don't even have the money to buy travel insurance and then it's Thailand's fault when there is no money to treat them? The rules are far to lapse. Retirees are needing to prove income and show money in the bank when others are continuing to get extension after extension by paying 1900baht. It needs looking at.

And I have been to each one of those banks, and TMB and they have refused to open an account without a work permit.

Even having an existing account with Kaiskorn they refused to open a new account for me without a work permit.

You like me, are wasting your time. Far too many know nothing experts on here that haven't a clue how it works these days.

Since you are from the UK your passport only needs to be valid for your length of stay for entry to the country. For those from some countries it is 6 months.

Once in the country it does not matter unless you apply for an extension longer than your passport validity.

All neighboring countries require 6 months of passport validity for entry which means you wold have a problem if you need to get a visa or new entry by entering one of them.

According to his post, he will be in Thailand for 10 days with an expired passport. Is that acceptable?

What is this Bank of Bangkok you keep going on about?

I deposit dollars in Bangkok Bank in New York and they keep the dollars there, but credit me with making a foreign exchange deposit and the deposit appears in my local Bangkok Bank account in baht. The Bank of Thailand may receive information about the transaction, but they are not involved in clearing the deposit.

If you still cannot understand how foreign transactions around the world work, I cannot be bothered to explain again.

You should transfer pounds to your Thai bank. Don't ask your UK bank to send baht. You'll get a better exchange rate and the money will be regarded as a foreign exchange deposit. Sending baht is more expensive and is not a foreign exchange deposit.

Of course sending Baht is a foreign deposit! You can send it in bloody rupees. It's makes no odds.  Stop giving misinformation.

If you say so but I do not share your experience.  Perhaps the banks are looking for "quality" customers ?

Quite possibly. There are lots of us very poor people here that struggle by on a day to day basis. Is there any chance you could help me out?

My son, visiting with a visa exempt entry last July,  opened an account with the bank my wife and I use without problem or difficulty.

I'm sure they are still a few occasional exceptions. Fact is, the vast majority are now being asked for a wp and or a long term visa which without, it is very difficult to open an account. That also includes those that already have accounts.

Rubbish-I have had accounts with Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank and SCB in the past and never held a work permit.

I did find it easiest to open a Kasikorn account, that was on a tourist visa IIRC.

Things have changed in the last 12 months regarding foreigners opening bank accounts.

  10. All foreign transfers coming into Thailand clear through Bank of Bangkok no matter which bank you bank with in Thailand.  The longest it takes is 4 days. If you actually bank with Bank of Bangkok the money is in your account the next day or sooner.

All funds sent to Thailand will show as Foreign sourced no matter who you use to send it. Transferwise is a good company to use. You get great rates and you know exactly how much you will receive instantly the moment you send it. Whoever told you that Transfers sent by Transferwise don't show up as foreign sourced income, hasn't got a clue. If you need to prove foreign income, you need to obtain the 'TOR TOR SAM ' or Foreign income exchange forms anyway directly from the Bank of Bangkok at there head office in Silom. Entry's in your Bank book are not recognised. I have no idea why you would need to prove foreign income for a visa or extension anyway? For property purchase yes but for a visa or extension?
