  1. I know that American Express Platinum or Citibank offer earning rates of 1 mile / 20-25 Baht spent, but for those of us on sub-80K salaries, I reckon UOB offers an interesting option via their savings account + Visa Electron card:

-1 mile / 50 Baht spent using the card

-50K initial deposit required for setting up the savings account (but immediately withdrawable if you need it)

-needs a work permit, but nothing else (no salary limits or taxation proofs)

-sends a statement to your house every month detailing all spending and points accrued (just like a regular CC)

Also, they have decent customer service, in my opinion...and being an international bank, it raises fewer eyebrows internationally then trying to pay with a "We Love the King" Bangkok Bank card :o

  2. I've always wanted to fly them, good to hear these positive reports...will be looking at a trip to Mae Hong Son, their planes are an added bonus for aviation enthusiasts, not too often you get to fly on an Embraer in SE Asia :o

  3. Well, got through today (thanks again, Reimar) and got a quotation...5.000 / month for 2Mb with 1 fixed IP, so I reckon I'll get two of those...it's likely the most reasonably priced fixed IP offer around anyway, was looking before at Loxinfo and iNET, forget about it :o

And yes, I know about DynDNS and the like, but I don't want the hassle...there will be a VPN set up and a whole bunch of other things which I don't want to use some guy's website/software for.

  4. I need a couple of static IPs for my office connection (currently a regular TRUE 4Mb ADSL connection), but it being too late to call TRUE (and surely difficult to get a straight answer out of what are surely the most retarded customer service people in Thailand), I thought I'd ask here...any ideas?

VDSL on their website sounds good, but even though the office is in the Asoke area, it's a house, so no doubt it's not within range of such services. Has anyone had experience with this in the past? I am looking pretty much exclusively at TRUE, because they're the only ones with decent ADSL speed, some 1Mb TOT connection would definitely not cut it, static IP or not :o

Thanks in advance for any info!

  5. Well, many of the items I can't find are rather junk foodish, but still, they would be nice to have :o I mentioned above proper pretzels, Cherry Coke, I would also love that American artificial butter popcorn (not the one u need to microwave, the pre-packaged one), etc.

And truth be told, I'm not at all impressed with the selection of stuff in the Paragon and Central World markets, compared to Villa or Foodland they have practically no exotic stuff...

  6. Quality is not really an issue unless you want a brand new film, which would not be available for rent anyway...if it's old enough to be available as an official DVD for rent, you can also get one from the street stalls with the same quality :o

  7. As a long-time fan of all sorts of yummy American foodstuffs, I wonder, how come there is no real specialized deli/grocery store in Bangkok? Or at least none that I know of?

Never been there myself, but I would've thought Jusmag was the place for American goods?

Is that in the American Embassy? I've heard some rumblings about it also, but what are the chances they would allow anyone to walk in and buy stuff? Also, any idea what they might have? I remember thinking at the time that one shelf of food in an office would not have much in the way of variety.

It's not in the embassy, it's somewhere on Sathorn Rd. Unfortunately, it appears to be accessible only to US government personnel.

While I would love to see an "American" store, I would have serious doubts as to its viability.

I've just called them, but not much English was spoken on the phone...or my request was too weird for anyone to comprehend :o

I would very much appreciate some information about this place...a buddy of mine is a former Marine, would that be enough or do they only allow currently employed/enlisted personnel?

  8. Well, I did say deli/grocery...but I agree, most good delis are ethnic, though if someone can import the concept of New York pizza, why not other such things? When I was in OZ a couple of years ago, it was so nice to be able to get stuff like Junior Mints, Krispy Kreme, etc.

  10. Italian I don't know the name of, but it's next to the Rioja restaurant in Chitlom, whose map I have attached.

    Australian --> http://www.foodglorious-food.com/

French, it's not exactly specialized, but Carrefour has a very wide range of French products, such as imported yoghurt, cheese, foie gras (at least the Rama 4 one)...even Villa doesn't have such a good selection and at least from my point of view (as well as several French friends), there's no particular French item which we would want and not be able to find there.

I have been to specialized Italian, German, British, Australian and French delis, but have yet to see a proper place selling American foodstuffs. It's true that you can get many items in places like Villa or Foodland, but there are quite a few things which I love and can't find, such as: Planter's pretzels (and they did have them here years ago) or Cherry Coke (Villa used to have Dr. Pepper, but never Cherry Coke).

With so many Americans in this country, it seems shocking that no one has opened a specialized deli...Bei Otto is an excellent example of what a proper place can import, you can find some of the German specialties they sell there in other supermarkets, but they also have numerous things which have obviously been imported in tiny quantities and are sold only there.

If there is one already, I wanna know!! If not, perhaps it can be a business idea for all those guys looking to invest their money in the Banking subforum? :o

  12. CDMA has twice the range of GSM

I was taught that it is exactly the opposite, that you need more transmitters to blanket an area with CDMA coverage than you do with GSM :o

In any case, it doesn't make any sense to do this right after all those investments and I can't see how much of the infrastructure they could actually re-use...
