I go back to the point of NHS Healthcare, a previous poster said you are entitled to free treatment if over 65 years old, I can't find any info stating this.

My understanding is if you are out of the UK.for more than half the year you are classed as 'non resident'  therefore no free NHS Treatment. The Tax rules are different, my local hospital always asks you if you have been Resident in the UK for the last 6 months irrespective of how old you are.

This is correct.  If you are out of the UK for over six months then you are not entitled to NHS healthcare.

This would exclude those going on a 'gap-year'

However should you be visiting the UK and have an emergency they will treat you free of charge.

As i said I do keep a UK address and see my GP/Nurse every two years when I return.

It is ludicrous that I STILL have to pay tax in the Uk but I am not allowed to access healthcare when i have worked for 44 years in the Uk and required very little in respect of healthcare.

  2. Sorry if this has been covered but I am afraid I haven't read all the posts.

I moved here from the Uk over two years ago.  I am now 62.

I rent my house out via a letting agent.  They should tell you about the tax situation.  You can receive your rent with no tax taken out so long as you fill in a form and send to HMRC.

Do not sell your house.  I have known so many people who have sold their house in the UK to move abroad, something happens and they want to come back to the UK.  Then they find they cannot sell their house (whereever it may Be) or cannot get back on the housing ladder. especially if they come from the South of England.

Don't buy anything over here unless you are determined to lose your dosh.

Keep a mailing address in the UK for all correspondance from HMRC, hospitals, gp surgery.

If you return to the UK for whatever reason, make an appointment well in advance with you GP/Nurse to get your BP checked/urine checked for diabetes.  This ensures you remain on their books and they won't 'delete' you from their list.

With regards to your state pension, don't forget you have to apply for it 3 months in advance.

Also with regards to your lady all i can say is good luck.

Good luck with obtaining your visa - I wish I had known about Ubonjoe and this site before I came here - life would have been much easier.

  3. Has the OP thought of contacting Soi Dogs?  I know they went to one of the islands a few months ago to do a neutering campaign on all the dogs and cats.  They do this in my area _ Kata.

A quick check to see if a dog/bitch has been neutered is to look in their ears - Soi Dogs put a dot tattoo in them to show they have been neutered.

With regards to Enoon making generalisations about childless people - just think - they too may have been neutered so as not to expand the proliferation of the human race.

I have never heard of a CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK FOR RETIREMENT  being required for this, and I have had married to a Thai, and retirement. I know that some schools require the background check. New one on me

Over two years ago we applied for a non-O visa in the UK, a criminal record check was required done by Scotland Yard.  Dont know if it is still the same in the UK.

Never need one here or in Malaysia.

Not always possible; particularly as the lower paid tend to work long hours already. 5% of UK workers earn just the minimum wage of £7.20 p.h. and they would need to work approx. 50 hours a week to earn £18,600 p.a.

So what is wrong with working 50 hours a week?

I have done that and i am sure many others have also.

I have also worked much longer hours per than that

  6. I have read all the posts and I think I maybe missing something - or not?

So to take a spouse to the UK, you need to show £18600 gross per annum.

However as an ex-pat here in Thailand I need to prove an income of £19200 per annum to stay here for one year.  This is working on an exchange rate of £1 = 42 baht.

Huh - what is the problem?  I f you have a full time job whereby you do not earn that amount then get a second job - many people of my age did just this to pay for ourselves and families.

  7. I only put mossie spray on when I go out in the evening - I should remember to put it on before I go to market - but usually forget.

Use coild on the verandah in the evening - keeps the little blighters away.

Mossie repellant? I use Avon skin so soft dry oil spray.  250ml lasts for months.  Friend of mine used it in Guatemala and it was the best she used.  Now take it everywhere with me cos mossies think i am delicious.

Wear shorts all the time during the day,  Loose and floppy dress if not going out.

    Enjoy your self over here.

Thanks to people like him I suffer from COPD. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by second-hand smoke

Sorry to disillusion you but there was alot of research undertaken many years ago by Southampton University by a professor who wanted to prove the connection between second hand smoke and lung disease.  He could NOT prove the connection.  Unfortunately as it did not suit the health authorities it was supressed.  This research was NOT funded by the tobacco companies I hasten to add.

Many years later some research undertaken by the Welcome Institute found a genetic link for chronic lung disease, which means that even if you have never smoked or been exposed to second hand smoke you are likely to develop problems.  My 46 year old friend has this despite never smoking and only rarely being exposed to smoke.

My Auntie who died at 94, lived through the London smogs and had only a small living room that was always wreathed in cigarette smoke, - never had any breathing problems.

the same research also found that some people have a gene that protects them from developing smoking related lung cancer in spite of the fact that they may smoke heavily and over a long period of time.

There are many forms of lung cancer, only one of which is associated with tobacco consumption and that is adenocarcinoma.

I will keep on smoking as i enjoy it, Thailand is a free and easy place where i can have a cigarette and a drink in the warm and at the same time.  Unlike in the UK.

  9. I am confused.  Can anyone enlighten me as to why if you are a male farang with a Thai wife you only need

    to prove 400,000 baht income/savings.

However if you are two unmarried farangs living together here you need 800,000baht each as proof of income/savings.

I would have thought that if you were married you would need a greater income than if you were two single people like us.

    Am I missing something here?

No, we do not want to get married - both been there, done that and won't do it again

  10. I moved here two years ago.  I got the mail redirected to a close friend in the Uk who then posted it on to me every three months.  At the time I was told mail redirection could only be for 2 years.

During the redirection time - 1 year, the royal mail missed redirecting tow letters to my friend and instead sent them to my house.  These letters contained cheques for over £3000 but thankfully my tenants reurned them unopened to the original sender.

Mistakes happen i know but it took many phone calls from here to sort it

  11. I too have been affected by the fall in the pound.  I am calculating on a low of 40baht/pound if it drops that low i can still live here.  Returning to the UK is not an option - it is still too expensive compared to Thailand.

Will ride out the storm - I reckon in about a year the situation will start to recover.

My American friend remember the time of $1=£1 and I remember the Euro = £1 so been there before.

  12. I always refuse the plastic bags at the local market and convenience stores take my own re-usuable bag with me - took a bit of time to get the stall holders used to the udea of putting everything in my bag - got there in the end.

Big shop at BigC - use the bags for household and food waste.

Also reuse bags to clean the beach of bags etc left behind/washed up on the shore.

Paper bags would be far better as they are biodegradable but hopeless when the monsoons arrives.

Strangely enough, now when I say 'no plastic bag' the response is good with comments like - good no pollution.

  13. Yes i have made a will told my partner what is in it.

My friend in the UK has a copy.

It saves a lot of problems to have a will when one partner dies - as my husband did.

Then there can be no arguments - especially if there are family members involved - I have only a very well off older brother who needs nothing.

  14. Just to respond to a previous question posed - I am farang female here with my male farang partner.

I have my own income and don't expect him to support me.

I personally having been responsible for my own finances all my life would find it highly demeaning to ask for money.

If I want anything I pay for myself.

Before anyone queries it I pay for the house and everything in the house and he pays ouside of it.

    Works well

  15. Have read the OP and all the replies.

I am from the UK and I find the'touchy-feely', hugs and kisses which is now prevalent in western society intimidating.  Upbringing? probably, but I strongly dislike being hugged and kissed by people who I may have met only once, I feel they are invading my personal space.

I don't mind so much when it's long term close friends but not relative strangers.

Thus i can understand and appreciate the Thai attitude.

  16. Hi,

I have just signed up to the forums on Thai Visa although I have been reading this site for two years.

I am confused though about the funding requirements for a retirement visa here in Thailand.

I have an income way over the required 800,00 baht but my partner has limited amount in his Thai bank account for his next retirement visa extension.

We are both Farangs and not married.  Can he use part of my income as certified by the British Embassy to go towards his next visa extension.

If not why as individuals who are living together have to show a minimum income/saving of 1.6m baht and yet a Farang who is married to a Thai lady only has to show an income of 400,000baht.

Can you see why I am confused?  Or am i missing something?

    Many thanks
