  1. I am not going to enter the debate about shorts versus long pants although the latter obviously do provide extra protection against mosquitoes

I would strongly advise using mosquito repellant at nighttime and also in the daytime if visiting rural areas, beaches or even garden restaurants

There is an aerosol in an orange can available from Tesco Lotus supermarkets and other outlets that seems to work very well

You certainly do not want to contract Dengue Fever which seems to be very prevellant these days

  2. I recently sent a small parcel EMS from Fang to Chiang Mai it was posted Saturday am and the recipients called the following day Sunday to say it had been delivered

Compare that with two registered parcels sent to Australia tracked leaving Suvarnabhumi never arrived Australia Post couldn't locate

Two letters taken by hand to Australia one took 8 days to cross Sydney another posted registered mail in Victoria took 7 days to reach Sydney

So please don't criticise  Thai Post

  3. Many thanks for your responses it is much appreciated

they are both eighty and I do not want any potential stress for them on departure so for the small cost involved will apply at Chiang Mai for the extensions

i should have checked the dates more carefully when the bookings were made

    Regards

    Stephen

  4. Hi my retired sister and husband arrived in Thailand from the UK on the 23 December 2016 and were granted a visa on arrival   until the 21 January 2017

Their return flight to the UK is booked for the 23 January 2017 so they are a couple of days short.

As we live north of Chiang Mai can we do a border crossing at Mae Sai to get the extra days or other options

    Thanks in advance

  5. Hi I am seeking some further information regarding my retirement extension which for the past few years I have renewed at Chiang Mai Immigration and met the financial requirement by keeping the 800,000 baht in a bank account for three months.

Next year I want to use the option of obtaining a certified pension declaration from the Australian Consul who visit Chiang Mai regularly.

My pension is non government and in excess of the above annual amount which for convenience I elect to be paid  six monthly in advance to my Thai bank account via my Australian bank account.

By me receiving it with the above frequency will this create a problem or can I just state on the declaration the annual amount.

    Thanks in advance.

    Stephen

  6. If your wife is returning to Thailand it would probably be easier to obtain the passport here I am Aus/Brit and my wife Thai/Aus we recently obtained a Thai passport for our baby who was born here in Thailand.

We obtained the passport in Chiang Mai and they were the most efficient and helpful Thai government department I have dealt with in the five years I have lived here.

I am sure that you will need the English birth certificate translated into Thai but there is a company that advertises on this site that obtained our daughter's UK passport and had the Thai birth certificate translated into English

Cannot see why they couldn't do the translation

Also I think the child will need to be registered at the District Office

  7. The Australian Consulate in Bangkok have published that they will be visiting Chiang Mai on Friday 9 December 2016 for provision of the normal services.

    Between 9. 00- 12.00pm

                     1.00pm to 3.00pm

  8. Hi I am seeking clarification regarding some issues relating to an Australian "Private"  Pension and the requirements for the Retirement Extension

Unlike in many countries the Australian Government  Retirement Pension is means tested and despite the fact you may have contributed through paying big taxes over the years as I have unless you meet the requirements of the assets test, the bar for which is continually being lowered you are denied the pension which is my situation.

I do have my own private  pension accumulated through an Industry Superannuation ( Pension ) Fund which for convenience I choose to have paid bi annually into a Thai Bank Account the total annual  amount exceeds the annual amount required for the Retirement Extension

    My questions are

1 Does my current situation meet the requirements and  financial test for the Retirement Extension?

2 As the pension is not paid by the Australian Government but my private superannuation ( pension)  Fund is a letter from this Fund and the Thai bank confirming such payments sufficient to satisfy the Immigration Department?

( If the requirement is for the pension to be paid monthly that can be achieved without a problem)

Any advice and experience in this area would be appreciated

  9. Hi I am 66 years old and have lived in Thailand for five years utilizing a retirement extension and also holding a multiple re entry permit

I am married to a Thai National (we married in Australia) who also holds Australian citizenship and we have a baby

I also have my own house book and Thai ID card issue by the local District Office my nearest Immigration Office is Chiang Mai

if I wish to change to a marriage visa is it necessary to leave the country and can this happen before the retirement extension expires
