How Joe Biden and Donald Trump's border policies compare
9 Just after taking office, US President Joe Biden vowed to put an end to what he termed the "moral and ethical" shame of Donald Trump's immigration policies. The Trump administration had adopted a strict border policy and the Biden White House promised a more "humane" approach. But the Democratic president has faced criticism from immigration advocates who say his policies are unduly harsh. Here's how the two US presidents compare. Sending migrants back What Trump did: In March 2020, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Trump administration invoked Title 42, a controversial statute ostensibly meant as a public health measure. The policy allowed US authorities to swiftly expel migrants - including asylum seekers - at the border. Nearly 400,000 people were detained and expelled between its implementation and January 2021, when Mr Trump left the White House.

World's temperature likely to break key 1.5C warming threshold for first time between 2023 and 2027, scientists predict
Our overheating world is likely to break a key temperature limit for the first time over the next few years, scientists predict. Researchers say there's now a 66% chance we will pass the 1.5C global warming threshold between now and 2027. The chances are rising due to emissions from human activities plus the El Niño weather event expected this summer. If the world passes the limit, scientists stress the breach, while worrying, will likely be temporary. Hitting the threshold would mean the world is 1.5C warmer than it was during the second half of the 19th Century, before fossil fuel emissions from industrialisation really began to ramp up. The 1.5C figure has become a symbol of global climate change negotiations. Countries agreed to "pursue efforts" to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C under the 2015 Paris agreement. Going over 1.5C every year for a decade or two would see far greater impacts of warming, such as longer heatwaves, more intense storms and wildfires.

Durham report finds FBI probe into Trump-Russia ties was flawed
A long-awaited report has strongly criticised the FBI's handling of its investigation into alleged ties between Russia and the 2016 Trump campaign. In a 306-page report, special counsel John Durham said the agency's inquiry had lacked "analytical rigor". He concluded the FBI had not possessed "actual evidence" of collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and Russia before launching an inquiry. The FBI said it had addressed the issues highlighted in the report. In the report, Mr Durham - who was appointed by then-Attorney General William Barr in 2019 - accused the FBI of acting on "raw, unanalysed and uncorroborated intelligence". Among the investigative mistakes it made were repeated instances of "confirmation bias", in which it ignored information that undercut the initial premise of the investigation.

Eating bacon is wreaking havoc in your gut, doctor warns
Bacon, cheese and fried foods are just some that might be damaging your health Read more: Doctors horrified after patient's scan reveals tapeworm infestation Processed meat These are meats preserved in processes involving smoking, curing, salting, and adding preservatives. And while they're high on taste, they're low on health benefits. Common processed meats include sausages, bacon, ham, and deli meats. Meat processing can help improve its texture and shelf-life but when eaten in excess they can also harm your health. Early animal studies have suggested salt may destroy certain strains of lactobacillus bacteria in the gut, although more research is needed. But more worrying is the addition of nitrates and nitrites, which are used to preserve their colour and flavour.

MSG is the most misunderstood ingredient of the century. That’s finally changing.
Calvin Eng, the owner of New York-based Cantonese-American restaurant Bonnie’s, isn’t shy about his love for monosodium glutamate. Case in point – he has the letters “MSG” tattooed on his arm, and his restaurant’s menu includes a signature drink called the MSG Martini. “Things just taste better with MSG, whether it’s Western food or Cantonese food,” the chef tells CNN. “We use it in drinks. We use it in desserts. We use it in savory food. It’s in almost everything. Salt, sugar and MSG – I always joke that they’re the Chinese Trinity of seasonings.”

- Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban casts doubt on Ukraine's long-held Nato membership plan
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has cast doubt on Ukraine's long-held aspiration to join Nato. His intervention came after the bloc's boss, Jens Stoltenberg, said on Friday that "all Nato allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a Nato member". Mr Stoltenberg has consistently said Kyiv will join Nato in the medium term, once the Russian invasion is over. But Mr Orban was quick to express his surprise at the latest claim in a one-word tweet on Friday afternoon. "What?!" the Hungarian prime minister exclaimed, reacting to an article on Mr Stoltenberg's comments. Nato is a military alliance of 31 countries, mainly in Europe, but also including the US and Canada. Hungary, like all members, can veto new members joining. Nato members - including Hungary - agreed in 2008 that Ukraine would eventually join the alliance, while denying it immediate membership.- Military exercises suggest China is getting ‘ready to launch a war against Taiwan,’ island’s foreign minister tells CNN
One day after China simulated “joint precision strikes” on Taiwan during military exercises around the island, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu condemned Beijing’s actions in an exclusive interview with CNN and warned that “they seem to be trying to get ready to launch a war against Taiwan.” “Look at the military exercises, and also their rhetoric, they seem to be trying to get ready to launch a war against Taiwan,” Wu said.- Interest rates likely to fall to pre-Covid levels, IMF predicts
Interest rates in major economies are expected to fall to pre-pandemic levels because of low productivity and ageing populations, according to a forecast. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said increases in borrowing costs are likely to be "temporary" once high inflation is brought under control. The Bank of England has been raising interest rates since December 2021, taking them from 0.1% to 4.25%. This has raised mortgage payments for many homeowners. Central banks in the UK, the US, Europe and other nations have been lifting interest rates to combat the rate of price rises, otherwise known as inflation.- British man arrested for 'human trafficking' raid at bar in Thai resort as dozens of women are loaded into police truck
A British national and a Thai woman have been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking in Thailand's seedy 'Sin City' resort of Pattaya. Cops raided the 'Flirt' bar on the area's notorious Soi 6 road - packed with dozens of sex bars - next to the beach at around 9pm on April 5. Footage from the raid shows dozens of young women being frogmarched into a police truck and taken to the local station to be questioned. Englishman William Reece and local woman Jaranya Deeppair, 31, were detained by police chiefs. The Brit was seen being led into the police station in what appeared to be handcuffs. Officers said that arrest warrants had been issued against the British man on April 4 for allegedly conspiring to commit human trafficking.- Apple announces its next major event where it's expected to launch a HUGE new product

- Nato boss Jens Stoltenberg says Ukraine to join military alliance in 'long-term'
Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg says Ukraine will become a member of the alliance in the "long-term", but for now it needs to remain independent in the face of Russia's invasion. Ukraine has sought to join the US-led military alliance for years. After Russia's invasion of the country, President Volodymyr Zelensky asked for that request to be fast-tracked. Ukraine also applied for EU membership days after Russia invaded, and gained candidate status in June. "Nato allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a member of our alliance, but at the same time that is a long-term perspective," Mr Stoltenberg told reporters during a visit to Finland's capital, Helsinki. "What is at issue now is that Ukraine can prevail as a sovereign independent nation." Ukraine, for years, has sought to join the military alliance between the US, Canada and 28 European countries, something President Vladimir Putin has described as a security threat for Russia. - Republicans announce investigation into Joe Biden !
One day after retaking a majority in the US House of Representatives, Republicans have said they will investigate the president's family as a "top priority". The lawmakers said the inquiry would focus on overseas business dealings of the president's son, Hunter Biden. The 52-year-old is already under federal investigation, but has so far not faced any charges. The younger Biden is not involved with the administration in any capacity. But top Republicans insist their inquiry will determine the extent of Joe Biden's alleged involvement in his son's business dealings, including during the elder Biden's time as vice-president.
