  1. raptillian:

After a loosing roughly 20 kg, I gained some in the attempt to build muscle (but regained fat), now reducing again.
This is called a "dirty bulk." Experience BBers can do this, because they can cut efficiently.
Your post questions is related to your maintenance or caloric deficit caloric intake - even though you mention how much energy you are using.
  2. I don't know if I am right but for blocking the aromatase you need to eat huge amounts. Estrogen has some very important functions...it makes the females live longer because of several positive effects.

If you are older and hormones are not balanced, eating some Zinc won't help.

Check hormone levels in the blood. Post the results, read on the internet. Search for bodybuilding and PCT. There are some interesting informations.

Bodybuilders who abuse hormones end with their body not producing much Testosterone anymore but might be full of Estrogen. They have detailed knowledge of such problems and how to counter them.

And there will be enough scary things to read what may happen if you mess around too much.

A person should take no more than 90mg of zinc a day so it doesn't take a lot. I control my estrogen with only zinc

I am 44. Are my estrogen levels increasing? I assume my testosterone levels are decreasing naturally.

I exercise regularly, lifting weight 4 times per week and do cardio 2 times per week on non-lifting days, and I walk a lot also.

make a blood test, that will give you an overview. With 44 you can have hormones like a Gorilla or you might be half female already....Everyone is different.

My values at 43 are very good. I do a lot heavy lifting and stopped drinking beer. Unfortunately I did not test it before I started the lifting. So I can't tell if it makes a difference.

    I'll get some tests done.

    Thanks for the info.

  3. Zinc blocks amrotease which converts testosterone to estrogen there by raising your testosterone levels. Magnesium is a muscle relaxant and it can help you sleep when most growth hormone is released. Older men need to be very carefull with there estrogen levels. Yes you could take all 3 vitamins and minerals separately typically you need higher levels than what is found in ZMA.

I'd rather ask you, than google.

  6. A good thread that is relevant for many of us. Below, I think this applies to some of us but not all. I think the comments below apply to regular beer drinkers that are over 30.

I have a beer gut now. My grandpa and my uncles had big bellies.

In my mid-40s now, even when I stop drinking beer, the gut does not go away. In fact it has gotten a little bigger in the last 6 months.

As noted in this thread, spot-reduction cannot happen and reducing overall body fat, and cleaning up your diet (macros: Protein/fat/carb) ratio and smart food choices is mandatory.

Secondly, you have to exercise. Period. And you have to work out hard. Regularly.

One this that work well for me is a moderate form of HIIT cardio in the morning on an empty stomach right after I get up. Glycogen store will have your body tap into fat for energy.

Reduce beer intake and try Gin-Tonics or Vodka-Tonic as a replacement for some beer.

Switching will help some (yes there are lots of calories in wine.

No you don't need to exercise.....It works better with exercise and your shape looks better with exercise, but it works exactly the same well without any exercise. Just you must eat even less.

And without exercise I don't see any space for alcohol anymore.

I agree, diet alone - a good clean diet can eliminate a beer gut without exercise. And adding certain types of exercise will speed up the process.

Currently (7 weeks ago, I marked my start-up again on my calendar),

I started and am continuing to do HIIT in the AM on an empty stomach. 21 minutes, and no more.

Later in the day I'll do weight training with a,

    Leg day,

    Back, Bicep day,

    Shoulder day

    Chest Tricep day

HIIT 5 days per weeks and sometimes 6 in the AM with the weight training in the afternoon.

    It's a process. I feel better.

Just be careful, too much HIIT can be bad for you. It puts a real strain on the CNS I was always one of over-training wont ever happen.. but it can.

If we are talking real HIIT here.. i mean going full out in the high intensity part not just going faster but really full out as if your chased and can get killed if they catch you.

    Robblok,

Yeah, real HIIT can tax the CNS and the timing is important.

Truthfully I rarely go 100%. It is because I don't to push my heart beyond what I consider the maximum heart beats per minute range (I go above the 'recomended' heart beats per minute table).

I do go 100% but not often.

I usually do HIIT at what I consider to be 90%, although that is hard to calculate. I do push it. I does wear me out.

Therefore, I am not sure if 90%, or what I think is 90% is real HIIT. I am raising and lowering the heart beat and using a timer.

Again, I do it on an empty stomach first thing in the AM and wait 30 minutes to eat afterwards. I can see the results.

    Cheers.

  8. IF you want to exercise and got access to a real gym do the 5 x5 full body 3 times a week you will drop fat and get muscles. Sometimes more is less. Just google it its basically deadlifts / squats / benchpresses and other full body exercises. But only 3 times a week. That is my advice for weight training.

Diet/ food program will have more impact on loosing the weight as the exercise. Read up on low carb it does work.

5 X 5 is very effective IMO (at least it was for me) and it's only a 3 day a week weight training (intense).

Add the cardio on some non-lifting days and go low (complex) carb and you shoule see results.

  9. I agree with you.

Fructose is processed by the same pathways as alcohol and we know how that gives us a beer belly.

Fruit is best eaten as a whole fruit, include the fibre, it slows down the absorption rate.

One thing I find interesting is that a low carb regime will help you lose loads of weight and you will not be hungry because the fat keeps you full.

If you read a few previous posts you will see a poster on high carb, low fat who has lost loads of weight.

The thing of interest is No Sugar (in any form), nothing processed and whole foods as natural as possible.

I agree with you on sugar. Sugar is a poison. Period. There are substitutes for those who need that "sweety" taste.

So low carb and high carb both work?

Yes, both can work - under certain circumstances AND depending you YOU. Your Basal Metobolic Rate. This is how many calories you burn over a 24 hour period if you do not physical exercise what so ever.

Age, sex, activity level, and of course your total diet.

I like the idea that slow digestion of food will give you the fuel you need as you need it.

A fast fuel supply will switch on your fuel storage system to prevent blood sugar exceeding the limits and damaging you.

For slow absorbtion and energy in a weight training workout that is INTENSE andload the proper amount of complex carbs pre-workout.

I always avoid the refined-simple carbs and insulin spike. My body cannot handle it.

IMO, do weight traning intensively with 1 gram of protein per lb of LBM, reduce carbs and also carb cycle.

Do HIIT cardio in the AM on an empty stomach when your glycogen stores allow fat to be used as energy.

I've got fallen arches.I need to buy a pair of really good insoles that support the arches of your feet. Does anyone know where to buy these in Thailand or online with regestered post. I am out in the sticks but can get to Boots and Central. Thanks

I have fallen arches, flat feet and was in pain. I live in South East Asia.

I went to a podiatrist in the USA on one of my annual visits and he did a mold and the cost was $500 USD.

Before I bought that, I saw a commercial on TV (no joke) for platinum fit soles (or whatever) for $19.99.

I ordered them. I then took these to my podiatrist and he made them reinforced with a form of packed material / cork.

He did this for a small fee.

I have used these $19.99 soles with the cork added by the podiatrist for a small fee for 5 years.

    Give it a try.

(I also ordered a backup pair but have not needed to use them yet.)

    Cheers.

  11. Started reading the food lables, amazing amounts of sugar in things like fruit juice.

Eating 90% cocoa for my chocolate addiction and oatmeal biscuits.

Avoid fruit juice. Except for certain real fruit juices that are freshly squeezed. Otherwise, Bad. Very bad.

As for these cocoa / chocalate oatmeal biscuits, limit them to once per week.

They likey (surely) have HFCs, sugars, and other bad stuff in them.

  12. canman:

Started out at 112Kg 6 months ago, down to 94Kg now. My Lipid panel was a mess all the numbers were way too high. Will be doing another one soon to see if any changes. My diet: Lowish carbs Cut out white stuff such as rice, pasta and potatoes Switched to drinking red wine Cut out all processed foods and eliminated most sugars Lots of fruit and veg and nuts I make a big batch of veg soup (lots of tomatoes, celery, sweet potatoe, carrots and beans, tomatoe paste and chicken stock base) every two

    What is your age?

What is your approximate daily caloric intake?

How much red wine do you drink?

And a big question is....you did not mention working out / exercising.

HIIT cardio will melt you fat quickly if you do it right.

  13. I vary my carb intake.

Yesterday was a higher day (but moderate in general as a whole) - I don't count the carbs, I just know based on what I eat.

Today was basically a no-carb day.

Tomorrow, I'll hit the gym for lifting so I'll have carbs for pre and post-workout in careful amounts and in complex carbs. But it's still on the lower end.,

Musli with oatmeal and protein powder in the morning of the workout day is doing wonders......

Yes, that is a very good workout breakfast. It's also yummy.
