  1. The International school I worked for employed foreign staff on one year fixed term contracts. A few years ago they inserted a clause stating that staff had to inform them if they received Thai citizenship or residency. I'd kept them informed since I first applied. When I became Thai they couldn't employ me on fixed term contracts (private schol act forbids this for Thai citizens). They tried to give me another fixed term contract which I pointed out broke the law. They then gave me a non fixed term contract but removed my bonus and flights as they said Thai staff didn't receive them. I asked the ministry of education to investigate and informed the school they were breaking employment law as you can't reduce an employee's benefits without their consent. Their justification was flawed as they tried to argue that Thai and international staff had set benefits. I proved this was incorrect as staff had negotiated different benefits. In the end I took them to the labour court for breach of contract as they didn't pay my flight and breaking employment law as they didn't pay me severance for my 10 years of employment. In court the judge sided with me and they had to pay plus interest. We signed an agreement which stated they wouldn't prevent me from getting a new job. They then gave me a terrible reference which implied it might be unsafe to hire me. I took them to court again and the judge stated the headmaster was a slanderer and awarded damages. I don't regret becoming a Thai citizen one bit. I only regret giving 10 years of effort to an unethical organisation.

Slow clap - well done ! Great story

  2. If you have two jobs, say with the combined salary of 81K/mo, would you meet the 80K/mo requirement for PR? Or would the two jobs instead come under the 100K/year taxed requirement (meaning you would instead need a monthly salary of around 85-90K to meet 100K/year, after deductions, etc.)?

Do you have 2 work permits ?

  5. Businessman my wife taught towards his citizenship process a few years ago was asked for 500k baht for his passport, when he declined they came back a few months later and said he could still get it but the price was now 700k. He did not bother, I wondered if it was common practice.

Con job or he did not qualify and that was his “qualification”.

I paid the govt 5000 baht fee, translation fees for docs ( about 5 to 10k I think ) and ie 100 baht for something

  6. When I first came to Thailand I did a few years work as a teacher at a big school. There was about 40 foreign teachers of whom 4 were from Africa. One day, I mentioned to one of the African teachers that I'd seen this advert on TV that was racist. He laughed and told me it was him who starred in it. He knew it was bad but thought of the money. He got twenty thousand baht for doing the commercial. True story.

Darkie is always a Chinese brand。

The name in chinese is "黑人" means "Black People"

The company(Hawley&Hazel)was founded in 1933,in Shanghai.

And maybe because of the WW2 or the Civil War of China. They move to Hongkong and Taiwan.

    you can see pictures

After Colgate purchased 50 percent of the firm in 1985, religious groups, African-Americans, and company shareholders protested the racially offensive nature of the brand. After more than three years of criticism, Colgate switched the name from Darkie to Darlie and modified the logo to a less crude version of a black man.

Great write up - I was in Malaysia in the early to mid 90’s and Darkie brand was still prevalent

So it was maybe 95 not 85

  8. Do we really know what would and would not work in "the west"?
There are countless example of people with ideas and nobody wanted to invest in this because everybody knew it could not possibly be a success. And then it becomes a success and some people make millions or billions.

One example I remember is the Million Dollar Homepage. What a crazy idea - and it worked...
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Million_Dollar_Homepage

    Also remember Red Bull...

Cheers - post was not really about biz ideas rather about stupid names people pick for brands/ products

    ie Fanny Ice Cream

  9. While VN and China might be one party communist governments (politically) they are not communist economically.

Capitalism works much better under a one party state to that is friendly to the capitalist's needs than it does a democratic based government that represents the interests of the people. VN and China would be considered 'state capitalism'. Ho is rolling over in his grave these days.

P.S. That is one ugly color scheme.

Edit: This is my 666th post. Must be the mark of the devil.

    LoL re uncle Ho

The owner must of been annoyed, everyone thought it was a S500 - “ I gotta do something drastic to differentiate “

A bit weird, cause I know someone with a Maybach of the highest end, and their car is humongous, not this s500 remodel type Maybach
