I live in Kata and it is as dead as the dodo. Half expecting to see tumbleweed bowling down the street.
Only one beach bar open(as far as I know) at the north end of the beach. Many, many shops/bars/hotels closed and up for sale/rent. Mega hotel building still going on though.

Errrr, ummm, autumn/winter is the flu season in the uk. Hence the fact that the annual vaccination programme begins in October. So i don't think it is a case of 'may' increase cases - it will.
In my opinion Sweden had it right all along and has developed to a certain extent 'herd immunity' - this is what should have happened in the UK. i have said(to anyone who would listen and there were many) that the 'lockdown' was a BIG mistake.

I too was hoping to go to the UK this year - first time in two years. Can't go now and don't know when I will be able to go.
Having said that at least it is warm here, can see my friends and plenty of food available. Also toilet rolls -55555555.
Better here than in the UK - just wish I could get off the island.

Further to all the replies on my rent being dropped by 50% I would like to point ut the following.
she is stunned that the house is clean and well cared for. It was in a disgusting state when I moved in.
I pay/do all the maintainance in the house a/c's water pumps etc.
She has five houses she rents out and a Farang husband who works all over the world.
I am a landlady in England and I too offered my tenants a rent reduction, please note that I have to pay for all the maintainance and annual contracts in the UK.
It works both ways.

Well, I am very lucky - my landlady has given me a 50% discount for two months - I never asked for it she offered it. Was stunned - most unexpected.

Well - the 'containment' measures don't seem to be working(not that I ever thought they would).
My personal view is that it is out in virtually all communities in the world and will wreak havoc on the very poor, malnourished and overcowded shanty towns.
Until a vaccine becomes available I don't think anything will improve - people will continue to die of this disease. I feel it would be far better to resume our lives as before - yes more deaths may well occur but herd immunity will rapidly develop. I have great empathy for those who have lost loved ones and for the deaths of future victims.
BTW I am 65 so if I get it there is a strong possibility I would be severely affected.
China will never, ever accept responsibility for this fiasco they have wrought upon the world and it is up to all other governments to apply sanctions.

The Americans are getting their $1200 gifts from Uncle Sam, the Thais are getting their 5,000 Baht/month from Uncle Prayut, now how about Uncle Rishi sends £1000 out to all us poor Brits who are saving the NHS by selflessly staying in Thailand.
If only - ain't going to happen despite all the taxes we have to pay.

OK, to reply to the original question I actually do. However I am in Phuket. My friend was taken seriously ill yesterday - primary cause was not covid-19, however he did have a cough and a headache. He went by ambulance(kudos to whoever thought up the hazmat gear). Tested for covid-19 and sent to an icu at another hospital. He has no insurance but has a stash of dosh. He could have gone to one of the three main private hospitals here. He ended up in the government hospital(which he has to pay for) and we are awaiting the covid-19 test results which should be available this afternoon/evening.
Other than that the only two people I know of(but not personally know) is Prince charles and Boris Johnson!!

You can get very cheap Insurance to cover Covid in Thailand. 850 baht covers 100,000 in medical bills and 1,000,000 in the event of death to a beneficiary.
Please enlighten me where I can get insurance for 850baht to cover covid? I am 65 and have prediabetes so I can only get accident insurance and nothing else.
In response to the OP I would say stay here. It is still possible to meet up with friends, food is easily available and although I am very cavalier about my health and don't worry I would be extremely concerned about being on a plane with 350+ other people.

I think that might be a typical 'regional' thing. Different area - different rules.
I live on Koh Samui and donate blood regularly. No one here has mentioned the Mad Cow bit.
Mind you, I am a universal donor so maybe they turn a blind eye to that rule. They phone me when they need blood urgently for foreigners.
I have been told that they may not take my blood when (if?) I reach 70 years old. (Next year.)
Thanks for that I am going to Koh Samui next week so will have a look to see if there is anywhere holding donation session.
-
I would be very happy to donate my blood. I am a fit and health (I think) 65 year old. However because i have lived in the UK between 1986-1992(I think) my donation is refused because I MAY have mad 'mad cow disease'. However I can give blood in other countries but not here - crazy system as I am sure there are many others like me here.

My extension is due in November also. Like the OP I used the Embassy letter(I am a Brit).
Due to unforseen problems with my ex-partner my transfers haven't always been up to 65,000 monthly level. sometimes more sometimes less. Overall I will achieve the 800,000 by the end of October.
Sorry about pre-amble but I went to see an agent this week and because of the leniency advice for this year only I will not have a problem.
But that's here in Phuket and I have read about different offices having a different approach.
Good luck

I asked this question at Phuket airport last year when I flew in from Dubai - they told me no, not required. No problems with my 90 report later.
BUUUUUUUT that was then.

I understood, for the UK, that a Foreign Office audit had recommended additional cost cuts, which included to discontinue issue of income letters for Brits in Thailand.
IMO, the current British government is a waste of space.
How true!!!

OK I have read all of this post and whilst in some respects I agree with you in others I do not. You say you are a retired law enforcement officer so you must surely have had to use computers? Whilst the immigration data on the website is not always accurate you could have avoided all of these problems(and money) by doing it yourself. Yes the annual paperwork is a nightmare but if you had prepared well in advance you should not have had any of the difficulties you describe.
Maybe I am lucky in that here in Phuket we have volunteers in immigration who will point you in exactly the right direction to take with your paperwork - no referral to agents.
Good luck with your travels(if you bother to read this)

One thing I discovered back in 2014 was that there was a discrepancy between what appeared on the website re O-A and the guidance sheet handed out at the Embassy. I went to the Embassy to ask which one prevailed. The answer was the guidance sheet handed out at the Embassy. I found that the website specified notarisation, whereas the guidance sheet allowed certification. That saved a lot of money. I also made a second additional visit to ask whether the request for the British Police Force docs were necessary as specified on the website or if the online Scottish Police printouts were acceptable. The Scottish ones OK. It seemed odd going to the Embassy just to ask questions on separate occasions, but it turned out to be worth it.
Guess you were lucky with the Scotland police clearance I had this and checked with the Thai Embassy if that would be ok and was told categorically NO = it must be Scotland Yard. This was in 2014. But then again it might just have been I got a stroppy IO officer.

I use the swan coils - I put it in a metal bowl to catch the ash. Not worried about the toxicity of them after 45+ years of fags don't think it will make any difference.
When I go out at night I spray on Avon skin so soft dry oil spray. Used this in many countries in the world and it seems to work better on me than anything else.

Thanks for the post Sheryl and all the informative replies.
I have a living will made out in 2011 in the UK and witnessed by nurse practitioner.
I resign it every couple years - will this still be valid here?
I have only one brother in the uk who would not agree with the terms I have set out - he believes life should always be prolonged as long as possible.
I do have friends here in Thailand would it be ok for one of them to sign and carry out my wishes - I am thinking of a Thai girl I know very well. But looking at some of the posts would I have to make a new one each time I moved within Thailand.
Many thanks everyone.

How do the agencies do it? They cannot "lend" you 800,000 for 3 months--can they??
I actually do know someone who does this via an agency. Bankbook and card + pin number handed over. Also passport. Takes two months and costs 30,000 baht - nice bit of interest on 800,000 for two months.!!!

My marriage extension is due in April, so I will be looking to get my BE income letter soon, the worry I have is that my passport expires in November 2019 so will be looking to renew the passport before I go to immigration in April. Will there be any problems with the passport number not tallying with the passport number on the income letter?
I went last month to Phuket immigration for my retirement extension. I had a letter from BE re income declaration. The letter stated that I was a 'He' not a 'she'. Also my address had changed but it did not seem to be a problem.

And of course the "Daily Mail" who are banned in Thailand due to their negative articles on Thailand.
Off thread a bit however, it is possible to buy the Daily Mail as a newspaper in Thailand.
