  1. Friend of mine flew into Chiang Mai yesterday (Monday) and asked the manager / owner of his condo to complete the TM30 for him to take to Immigration today. They refused to complete the TM30 and said he had to do it and it was"nothing to do with them". What does he do, go to immigration and explain to them? Then what does immigration do if the the Housemaster/Owner won't comply?

  2. I think you are going to be OK on this one.

From the UK NHS - "Zika virus disease is mainly spread by mosquitoes. For most people it is a very mild infection and isn't harmful.

However, it may be more serious for pregnant women, as there's evidence it causes birth defects – in particular, abnormally small heads (microcephaly)".

The possible unpleasant side-effects mainly affect pregnant women (I'm assuming you don't fit into this category?). But I think it's a good idea to try and avoid or quickly treat all mosquito bites and the risk of malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever.

  3. Bubbagreenbird: Yes, your money is likely gone. It's probably in your best interest for you to remember this experience the next time you are tempted to part with cash before you have the goods. Nevertheless, most Thais are honest and it's a shame you've been treated this way.

NB: I'm guessing you never thought you'd end up being the villain of the piece, did you? They're a quirky, self-opinionated, irascible bunch here on TV, never lost for a damning indictment (except where food or alcohol are concerned).

  4. I've had this message "Service unavailable", a number of times (maybe 10 so far in a couple of days), when navigating from the main page and when trying to open (for instance) a specific page where a thread has multiple pages.

I can only resolve the problem by leaving the TV website and going back in again (and then it doesn't always work), it's very annoying. It's only happened since the upgrade NEVER before.

What's it all about, is there a "proper" solution, is anyone in admin reading these messages?

  5. Joe -- you may be new to Thailand. Trakool is a banner ad at the top of the Thai website. Scroll down to see photos. You best source of background to explain the "furniture shop" connection is the CityLife article referenced in post No. 13. The red bike was probably used in the delivery of the letters in question. The color of the bike is very telling.

Edit: I've decided to stop wearing red nail varnish least it be misinterpreted. Fortunately, never did like red or yellow clothing, so I haven't had to clean out my closet.

Thank you. As you suggested I did go to the Trakool website as you suggested and scrolled down to a plethora of pictures showing amongst other things (unhappy looking people, clothing, a car, a red m/cycle and a blue m/cycle). I found the CityLife article equally confusing, but I guess the more recent posts (above) go some way to providing background detail.

    I'm grateful for your help.

    Joe

  6. I'd be grateful if someone / anyone could explain in plain English what's being said here.

What do "furniture shops, delivery drivers, red bikes" have to do with a rumour that the Mayor of Chiang Mai has been "deposed" and why does the URL lead me to something called "Trakool"?

    Thanks,

    Joe

The related searches of the well known furniture shop (and owner of several hotels) has been well covered in Thai media. Apparently owner is MIA overseas (per some reports). Owner who is named is also described as a friend of a unamed but famous politician whistling.gif

Good news is they caught the delivery driverscheesy.gif

Poor sod...look at the Red bike (what a coincidence colour wise). Can't see him having shekels for any fine himself.

  7. Pulling this thread back from circa 30 years ago in Hong Kong tothe present day in Chiang Mai - rolleyes.gif

Why not ask the owner(s) at one of the "Irish" pubs (O'Malleys or the UN Irish bar)? I'm pretty sure they don't have any traditional Irish music but you never know, it might be something to think about starting.

    Good luck,

    Joe

  8. I'm not sure that this isn't Chiang Mai / Thailand Immigration gone mad.

From my cursory look at this form I don't see any of the "official" government logos or a designated form number (unlike those on the TM7 or TM 47) and resultantly don't know if the requirement to complete this document is compulsory or optional (especially if it hasn't been ratified by the required government legislation). Additionally, I can't see that anyone could be fined for not completing a form that hasn't been ratified by the required legislation.

Is there someone within the TV community (NancyL perhaps?) who might be able to speak to someone at Chiang Mai Immigration to provide some clarity on this issue?

  9. You can buy them at some branches of Asia Books but definitely at Robinsons, not inside the bookstore but near the (I think) 3rd floor entrance on the right as you walk in.

  10. I wasn't questioning whether you were qualified to sign as a witness Jip, just whether the witness needed to have a stamp.

Ok so you two (Jip and Transam) are confirming that you have both signed off as witnesses on someone else's DWP Life Certificate without appending a stamp and in both cases you are confident that DWP has accepted it.

Hope I got the facts straight now?

Yup - I maybe being bureaucratic but it's being received by bureaucrats and I still don't quite trust that they all their receiving staff will consistently for all time ignore an apparent stated requirement; given that a rejection might lead me or someone I sign for to suffer loss of pension for a time while a revised form is sent in. So I think I'll phone them and find out, telling them I have been asked to witness for someone and I'm sufficiently qualified but don't have an official stamp.

Would be grateful if you let us know the result of your 'phone call...

Also does anyone have a link to a downloadable version of the "Life Certificate"?

    Thanks,

    Joe

  11. There seems to be a misunderstanding among many TV posters.

The "Life Certificate" does NOT have to be witnessed by a Thai person and as Jip99 said, the list of "suitable" people goes far beyond that on the DPW information form CF(N)698 because the DPW website was updated as follows:

Since 7 November, 2013, the Life Certificate signing service passed from the British Embassies to a full and varied list of professionals. This is the same as the list of people who can ‘countersign’ a UK passport application, with the important difference that the person who countersigns a Life Certificate does not need to live in the UK, or have a British or Irish passport. Countersignatories must work in (or be retired from) a recognised profession or be ‘a person of good standing in their community’. The full list is on the DWP website - here is the link: https://www.gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications/accepted-occupations-for-countersignatories

    Joe
