  1. "All flights will use the airport from 28th September"

Anyone know if there will be a direct bus/train to and from Korat?

If not will there be a regular link to and from Mo Chit Bus Station?

Apart from pronouncing the name its also going to be a real pain if no direct bus/train link is offered, as it will add, at least, an hour to the journeys.

  2. Have a non immigrant 1 year visa, a rental residence in Korat and a Thai driving licence.

I want to bring my car from the UK to Thailand along with other personal effects in a 40ft container.

Other personal effects and the car are second hand and the personal effects include furniture/ books etc..

The car is valued at £12000 in the UK down from £15000 new but to sell it in the UK (as is) would possibly get 8K?

It may be better to bring it here? I have heard that if I don't keep it here forever I can avoid import tax.

Has anyone done or has info on doing it?

EastWest Co. do shipping too and I discovered them in Pattaya. Has anyone experience of using them?

    What a strange question?

Particularly as you are very "curious"

Have you thought of getting off your proverbial and looking for yourself.

There are Londoners who have never been north of Watford and the poorer for it.

You ask the question of Issan residents but presumably the same applies to other areas of LOS.

Issan is a living, thriving and different part of Thailand that has a unique history.

For 198 bht you get the bus to Korat from Mo Chit Bus Station and then start to explore.

I've never heard of a BKK farang being eaten or skinned alive here but Martin there are some wild, funny ha.ha. and funny queer people here.

So when you come, do keep your wits about you.

  4. Hi Everyone

Im moving to Thailand in July to be with my girlfriend who is my soon to be wife. We are also expecting our first child in October. Basically rather than her come to England to live with me she has convinced me to come and live with her in Nakhon Ratchasima. She was supposed to be sorting out the apartment for us to stay in, were not looking for anything to flash just something with enough room for a small family.

Im wondering if anyone knows any websites or could give me any advice on places they are staying at. A small bungalow or flat would be ideal preferable furnished. The most important aspect is that I have to be allowed to have a internet connection as my work and our income depends on it.

She has been looking around a few places today the first was an apartment block which they wanted 10,000 per month for a studio apartment, seems a little to much to me. the second was a small 2 bedroom house for 4000 baht but unfurnished.

Hope some one can help me,

    Many thanks

Checked my TOT phone bill, though I buy telephone time through TT&T as my ADSL comes through them.

Nothing on the bill match "yellow pages" ie no info included.

Have written to your Lord and Master on a related matter. Please confer.

  6. And to get the ball rolling!

The Ranthai Restaurant on Korat's, No2 KhonKaen bypass road, takes some beating for an inexpensive midday or evening meal.

It has a big Pepsi sign and tables are overlooking a ?fish pond and bandstand.

Its near the Chinese Temple "Kuan I'm" and on the same side of the road in the Ban KhokWua area if you look at your Map of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Child friendly, it serves Thai food and the menu is in Thai but has photos to help.

Half the fun is not knowing what you are going to get.

Tom Yum Goong is a good standby.

    Or try

    Baked Mussels (Hoi Ob)

    Seafood Salad (Yum Talay)

Fried Prawn ( Goong Tod )

    Fried Chicken ( Ayam Goreng)

If you like your Curry hot

try Southern Hot Curry (Kang Tai Pla) (Shrimp)

    Bar-B-Q Beef (Nua Yang Namtok)

Vegetable soup on the side? (Jub Chai)

    Bon Appetit.

    PS

No need for the Wet wipes so far Loz!

  7. It was an hour and a half after the kick off time before the Thai TV channel 9 started its coverage of the Australian / Japan game.

Is this a record for a TV sports coverage?

Monarchs may be think they are "absolute" but Christians believe only God is "absolute" and he never interrupted a World Cup game of footie!

  8. Information Directory Notice

Our Electric went off at 4am yesterday morning. I only knew about it because the room and we were getting hotter and it woke me up.( No flaming jokes please)

Whats unusual about that I hear you say?

It wasn't the unusual things, Light bulb, Appliance failure, Trip switches, fuses or a power cut.

No, it was the cable going into the metre. How did I find out?

I rang 1133 directory enquiries( you can do this from anywhere in LOS.)

They gave me the Korat number for the local Emergency Electricity Board Team 044 292 072

They came within 30 minutes and fixed the problem.

Cool eh? and worth making a note of your local team!

  9. Information Directory Notice

I tried the Nationwide last time I was in the UK and it seems they may have changed their tune and charge for transfers.

I have been with Cahoot since Intelligent Finance reduced their rates several moons ago.

They are an online bank. Savings (easy access online) are 4.85% down from 5% and the current account pays 4%,I think.

I have transferred funds to my UOB account. Any amount incurs a £25 charge. They insist on you having a number they can call you on before completing the transaction. Sensible I suppose.

As for Deposit rates here UOB offer 0.75% on "current" accounts, 4% on deposits for 3 months and 5.75% for one year. All interest is taxed at 15%.

The Government Housing Bank offer 4.5% for three months fixed and looks a good deal if you need it.

I think Thai savings rates may go up again. Base rates have.

Loz seems to have found a good deal at Siam Bank, must check out their rates.

Still waiting to hear if anyone uses a Tesco Lotus Card with good effect?

  10. An Information Directory notice.

I bank at UOB Bank and have UOB ATM card which entitles me to draw upto 40,000bht on one occasion per day. It makes no charge at any UOB bank ATM machine, but if I use it at any other of the Thai banks ATM I am charged 20bht. or more for the service.

I have used a UK Mastercard here and was billed in the normal way in the UK. I was charged £2.50 forex charge separate to the transaction and the exchange rate was that days Thai bank rate plus 5%.

I was thinking of using my Tesco Visa Card at Tesco Lotus to see how that worked. Tesco Lotus have a 1% promotion on at the moment. The alternative is to apply for a Thai Tesco Lotus card.

Have you an experience good or bad of using "plastic" in LOS ?

"Say Cheese" the Photographic Shop at 501-503 Pho Klang Road, Korat is best avoided. It is very expensive and unfriendly. My friend also tried to return an unused camera, but even though the local Police officer was very helpful and demanded that the goods be taken back and the money refunded the shop owner refused to oblige. No receipt had been given for the goods overpaid for in cash.

We know a Sale of Goods Act doesn't apply here but this was a slightly different situation.

"Say Cheese" has a big green Fuji Film sign outside.

Pho klang Road is the back Mae Kimheng Market Road and the shop is just past the traffic lights on the left.

The shop reproduces digital photos and sells photographic equipment.

It says "When you take a photo, don't forget to say cheese"

We say this is a bad smell of cheese.

You are doing the the Farang community a big favour by taking your business elsewhere.

An alternative Photo shop is on Jomsurangyart Road next to Klang Plaza.

    Many thanks for your comments

That info should allay my fears too.

Delivery and registration fees etc.. Did they spell those out clearly because they differ at different garages.

I take your point about the price haggling.

    My preference is:-

Toyota Hilux Vigo Double cab 2.5J-PS 4x2 (non metallic white)

Nice finish inside including two water bottle holders.

The back seat folds up so if you don't want to use it you have the convenience of the extra doors and an inside luggage well.

? White, non metallic (I want Neeranam to see me coming past him in his little sports car)

I took the list price added the following and asked for a further discount for cash.

    Delivery registrationetc.. ?about 7600bht

    "Bin Liner"

    Insurance 1 for one year

    4 floor mats

    Window rain shields

Back bumper ( may be standard)

    Fly screen

Central locking (not standard on this model)

    1st service free (standard)

    Full Tank of diesel

(Has turbo diesel engine and intercooler).

List price 571000bht ( about half the price of a car and you get a five seat vehicle and an enormous boot. Ideal for the man who doesn't have an ego problem too.

Discount for cash ( send me an email)

BTW I got my Thai driving licence in one day. I took my rental contract to the Council office in Korat to get it and a piece of paper stamped and then went to Jorhor (? spelling) to get my licence. I did take my UK licence too though.

Once you go for the application form, the nice English speaking girl at the desk is only too willing to help you. (I think she's looking for a farang boyfriend)

  13. I'm just looking for now.

But need to know about vehicle registration.

    Red plates etc.

Can't find the info through a search of Thaivisa?

Can a farang with a Thai one year non immigrant visa/Thai driving licence, own a new car?

Where in Korat does one register it.

Ive been looking at a modest new 4 door pickup.

Settled for a Toyota as they offer the most for the least.

Seen a Nissan, Mitshuibishi, Mazda, Ford and Isuzu

    Haven't found Chevy dealer yet?

Understand the yearly car tax for a two door pickup is 900bht but 6000bht for a 4 door?

Anyone know if cash can produce larger discounts elsewhere in this (Korat)or other areas of LOS?

    Does that affect registering it?

  14. OK, if thats what is wanted?

No formality, minutes, agenda or committee?

Derek has emailed to say that he has asked the Korat Farang website to be our home.

    So thats decided!

If everyone is happy to continue to conduct the Clubs affairs by website and the majority are in favour of the social at Non Thai, why have a meeting?

  15. Dutch

I'll put it on the agenda if confirmed.

    TheKoratpost will be represented too.

I have stated my preferred opinion.

I'm trying to be diplomatic but looking forward to the trip to hel_l!.
