  1. My advice to the OP is to look at the substance of the replies made by CM members and then look at the array of stimulating/inspirational topics in the CM forum.

By this measure, you will easily make up your mind!

    * please understand that what moves and shakes in CM usually does not participate in TV CM forum discussions.

  2. From what I am reading, the majority of farangs are coping well in this time of excessive dryness and heat.

I wonder how the nationals are coping?

Food prices climbing, water resources declining and marginalizing farmers, general cost of living going up regardless of one's socio-economic status.

Must be a vicious circle of domino effects on the less than wealthy!

  3. It is not just the beaches here in Thailand that are filthy ,it is everywhere..Thais are some of the cleanest people personally but out side of their own area are some of the dirtiest. The cities do not need new landfills as the average Thai will just take his garbage and junk to the nearest vacant lot to dump it.Even the city electric and water companies do not take their trash back to the city departments ,they too look for a empty lot for their trash. It is truly a filthy land.Even during war time Vietnamese tried to keep their land fairly clean.

    I agree with you whole-heartedly.

In Chiang Mai, I've watched local street vendors and restaurant owners dump cooking oil, grease, blood, and whatever down the local sewer grates 24/7/365!

I've also watched them chose particular times of the day/night to lug trash to somewhere other than their site of business and just dump it unbagged!

Says a lot for the need for education and leadership doesn't it?

Thailand will remain a 3rd world nation until the upper class progress themselves from ignoring their civic duty and self-centredness.

  4. Cheapest beer prices?

any of the shops on NonPrakang Soi 1

    5am openings

    Nice folk.

    better option?

brew your own - eventually you will master the art and never write about this matter on TV again

riskier but truly worth it option?

somehow transport a large amount of "Klang" (silver coloured can - 7%) from Cambodia - awesome brew

  5. Yawn..... if food tastes good I eat it. Thus far I haven't glowed in the dark and none of my limbs have fallen off.

If I should eat something that tastes a bit dodgy then I remember not to buy there again.

Why are kids getting so sick these days? Too wrapped up in cotton wool.....their bodies have never had to fight infections etc.

Possibly too much pc crap going on as well. Let kids be kids then perhaps their immune system might get stronger

Is this the best reply to the OP and question that you could muster?

How did you miss the question asked by the OP?

Or were you just in the mood to "puff one's own feathers" a bit.

Stay on the bloody topic please!

  6. I don't see any actions or programs of deterence by political leaders or police which will prevent the increase in incidents of this nature, especially against foreigners.

This age group of Thais is disenchanted and disenfranchised.

They all too well know that they are also dysfunctional (on an education/skill basis) when it comes to competing for jobs within the ASEAN community.

The best vibes many of them can get are the ones out of a bottle or bag of dope shared with their friends who are in a similar marginalized position.

Some Thais at this age do rise above this but not very many.

  7. Forget for a moment that you are a foreigner.

Just be a fly on the wall.

Consider that these news articles (which we see written in English) are simply verbatim translations of articles originally written for Thais and are available in the local media.

As a fly on the wall do you see rabid discussion amongst Thais regarding these articles, proclamations etc;?

Do you see numerous Thais opinions being expressed in writing as you might see here in TV or certain national english newspapers?

    I don't!

I can't get my best Thai friends to even state an opinion lasting more than 3 seconds..... and some of these people are educated professionals!

  8. Unfortunately, not many thai citizens reply on TV.

With regards to this particular thread and many threads like it, I am left to wonder 2 things:

    1. if TV is not an official venue for foreigners to complain and be heard by the "authorities", then what exactly are posters hoping to achieve by submitting replies?

    2. why would some posters defend Thailand, it's people, it's oddities and what not, when the simplest option for them would be to stay quiet and enjoy what they purport to enjoy?

It seems sometimes re: point 2 that some people are afraid the goose that has laid their golden egg is being jeopardized, that their bastions of personal comfort may become eroded OR heaven forbid, they are armchair ostriches playing "hide my head" in their own sandboxes.

  9. Regardless of what TV patrons think as to who was at fault, what could have been avoided, why things like this happen, what the world should know through expat experiences:

this event happened and has been witnessed by the world.......... and is one more incident of a rapidly growing long list of aggression against foreigners in Thailand.

The world will deal with it as it sees fit and regardless of TV forums.

Unfortunately, those honest and caring Thais who are trying to make a legitimate living in the tourism trade are being severely let down by the inefficient and effective BIB, political leaders and those farangs and Thais who find blaming the victim is the deflection strategy of choice in maintaining their own profit margins!

anyone want to predict that aggressive actions against foreigners will suddenly decrease because of this incident?

    I would predict the opposite.

It will be a mammoth task for the junta to shunt the "national" loss of face that is evolving from this incident!

Unfortunately for the junta, they have no track record of being anything but bullies.

The world will not be bullied nor distracted.

The junta and RTP/BIB are now on the world stage and under the microscope.

  10. My personal preference is something other than the natural sweetness of yams, sweet potatoes, turnip, and squash .... and adding further sweetness to these veggies would turn me completely away from the table.

    My question is:

What types of spices and/or sauces might I find in the savoury category that would compliment the listed root crops and my taste buds.

It's been years since I've eaten any of these veggies.

I've since learned that they are highly nutritious.

I can recall that my favourite home-made baked beans that my mother made were the ones she said were a failure since she'd forgotten to add either molasses or brown sugar to.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  11. You lot think you are being overcharged because you are farang which is complete nonsense. You pay the correct price but Thai people realize many Thais have very little money and because they have such good hearts they give yhem a discount.....That is Thailands story and they are sticking to it...if you dont like it Thai say go home farang you talk no good about Thai we tolopsolopsolai u sure lol

    Such a convoluted argument!

    Typical Thai logic though.

Thais ARE NOT GIVEN a discounted price of admission.

    ... but

Farangs ARE GIVEN a marked-up price of admission.

*** even wealthy Thais pay less than a poorer farang!

    Explain that Tanlic.

  12. The main reason that I will not return to Thailand next season is that personal safety is now almost impossible to predict and is at an all time low since coming here many years ago.

Life is not improving for the average Thai and it only stands to reason that life will not improve for farangs.

Maltreatment and crimes against farangs has been shown to be following an exponential growth curve.

Comments made by farangs in numerous TV forums bear witness and testament to this phenomena.

I wish all TV participants best of luck in escaping unscathed from what is quickly becoming a boiling pot of discontent, jealousy, and acts of violence (which for the most part seldom are found to significantly punish the perpetrators)

    I'll return to Cambodia.

That is such utter, and completely ridiculous hogwash. To say Cambodia is safer for a foreigner than Thailand, is a bit like saying Wyoming is more liberal than Oregon, or Libya has better salmon fishing than Alaska. Thailand remains incredibly safe for foreigners. The number of attacks remains incredibly low. A few incidents do not imply the nation has become dangerous for foreigners. Not even close. Exponential growth of violence against foreigners? Would you care to back that up with statistical analysis, or some sort of evidence?

When you said a boiling pot of discontent, jealousy, jealousy and acts of violence, I thought you were talking about the US, or Europe.

Have you lived in Cambodia Spidermike?

i have. Had a business there.

I really hope that you can negotiate a safe path while wearing your rose coloured glasses in Thailand. I'm happy to hear that you feel so safe and have such a firm grasp of the macro-dynamics of the country.

Please don't whine and complain when it goes left on you and that you have been given a head's up.

ps. for years I've been touting the upsides of living in Thailand to my friends ******* I've recently stopped - thankfully I haven't been living an insular life with expats at the local bars and brand name coffee bars because I think one can become quite delusional when considering that "all is well"

It ain't well and it ain't going to be well for a long time to come.

  14. At least the door to door flower and trinket vendors haven't resorted to beating up farangs who say "no thank you" to their sales pitch. Not like what happens when ladyboys are turned down in other parts of the country!

    Or is that coming?

Doesn't take much to start a hate frenzy.

Thirst, hunger, unemployment, no hope, relegation to the slime and grime of the sidewalks, disenfranchisement by one's own people.

    Not in CM?

    Interesting!

  15. If TAT has it's predictions right (and I'm sure they do), then we should see almost a doubling of Chinese tourists on the streets next season and a doubling of that the following season.

I like this a lot and look forward to witnessing the impact it has on the Thai psyche both on and off the roads.

The next wave of tourists may be the Indians.

That will give one cause to take their deck chair to the curbs for a front row seat in the "Road Warrior Theater".

  16. When I spout the positives of Thailand I never include the tuk-tuk service.

It is a scourge on the countries image.

I say put meters on the tuk-tuks and then watch the number of tuk-tuks decrease.

or - ban all tuk-tuks from picking up foreigners - simple enough - foreigners will get used to it quickly and tuk-tuk numbers will shrink like a post-coital monument.
